Taking a look at an air conditioning installation that the electricians butchered.
Hello Everyone,
In this video I take a look at a recent air conditioning installation. The HVAC contractor and roofer did a great job on their ends but the electrical contractor butchered their work. This is not the case with all electricians, many electrician do quality work. Unfortunately, this one did not on this job. I am a NJ Master HVACR contractor license holder, home renovator and handyman. I have extensive experience in the HVAC field along with adequate knowledge in plumbing, electrical and carpentry to perform most tasks around a house. The job, although not pretty is perfectly legal. I’m sure the flex coming from 2 different pitch pockets is one for power the other for controls. They could have set the unistrut blocks made for roof, ran EMT of some rigid between the penetration and then unit then flexed up to the units off the conduit. Again not pretty but not in violation of code.

Yes I assume you are right, the control wire got mixed up for two of the units. In my experience, I am use to seeing some rigid and then transitioning to flex like your saying.

Hiring the lowest bidder will yield work like that, I've caught guys cutting corners

Why didn't the electrician use the same pitch pocket with a hard EMT conduit then convert it over to seal tight close to the end of the run! I agree they did a crappy job man

The HVAC install is not that impressive either, the lines aren't level and straight they're held together with duct tape. There should also be some kind of support in case some roof monkey decides to climb onto the pipe, roof block with unistrut etc. When you go through the side of the pitch pocket, you should not go around the insulation you should cut the insulation away in the section where you seal to to stop water from being able to transmit down the insulation, plus even though it is a UV resistant installation it will eventually fail causing large gaps for water to flow through.

Yes you bring up some valid points. There are certainly things that I would have done different. I have seen duct tape used over zip ties because it blends in with the armaflex but I would agree that duct tape will not last in the outdoor elements. Also I am interested see how well the UV resistant pipe insulation holds up and if the penetration points leak.

The best way to do these penetrations is to do a proper roof jack and then use a 180 degree down-turned metal elbow with a proper storm collar.
