Gungrave - PS2 Retrospective

With the recent release of Gungrave VR and the upcoming Gungrave GORE I decided to talk about the first two games in this overlooked series. Crazy action, cool bosses and great character designs by artist Yasuhiro Nightow (of Trigun fame) makes this series well worth playing, and well worth examining in more detail.

Fun Fact: Juji shares the same voice as Liquid Snake (Cam Clarke). In fact, this game includes VA's of Metal Gear Solid fame. Cam Clarke (Liquid), Robin Atkin Downes (Miller), Quinton Flynn (Raiden), and James Horan (Skull Face).

I really enjoyed your retrospective man, I've only ever played some of the first game and that was years ago and I didn't remember much about it, this review of yours reminded me of your bullet witch review in how it took me back to those days of watching G4TV and playing my PS2 and starting to getting a feel for my tastes, makes me feel nostalgic, back when we had experimental and over the top games like these more often for Japan. I'll definitely have to have to give both these games a try here soon.

That's cool! Yeah my goal with these sometimes is to evoke that simple era of discovering weird games through TV. I remember finding stuff like Armoured Core that way.

If you didn't play Overdose, you didn't play Gungrave. That was the best in the series. Can't wait for G.O.R.E. I've got that same art book too. It's excellent.

OD wasn't as much memorable as the first game, plus the first game had 60 fps, making it look like eye candy.

There's a trick to the slomo in the final boss fight: using your own bullet time special will cancel it out and return the game to normal speed.

@@harlannguyen4048 It seemed obvious to me at the time, the game gave you infinite special bar (effectively) and frankly my first instinct in any situation of pressure was 'whip out the bullet time'.

I actually enjoyed this series. A bit on the repetitive and short side but it was very stylish and fun to look at as well as entertaining to play.

VR porn will also flood the streets with seed. Hopefully that potential third game sticks with the core game philosophy and executes some of the sequel's ideas better. Also the character Hall of Fame is a great idea. When will Haru be inducted into it?

SHE SHOULD BE. Maybe when I review Persona 5. I'm really hoping GORE turns out to be good but the VR game has not filled with me any confidence. I have it, it's really bad, and I plan to review it pretty soon.

well in OD you can regain shield by using a special and the VR game serves only one purpose: to let everyone know that there's another gungrave game coming soon(sure they might say its for showing you how playing grave in VR feels but its really to call attention to GunGrave GORE). also can we have a Sachiko playing a yuri VR story, I liked how it was going there

The shield regain with a special is something I do mention but I think I cut it out at some point. I do mention that you're pretty much invincible during the final boss though and that's because of the shield regain. It's a nice feature.

@@SnicketySlice not completely invincible but pretty damn close enough to it given that you gain special throughout that fight. and I guess you never unlocked the alternate costumes/skins in OD in the time of this review. otherwise you would have shown off Grave, Juji and RocketBilly in the first game outfit, Bunji and Garino respectively

I played constant Gungrave OD around 2008 to the point that I even made a wikia for it, I loved it as a kid. Going back to it as an adult it's certainly not aged with grace. I'm both eager and anxious about GORE, but I hope it's the crazy third person action shooter it should be.

Took my username from gungrave overdose. Also first learned about gungrave from an ad on the back of the manual for the ps2 version of Shinobi so sometimes ads do work

Trigun and Gungrave do happen in the same universe. Both are seperated by a few decades from each other though.

Retrospectively if you look at gungraves story and watch the anime it’s similar to Afro samurai it’s like they’re both immortal characters on the path of reclamation and revenge it’s very interesting and compelling.

Hey Snickety love your videos and i have a suggestion for one. It´s a game called Samurai Western not many people know about it but i can say i loved it and i think you will like it too. It´s a hack and slash where u are are a samurai killing cowboys what more can someone ask

@@SnicketySlice That is true it is expensive and the only reason i played it is because i pirated it. But i only did this because i really wanted to play it and i only found it like 6 years later and no one in my country(Portugal btw) knew about it, same thing happened to me with Killer 7 one of my all time favorite games and no one here knows about it. It´s a shame

1st Game has the better story, Art Style and Boss Overdose Is better to control, Play and Pacing So it's quite hard for me to pick Also Anime is not bad if your a fan of Gungrave as in some ways it's a prequel but also tells its own story

Because it is. Level Design is trash, gameplay is trash because of a 30 FPS cap with MULTIPLE DROPS DOWN TO SINGLE DIGITS ALL THE TIME, the shield got turbonerfed to the point you have to wait 20 seconds for it to recharge ONLY when you're standing still without enemies around, the Lock On got butchered instead of being improved.
