Pronounced "say-bo" because the T is silent. Like how the last C is silent in Leclerc

That is correct. My apologies to all those who have commented on this, thank you for the correction. I would update the audio track but You tube doesn't allow this, so I pinned the correction. For those who know French, Sabot the "T" is silent as well. Thank you.

Another countermeasure is seen on the Turret front of the Leopard 2 since the A5 model. Armor spaced away from the main armor at a distance longer than the Darts fired will induce tumbling of the dart after it has fully cleared the spaced armor. Makes it hit the main armor sideways completely neutralizing it in best case scenarios but reduces Armor penetration significantly in general.
@hazardous458
@hazardous458 3 года назад
The arrowhead damages the round before impact of the main armor. That’s why it’s effective. The space doesn’t need to be longer than the dart, it only needs to be angled. The wedges can be countered with a round strong enough to resist shearing forces.

Most of the MBT fire APFSDS on smoothbore barrels because the rifled could decrease the velocity. But if need to fire at rifled, the APFSDS rounds had to fit a spinning ring to preserve the velocity for the projectiles.

Militaries have been experimenting with telescoped small arms ammo for a long time but haven't been able to get it good enough for adoption - I had thought the concept as a whole just had flaws that hadn't been worked out yet and didn't know the big boys with smooth bores have been using them for a long time.

And as someone who spent a lot of years not only learning French but living WITH French people, yeah, the “-ot” is isn’t pronounced either with a T or an H consonant sound.

Explosive reactive armor is used to protect against HEAT rounds, by preventing the penetrating jet from forming. It has absolutely no effect on a sabot round, which will simply pass right through ERA without detonating it.
@alimplays334
@alimplays334 Год назад
No, No, The ERA effects both APFSDS and HEAT rounds. cause as soon as something hit ERA it explodes and send a plate outwards which either ruins the angle of a HEAT round which results in lesser penetration or for APFSDS it discombobulate APFSDS by ruining the angle of approach, so instead of nose of APFSDS hitting the armor, the side of APFSDS hits the armor resulting in lesser penetration. so, if the ERA is angled the more damage it prevents.
@kek621k
@kek621k 6 месяцев назад
@@alimplays334 even then ERA is mostly for HEAT, the penetration reduction is too insignificant to also work against APFSDS sure it may work on better on older rounds but i dont think they give troops such old rounds that literally degrade pen like a quarter

The thing is, everyone here is wrong. Most armour piercing rounds are designed to cause shrapneling inside the tank. The actual rod usually isn't the thing doing the main damage, but the shrapnel that falls off the armour when the armour is penetrated. If you are in the way of all that glowing hot metal shrapnel, it'll probably have an impact of a huge shotgun blast.

@H1MIN
@H1MIN 4 года назад
That depends on what hit the tank. There is a good book by Lt. Belton Y Cooper, tasked with "recovery, repair, and maintenance" of American WWII tanks back into service in the ETO. While some of the book is of debate, there is no question that sometimes it was a messy job cleaning out tank crew's remains. The book is a very interesting one: Death Traps: The Survival of an American Armored Division in World War II. Thanks for your comment.

when an APFSDS hit and penetrate the tank, there is no time for poisoning the crew, only up to 7000*C temperature for less than second inside tank also high pressure air which fraction bones and internal organs of crew blow up, also fragments from the rood also from cracked plate of tank hull will penetrate the body of crew, then another explosion of ammunition cartridges in the tank which is result of fragments which hit and penetrate the ammo cartridges full with explosive and initiate to burn such explosive inside the tank hull, and for next 5 seconds such high temperature will bake the crew body's, then some more explosions in row which come from exploding tank shells (HE or HEAT) which explode like result of high temperature inside the tank, which results on total collapse of the tank and everything inside. Literally the tank inside will melt. Terrible death... You can see fragments inside tank hit by APFSDS. Imagine if the tank was full of ammunition and crew... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KU0_9ika42o.html

APFSDS round was the evolved predecessor ammunition call APDS (Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot). It's gives the projectiles more stabilised and increase penetrate effect. But the core materials of the projectiles can have different effects during penetrate. While Tungston core is the main material for the APFSDS core in most of the countries, the US use Depleted Uranium as the main material for the APFSDS core to maximise the penetrate effects.
@01Laffey
@01Laffey 4 года назад
They use DU because its cheap as it is a waste product from the enriching process for nuclear reactor fuel and they haven't got many major qualms with using a heavy metal that is toxic if it enters the body and has low radioactivity. Tungsten on the other hand is needed in industrial processes such as machining.

russian ERA have an effect against kinetic penetrators as inside the brick there is an angled plate which when the explosive set off is pushed out and due to the fact that it's angled it goes to "snap" the penetrator causing it to lose penetration... it can theoretically decrease the penetration up to 30% but realistically around 15%.

When I was an LAV crewman in the marines, we learned about the APFSDS-T (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot with Tracer) rounds for the M242 25mm bushmaster chaingun that our LAV-25's used. The projectiles are depleted uranium, and supposedly their effective range was 4+ kilometers. Thing is, though, the cost per round is so high that they don't even issue those rounds anymore... But supposedly they exist.

0:15 the sabot peels away. I've seen videos of the primer cap ejecting into the tank. What exactly happens to the tube/shell casing looking part of the round? Does it burn up and what kind of material is it made out of?
@Kurogumo
@Kurogumo 2 года назад
The casings of these rounds are made of a special polymer that burns up completely when the round is fired, it is made this way so that the interior of the tank will stay relatively uncluttered even after an long engagement.
@RD-170
@RD-170 6 месяцев назад
Most tanks use a metal baseplate on the casing for better reliability, which is seen in the video, whilst the bulk of the case is made of burnable material that is destroyed when fired Russian powder charges work in a similar way, just in two pieces and with a hard-cloth shell instead of polymer. The metal plate is also used to remove heat from the gun, and is often ejected after firing (russian tanks), or left inside during combat (many western tanks)
