Loving your videos. So refreshing to have a british female gun dog trainer on youtube. I wish all those people with working line but pet cocker spaniels would watch your videos and realise that recall is possible with a cocker in the field :) They just need to put the work in and build their relationship with their dog.

hi, you mentioned a release cue, do you have a video how you train this, my dog loves tug and is a massive motivator so want to develop a solid release cue.

Great videos. Thank you. For the tugging, does it create problems when retrieving a bird? How do you manage that aspect of the training?

Hello Gilles, Thank you so pleased your enjoying them, no tugging doesn’t create hard mouth I put “tug” on cue, plus the pattern of the retrieve is also a different picture to the dog, hard mouth or biting down on birds can be range of other issues to from guarding, stress, fall out when training, arousal there just to name a few. Tug is a fabulous game for some dogs mine love it and he has such a soft mouth !! ☺️

What do you do if there's a distraction that's of a higher value than the reward your offering?. For instance, if your using the highest value treat the dog likes & the dog flushes a pheasant but won't recall for the treat what would you do?.
@georgiesgundogsattrailsfor6874
Hello Gary, Ok so for me if your dog has chased game and doesn’t recall then that’s a reflection in the your training. I would have many layers to build up to point when I take my dog on game. Example if I was hunting the dog let’s say a spaniel it should be close when hunting, two I would be teaching steadiness to the game so that it learns to sit to the flush wether that flight or ground game. Three I would also train a chase recall if the dog did take chase but if I have taught the dog right it should one sit to game a environmental cue for the dog to stop and sit and also if hunting close enough that I would be ready to stop the dog but again I would look at the whole picture. I don’t just use food in my training every dog is different some dogs like toys some like food some like environments then I look how to do they like all of that delivered I also train the dogs to build in not always expecting food later down the line example if I was to go in test or trial I can’t use my rewards but I would build that in my training. Like i said I work with the dog infront of me and also if anything goes wrong I reflect on my training and what happened and go back stages and work on that weak area so I don’t repeat that behaviour. Hope that helps ☺️

Awesome videos! My cocker is 7 months old. I put lots of work in to her, and without distractions she looks so impressive (heal, come, stay etc- to whistle and verbal). However she sees a bird and head goes down and she is off - all goes out of the window. I am not there anymore and it worried me to how far she would actually go! When she goes it is bad and so I still cannot trust her off the lead. Am I expecting too much at this age? I have spoken to someone locally who has labs and hunts. He is going to take me to farm with chickens and pheasant pens so that I can do training around them. He is also going to take me on a fuck shoot in about 3 weeks. Is this a good idea? Can you recommend anything to I can try? I use longline when training outdoors currently.

Firstly I personally would never put my dogs on ducks or near ducks and especially inexperienced dogs and spaniels they are very different to labs. Secondly I wouldn’t even go in a pen with them at that age again too young mentally and until I have solid basics and training in there is no way I would put them under that pressure. When they chase birds dopamine is released it’s takes up to 92 hours to come down off if we keep going out after a chase they will struggles to come off it and will become addicted to the chase,you have to train for the environment not in the environment. She is 7 months old and soon be starting her adolescent phases they push boundaries at this age grow confidence and this is where things can go really wrong. I’m so carful about what my pups are exposed to and what I’m training and where. We rush dogs to quick slow down with her she’s is so young my black one is 14 months old and he hasn’t gone near a pheasant yet as he’s not ready my dogs have to have a whole working life so no need to rush it it’s easier to ruin a dog quicker than it is to train a well trained one. 😊

@@georgiesgundogsattrailsfor6874 oh wow, so glad I commented. I certainly don't want to ruin things when we are doing great apart from that one thing. Thanks for taking your time. You're a little far from me (I'm Sheffield). Do you do offer web dog training sessions by any chance?)
