I am gay, and never once after coming out has a medical professional sought my wife’s opinion on anything. Yet before I was out, everything I did was somehow weighed against the needs and desires of an imaginary “future husband” without regard to my health or safety. Misogyny at its finest.

Yeah, same. It's like someone needs to stand up in front all past, current, and future medical professionals or everyone in world and say the following or something to this effect: "I am a human person and I own my uterus. No, no one else decides for me what happens to it and no man or child can rent it or any other part or sum of my body. In the past I never had doctors listen to me when I told them I couldn't possibly be pregnant, even when I was in middle school. It wasn't until I got the Nexplanon implant that people listened to me when I said it, but ONLY if I told them I had it. Definitely not the same thing since what you experienced was paternalistic, misogynistic bullshit, but sort of similar in that a lot of medical professionals don't seem interested in listening to cis women or female-presenting people when it comes to reproductive things.

@@ziagochenaur2980 I could never truly fathom the fear you must have gone through, or any young mom/dad. Having a baby is not all sunshine and rainbows, it's painful and risky in our world now. Though I'm sure holding your child's tiny hand when they are finally born makes everything worth it (wouldn't know, I'm not a parent though I hope to be one day :)). My cousin got pregnant when she was a teenager too, and now she's a registered nurse and a proud mom of three. At one point, she managed two jobs, college, and the kids (two young adults, one still a teen) all by herself (husband isn't really helpful unfortunately). She is truly one of the strongest people I know, and for that woman in that vine to make fun of teenage pregnancy like it's nothing made me see red. I hope for you and your child all of the best! Sad reality is that there are many places in the world (e.g. the US) where the man is seen as the “head of the household” and his opinion is the only one that matters. Protip: don’t marry these people, they have a very high rate of domestic violence.

Other thing that bothers me is that none of these medical carers apear to know that adoption is an option... Like, it's not the end of the world if I supposedly meet someone that supposedly wants a child and I supposedly change my mind, we could still adopt.
@MerelvandenHurk
@MerelvandenHurk 2 года назад
@@lari.2909 Indeed... and even if they consider adoption they're still going to assume that every woman will eventually want to carry her own child instead of adoption or surrogacy. It's maddening and infuriating that people still assume that carrying a child is somehow the holy grail of human experience, or even that having a child is something that everyone supposedly *should* want. Like, stop fucking telling people what they should want, stop assuming that if they don't want children they're fooling themselves. It's degrading and dehumanizing to speak to people that way.

When my mom tried to get her tubes tied 29 years ago the female nurse gave her a lecture about how she would regret it. This is about how the convo went. Nurse "You might want more kids someday." Mom "Nope, just the one." Nurse "Your husband might want more." Mom " He is also good with just the one, and left the number of kids to me. " Nurse "You might get remarried and your new husband might want biological kids." Mom had to report the nurse to the male doctor. He was very angry and had a talk with the nurse about how out of line she was. He apologized whole heartily to my mom. Btw my parents are still happily married and thanking God they decided on just one child. IDK what this nurse expected my mom to do, form her life around the wants of an imaginary second husband's? But not every one is on it for preventing pregnancy. Some are prescribed it for stopping a cyst from growing or regulating hormones, and may wish not to become infertile after the treatment. And yes, in some cases, if the doc does not do blood hormonal tests before priscribing it and so prescribes an unsuitable brand, they can cause more harm than good and mess your hormones forever. That last joke is really upsetting. I knew an acquaintance who was pregnant in high school and I found her crying in the lockers. When I asked what's up she confided in me that not only was she being bullied and harassed by close friends about it, but she was afraid of going to the doctors for this EXACT reason. It took me a whole week to convince her to get proper care and a couple of months before she was eating right and feeling good about herself again. All that furry I felt in that locker room, I just refelt watching that.

I have asked numerous doctors about having my tubes tied over the years because I don't want kids, and I've gotten similar responses to the girl in the video. I just switched doctors again earlier this year because when I asked the last one about it, the OBGYN said, "What if you meet someone some day that wants them?" I'm almost 35 and have never wanted kids - pretty sure I know what I want by now. Why should a *potential* partner's wants override mine? If I met someone that wanted kids, and I don't, obviously we'd be incompatible. It's SO frustrating.

When prepping her, the hospital advised they would need my Dad's signature on the consent form to confirm he agreed to her having the hysterectomy. My Mum put her foot down and refused point blank for them to even pass the form across to him. She told them that it was her decision whether or not to agree to have sex, it was her decision to be on whatever version of birth control she had been taking for the previous 10 years and she had never needed anyone else's permission for any other surgery that she had been through, she did not require anyone else's permission and she would not allow them to make a mockery of her right to make a decision about her own health. I had one at 12 because I had a lot of GI issues and they wanted to be as least invasive as they could to check my track. I kind of wish when I had a cat scan when I 16 that they that again, however the CT turned out to be really helpful because they found benign cysts on my ovaries, likely what caused some issues the whole time, others were caused by general GI issues. Nothing major or to be concerned and I am on birth control to help regular my massively bad estrogen level. My migraines are decreased and I no longer have the same cramping I had back then. There were multiple occasions when I would ask questions out of genuine curiosity for a teenage girl and I was brushed off as if I didn't need to know about how part of my body worked. Worst thing was when I had to be swabbed for a test and rather than explain and try to get me to relax, as I was already nervous, they just went ahead with the test. I left that appointment traumatized and to this day I am afraid to go to an obgyn for fear of this happening again. This happened when I was 17 and I am now 23.

I trimmed the story, but it's a wild ride. Back in 2018 to 2019 (just before the new year's day), my appendix exploded and it gave me belly cramps during hours, so my parents drove me to the health unity (it's not an hospital, but it's the gateway to one). I was literally crying in pain, not being able to properly sit and having trouble to even breath, it's not a common sight for a fully-grown woman in pajamas to be crying and clinging to a graying mother at 2 AM, right? So, after half an hour, the doc said to my mother who entered with me because I wasn't being able to properly walk: "Are you sure she isn't pregnant? We can go check it, the ultrasound machine is being used now, but we can put her in the line, maybe it will take 20 minutes" She flatly said "she is just fat", (I think I said something mid-groan "my belly has folds, pregnant people don't have folds, do they?") he seemed to be in shock for a moment, like he didn't know what to do, then he asked if I was in college and I said I just got accepted, so his answer: "she is just stressed a bit, I'll give her some painkillers and you can go home", my mother insisted to do a little exam just to be sure nothing was wrong, but he refused, justifying that many teens (I was 22) came to the health unity saying they were in pain, had insomnia and other problems due to stress related to school. I was almost buying it since I was in fact under stressing times, but then my pain struck fully and I started to puke bile, just then he reluctantly decided to give me an exam to see what was wrong with me. Well, I survived, did the exam on the following morning, got to the hospital, got my surgery done, spent the new year's eve at the hospital and got home on the following day. But I still think: why did I had to literally puke in the front of a doctor just so he could bother to make an exam in my belly, since he seemed eager to do that when he thought I could be pregnant? Like, he really wanted to do an ultrasound just to see if I was pregnant, but after we (me and my mom) said that I wasn't, he just pretended it wasn't necessary? (let alone the fact I could have been examined for pregnancy in 20 minutes according to him, but had to wait about 5 hours afterwards, at least the painkillers knocked me asleep for most of the time) I mean, how many adults you see hunching over and holding back their tears because of pain to the point their need help to walk? I know some people can be overly dramatic (or have low tolerance for pain, which is my situation), but I think it was... An experience that I don't know how to classify. For a bit of context: I'm Brazilian, being barred from doing exams isn't the norm. Delaying it isn't uncommon, but it's very unlikely to happen when someone shows up in pain. Also, we don't have medical/hospital bills to pay, so this isn't a form of "treating the poor folks like trash".

I definitely teared up when you said, “this is why people don’t want to go to the doctor.” It’s such a double-edged sword; I get told to go to the doctor if I’m in pain and then when I go, get told that my pain is “probably just my menstrual cycle” or whatever. But if I don’t go, I get spoken to like a 5 year old the next time I decide to go because my pain is so bad. Never ending cycle. I wanted to ask if you’d do a video on endometriosis. Or point me in the direction of a good video or website with some actual good advice and facts. I’ve tried to do my own research and everything is so random. One doctor says this and one person says that. It’s hard to find someone to trust and someone to confide in. Thank you for these videos.

Endo is really tough I was diagnosed 7 years ago and some people still don't get that even without a disorder, menstrual pain and symptoms are very real and very disruptive. I went to the hsosp for the recent one becuase I hadn't slept for 2 days due to pain. I got a pregency test which came. Back negetive and told to get over thyne self. Yeah, I'm waiting on a diagnosis, but even if I don't have endometriosis, I've still suffered severe pain for the past 14 years. But of course, I thought it was normal, because everyone tells you that period pain is normal. My mum tells me (despite her best intentions) that I might just have a low pain tolerance. But even if true, that doesn't mean I don't deserve help. Even my own Doctor dismisses it. One time when I had gone to the doctor for a check-up and the doctor asked how I was doing and I said I felt a little depressed from things that was going on in my life, and from my period pain. She responded with "Well we all have period pain, so there's no use worrying about that." I've also spent the past 2 years trying to find the right medication without giving me side effects, because the doctor and I only made the connection recently that a condition I had since I was 12, was caused by the pain medication I have been taking... since I was 12. It's been tough trying to manage it all, but I think I've found the right meds now, at least I hope.

It depends on the birth control and the kind of migraines. For example if your migraines have an aura (sensory stuff, usually visual, before/during a migraine) it's recommended you go with progesterone only pills to reduce the risk of them becoming worse. Obviously that's assuming that your hormone cycle isn't causing them and various other factors. Some of the combination hormone birth controls have different effects on migraines and obviously hormones effect everyone differently.
@Annie_Annie__
@Annie_Annie__ 3 года назад
Mary Beth I had trouble finding a doctor that would prescribe them, honestly. I take the mini-pill (progesterone only pill) and even so, a couple doctors were reluctant/unwilling. I noticed that an obgyn is more likely to talk to you about it and weigh the benefits vs the risks with you than a GP/family practice doctor. I started getting the impression that GPs are more-or-less told "people that have migraines can’t take birth control because of a risk of blood clots and stroke" whereas obgyns are more likely to know the nuances of it. It’s incredibly frustrating because while I don’t want to suffer a stroke and I take the increased risk seriously, I can NOT function and live my life when I’m having migraines 3 weeks a month.

HRT is not to stop menopause (that happened when the ovaries were removed) but rather to help you manage the symptoms and to help reduce the risk of side effects of premature menopause. There is probably something which you can tolerate it might just take a specialist to find it.

The last one is really disheartening. I get sick a lot due to an autoimmune disease which leads to me to stays in the hospital a lot. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve woken up in the middle of the night to hear nurses (trying to whisper) making fun of their patients or telling other nurses about their patients personal medical problems. Obviously it’s not every nurse and there’s lot that are very professional and respectful! It just makes me scared to get help thinking their gunna talk about me once I leave or tell their co workers about my medical problems

I know that feeling, intially I had it too. I've sort of stopped caring about it now because they can joke all they want about me, it only shows how horrible of a person they are (at least in that moment). One day, they might wake up, and realize with deep regret how they feel about those jokes and it could plague them for a long while (seen that happen). But me? I won't have that issue. I'll be working on dreams and goals I have. Books I want to write and places I want to see. Plus, their opinions aren't the ones that matter to me, it's the kind and compassionate people I do find in my life that deserve that respect. Don't be scared to discuss your medical issues, you could be risking your life, since autoimmune diseases typically have no sympathy or patience.

I also have an autoimmune disorder which I've been battling with does 14 years. I'm sorry to hear that you don't feel comfortable with nursing staff. I've never heard the nurses gossiping about patients before, if you have heard them then they should be reported. All my experiences have been positive and I'm pretty thankful because I always feel relaxed and comfortable seeking medical help when I need it.

Imagine being a pregnant 16 year old who saw that doctor, seeing that video and realising the doctor you went to for care is making fun of you on a public forum. Teen pregnancy isn’t funny, making fun of patients isn’t funny.

I just wanna say that when I got pregnant at 17 and went to a doctor that wasn't my usual, she was so so nice. When I came into the room I immediately started crying and she knew what was up. We did the ultrasound at which she saw that I was actually 19 weeks along already. She wasn't judgemental at all and after that she talked me through everything and talked about options. She told me that if I wanted to keep my baby that's great but if I don't and want to give it up for adoption that's is also great. No pressure at all. She even was as nice as to not charge the pregnancy because here in Germany you can only charge one pregnancy per quarter and since she wasn't my normal gynecologist she told me to go to my doctor the next week since it was Friday because I lived quite far away from her office and especially in the last month it would be too much to always drive there. I'm just so glad that I went to that doctor because after that I felt much better about it. I was so scared of being judged by the staff but that didn't happen at all. Still think it was the nicest thing to nit charge the pregnancy since I would have had so much stress fixing that with my insurance company

My cousin also got pregnant at 17 and she went to the gyn completely undecided on if she wanted the baby or not (she was just short over a month when she noticed) and they were so incredibly professional about her situation that they did the ultrasound with her and didn't even say things like "baby" or that they can see "it" on the ultrsound. She told me all they said was "we can confirm that you are pregnant" (in deutsch wars "Es liegt bei Ihnen eine Schwangerschaft vor" also noch neutraler) informed her very neutrally about her options and only when she had decided to keep the baby a few days later they started saying words like "embryo, baby, infant, etc" and showed their joy for her.

I’m not trying to be mean or judgmental, I am just genuinely curious. How did it take you almost 5 months to realize you were pregnant? Were you on birth control so your period was weird?

Thank you for commenting on the last type of video. ● I've been subjected to malpractice and plain old unprofessional behavior by numerous nurses and doctors who have a negative stigma of anyone (especially mothers) who used to struggle with substance use disorder or have prescriptions for controlled medications. ● I was addicted to opiates after being prescribed at a young age. After a long battle and journey to get clean... (literal blood sweat tears and more🥴) ... I've finally been clean for 3+ years now. Unfortunately, this path was filled with MANY admissions to the ER and hospital. I have underlying chronic conditions (part of why I was prescribed those strong meds in the first place) that created a perfect storm in my body during withdrawals. ● Physical dependence on opiates is tough foreveryone, but for me, trying to get off them almost killed me a few times because I did it cold turkey. ● Finally got it right after using detox, inpatient/outpatient, and methadone maintenance therapy. I continue some useful therapy treatments till this day to keep myself strong enough to function normally day to day . And for me and my specific body including my mental and physical health conditions I deal with, i have become a medical marijuana patient. I use micro doses and that has enabled me to not only stay clean, but also eliminated ANY trips to the hospital or ER for the longest time ever in my life. 😊 ● Anyways, one time in particular that I experienced an awful attitude by a "professional" , was when I had a nurse tell me and my new boyfriend at the time (now my husband) that the ONLY reason I was having severe ibs , panic attacks and cyclical vomiting syndrome SYMPTOMS, was due to me using marijuana. Not any type of actual underlying conditions that I've been diagnosed with. She said that those diagnoses must have been false. I explained that I know that can happen in large doses of thc heavy strains... however, I use .5grams of low thc 1:1 cbd medicines per month and that would be impossible since I haven't been smoking since I was 7 lol... She persisted and said that if I disagreed I could just find care at another hospital. • She also refused to give me my daily heart medication because she felt that I didn't need to "be more sedated" . •Luckilly the next doctor on shift administered it because my BP shot to 170 and my HR was 125 within a few hours. ● That wasn't the only experience I had but it's just awful when professionals don't act professionally. No one that deals with patients should judge or stigmatize their patients, ever, but especially not publically. 😊💘Thank you for pointing this out. Hopefully as someone in the field yourself, more people will listen to you and take your words to heart!💘 Bedside manner is greatly underrated sometimes!

I hate when people try to convince me that having an SO is needed. Um… no? My wife and I are both ace, sometimes we wanna cuddle. Mostly, we just want to read or watch the cats run around on catnip. Isn’t emotional closeness just fine? It works for us… (we just celebrated five years together, too)
