To compare this to a Ranger you need to consider the base 4x4 Ranger with the 2.0 (same power as this). When you add tires and bedliner the Ranger is $57.5k and comes with basically nothing, has 2 speakers, steel wheels and a 6 speed auto. You need to jump up to $64k to actually have something that outperforms this in a Ranger, even then its the base model without any luxuries. I still like the Ranger over this all day but it shows how little you get for your money in a new ute in 2023. Personally waiting to see it Mitsubishi or even the next gen Chinese utes can bring some sense to the segment.

Canon X all you need. There are couple of 3rd party providers in Australia that do 10k upgrade kit. This includes towbar, roof racks, suspension, and bullbar. So, though closer to top raters, it’s still 25K less. Only you can decide of this is good value. I would go with X & 10-12k upgrade kit. If you can’t afford that, just go with the suspension upgrade.

@@metal.head. Hi, firstly, I would try GWM first. Recently, they have released upgrades for Ute. Also, I would try Savage online, Kings and ABS. Savage is online only, but if you’re comfortable doing your own upgrades, they have many parts. Kings have standard Recks and other accessories. ABS doesn’t make anything specific for GWM, however, if you give them specifications, they can custom rig existing accessories to fit. Hope that helps. C

Sounds like a suspension upgrade and a remap would make this thing a bit of a beast. Especially for the price. You'd still have plenty of change left over compared to an equivalent spec ute from one of the big boys. Still the reliability and longevity questions are yet to be answered. Only time will tell I guess.

Touring and off-roaders will change the suspension including shockers when they lift the vehicle for better clearance. Won't be long for the after market kits to hit the shelves. A throttle controller will allow nine different settings for throttle input, both softer and/or more aggressive. So really, all of your listed short comings are not really.
@jerrymyahzcat
@jerrymyahzcat 11 месяцев назад
Throttle controllers are a marketing ploy and a waste of money - with decent terrain modes the job is done without a throttle controller as it does it for you. Another thing being sold to the masses who are unsuspecting. Unless you have a rubbish 4x4 you don’t need a throttle controller.

Hi Sam. Im curious about the steering feel complaint as I have seen another review and I'm pretty certain there was a button on the dash featuring a steering wheel symbol, once touched it gave three options I think. The results were tremendous in their opinion, I'm struggling to recall if throttle control was varied by options that button offered as well. Other reviews say the suspension has been altered, 30mm lift, wider track than standard, hence the wheel arch flares but im not in a position to verify this. In SA (South Africa) it comes standard with winch built into front bar & tow bar built into rear bar, but apparently not compliant with aus standards, hence we wait. Its certainly got heaps if fruit, the underbody protection is great for a standard factory supplied vehicle, and all that fruit doesn't cause warranty issues, its all covered in the ever so generous warranty, do not overlook that point, as dealers winge about aftermarket attachments voiding warranty in some cases. Only thing I see could have been better, the front steel bar could have been more protective but im guessing wouldn't be compliant in other world markets. If, and I say if this had a Japanese badge on it, well just lets say other manufacturers would be in a world of hurt right now, no ifs, no buts, the market would flock to it. I saw a GWM ute on the road just nth of Gulgong a week ago, it had a very aggressive large mud tyre on off set rims, lifted and it truly looked as an offroad beast should. Amazing how the beefier look bleated out the appearance of the oversized grill, it all became in respective so to speek. Looked absolutely awesome. Yes, country life is accepting these utes as an alternative to main players.

Thanks for the comment. There is adjustable steering feel, just makes the resistance heavier or lighter but doesn't remove the feel of relative vaugeness (compared to others in the segment). I don't see it being particularly helpful. Can you link me with the review that is more positive about it? I'm keen to see it. I spoke to GWM about the suspension specifically, because I wanted to know. And I was told it's unchanged, at least for the Australian market. I agree, it's a good looking ute. Once the driving experience and ride quality improves even more, it will be right amongst the segment I think. - Sam

@@jerrymyahzcat being its got an electric steering motor on the coloum there is not much that can be done via pressing a button other then weight which is resistance levels, its not like an elctro-hydrulic steering rack which is the best of both worlds. Sadly nearly every new motor vehicle has electric steering these days save for a few from Toyota like Fortuner and Hilux which still retain tried and true and best for feel hydraulic steering but even that is going away with the next generation versions since they are based on TNGA-F platform.

Always amazed at the underpowered claims, then often the same people say it Chinese, just buy a second hand hilux. How the hell do you justify buying second hand, high mileage Hilux that has similar power that will drive like a five year old car with zero tech, like why? With a GWM you'll get superior comfort, great tech, truly superior drive as whilst outputs are the same, the GWM is running it thru the 8 speed box. Disbelievers, read spec below directly from Toyota. 2017 Toyota HiLux SR5 (4x4) Specifications The HiLux is a four-wheel drive 4 door with 5 seats, powered by a 2.8L DIESEL TURBO 4 engine that has 130 kW of power (at 3400 rpm) and 420 Nm of torque (at 1400 rpm) via a Six-speed Manual No reason to buy second hand when you can have all the benefits of brand new complete with warranty, haha, it's a no brainer to ponder over. Just buy it, ignore idiotic advise.
@Drivecomau
@Drivecomau 11 месяцев назад
Power and torque on paper is one thing, and the driving experience, gearing etc is another. You'd have to back-to-back compare the two to truly know, but i'd say the 2.8-litre HiLux is better to drive powertrain-wise. The automatic gearbox on the same car also has a higher torque output, so you'd be better comparing apples with apples. - Sam
@ianweal3081
@ianweal3081 11 месяцев назад
Thanks Sam, food for thought but I'd be opting for new zero millage with long warranty over the second hand hilux. Had overlooked stats I sourced for Hilux were for manual, yes the auto did have more torque from memory. Hilux drives well, yes but the interior is far from comfortable, infotainment poor, no good tech at all in comparison to what's on offer here. Having said all that, I'm not in the market for a ute currently but should the coil rear make its way into the Aus market as offered elsewhere, that could certainly sway me over, I have a passionate dislike for leaf sprung vehicles.

I disagree about wanting all 4 wheels rotating at the same speed. In most cases this is actually not desirable. Because wheels usually track different radii - it’s not often you actually want them all rotating identically and this is where a decent traction control system (possibly even with torque vectoring) or better still, like the Rivian, an electric motor at each wheel to have each wheel completely controlled independently of the others - is preferred. Often times a diff lock just causes both wheels on the axle to spin and slip together. I suspect that “snorkel” is not sealed and waterproof and thus is just an RAI.

As usually you can see at Chinese cars, this has a lot of show off things and misses real stuff. From what I've seen, suspension tuning and articulation are not off-road ready, tires are not LT and could be bigger, sidesteps are flimsy. Yes, the price is good and interior is nice too. But overall it fills as a raw product and more for show than for real business. And long-term reliability is a question mark. at least for me.
