Zone of the Enders Retrospective (Part 1)

Before we can talk about Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner (the best the series has to offer) we must talk about its 2001 processor, which more people have played but is nowhere near as good. It was because of that Metal Gear Solid 2 demo, wasn’t it? This retrospective series aims to review the two main games. However, I may do a third part that talks about the GBA game, the OVA and the series. We will see!

I really liked the first one. So much that i made the mistake of starting 2nd Runner on the hardest difficulty and regretting it asap

I love that in ZOE2 the game builds up your gear while stressing the "skill of the runner". Then takes away all that gear right at the end when you face AMAD and Anubis... so you are forced to rely on the skills you've picked up through gameplay.

I will admit I bught this game for the game itself , and I love it mostly due to ADA and Viola ... the demo was a bonus for me.

tbf i think my dad bought it for the demo but this game is as old as me and i really loved it. i didnt even know this was an anime until now

*spoiler warning, I guess* I wholly agree that the game is pretty much just a footnote leading up to the Second Runner, but I do not regret playing through it for Viola alone. At the end of the game, when she promised Leo "If you let me live, you're going to regret it!" I just wrote it off as a typical villain threat. An empty promise, like "I'll get you next time!" as the villain shakes their fist and runs off to lose another day. Then TWO MINUTES LATER when I caught up to her to advance the plot she freaking shoots Celvice! It was an amazing turn-around that actually caught me off guard. The way she immediately kept her promise had me laughing in stitches. I just wasn't expecting her to actually go through with the revenge plot, especially not so quickly. It was great.

I had no idea Zone of the Enders came with a MGS2 demo; I bought it because it started with Z and I had to indulge my autistic desire to alphabetize my PS2 collection of games with at least one game starting with every letter. Sometimes I wish I was kidding about this, but in this case, it turned out pretty great because Zone of the Enders, the first one, is easily one of my favourite PS2 titles. I've never even played the second one or even purchased it because the ones available locally to me had "ANUBIS" in really gigantic letters on the spine and it was throwing off my alphabetizing scheme.

Excellent stuff as always. You pretty much described my feelings perfectly for the 1st game, it really does just feel like the first act with a rushed conclusion, but there are some great moments spread throughout it. I'm looking forward to part 2, ZOE: The 2nd Runner is such an amazing game. (Also I saw in the description that you may do a part 3 with the more obscure stuff and that sounds really cool cause I'll admit I know very little about the anime and I never knew there was a GBA game lol).

Me neither until recently! It came before the first and second game. I have never seen the anime series but the OVA is actually really damn good, give it a watch if you can.

The GBA game, which I've beaten *twice* for whatever reason, is just super robot wars. Except with a cool active battle system that you can, if you're good enough, use to say "screw it" to hit chance and avoid chance. It's a cool concept but really standard otherwise

Thanks! It takes a while to do those Persona analysis videos so the next one might not be for a while. I try to maintain my sanity by doing different types of videos. The last thing I'd want is getting sick of talking about Persona.

I'm not familiar with this series. It sounds like you really like the new one though! What Metal Gear demo does it come with? Also, 8:23 was one of the funniest interactions I've heard. Great video!

I think ZOE 1 for what it is, is pretty good. Yeah the 2nd one is way better as a whole, but I don't think it's fair to say it's worth skipping as there's other entries in ZOE such as Idolo and Dolores that are connected to it in some shape or form. Plus there's enough good in it to make it worth it like it's combat, bosses, and I don't feel it outstays it's welcome too much.

The game didn't explain what an ender is or the implied reasoning as to why Leo was so good. Also the anubis "fight" bummed me out. I bought this on xbox one recently and just finished 1.

The issue around the story is ZOE was a multimedia project. There was an anime OVA, an anime series and a GBA game that were all canon to the storyline and expanded on the universe to an extent they were literally essential to understanding the ps2 games.

I think zone of the enders 1 is the better story and the 3rd models work better then the mix of 2d n 3d robots.

I know that he's not a real boss, but it's kinda cool that you can't even hurt him, and the moment is reinforced by creepy as shit music. I guess it also makes the first fight with Anubis in ZoE2 so cool.

I love that you can tell Anubis / Nohman is around by that music. Did you know it's the ending song of the first game in reverse? Blew my mind when I found that out lol

@@SnicketySlice oh fuck yes, it's amazing how creepy it sounds in reverse but so heartwarming in normal. One cool thing that I love about ZoE2 is that you can get a response from Dingo after defeating enemies by clicking L3 or R3. Btw will you be covering the GBA game, OVA and anime?

ZOE is ok. But it wasn't a good game for it's time. It was exactly the same back then as now. All of the problems existed. I think there's plenty to like. Especially now where the game could be packaged with the sequel. But man I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it. it's good qualities are the music, style, and the relationship with Ada. It gets better as it goes and I'd say Ada is a main character. More than the little girl by a lot.

I think we can all agree that the voice acting and script is better in ZOE 1. ZOE 2's voice acting and script are terrible. Zoe 2's script was way too literal and felt copied and pasted. The voice direction also wasn't very good. Daigo stops talking about your stupid comrades and just say friends for god's sake. Also, the Anime by Sunrise is pretty good. It stars a space trucker trying to reconnect with his kids.

I'm not sure I can entirely agree. Dingo definetely had the worst of it in ZOE 2 but everyone else was pretty good, especially Ken.

The anime is really good (it made me glad I saw Disney’s John carter) it has some pretty decent voice acting as well it was kinda jarring going from that to zoe2’s voice acting

The issue with ZOE2 was the translation job, not the original script. Its probably among the worst translations ever and makes the plot almost incomprehensible.
