So, should you hack your art school education, or go to College, University or Academy? It can be done, but be informed first. This is probably the most asked question I get right now and I am happy to sound in with hopes it will help with an informed decision.

Honest thoughts? here's the real world honest thought, you can make money with art without having to spend anything you could spend $60 on a drawing tablet and sketch out a few designs for characters, you can do photo edits, retouching, you can do so called album covers for musicians, flyers, logos, you can get paid 50-100 flat rate or $75/hr you can charge anything you want and make good money and make a name for yourself you do not need to listen to assholes with degrees that make you think twice about even setting foot in the art world. i learned photoshop through youtube and lots of hours and dedication i learned it well and i had entered photography class in high school i had a teacher that would always pick on me and never let me be creative with my digital camera she wanted us to work with slr film cameras it was fine at first to learn the history part of it but it got really annoying when i would present my work to her and she would throw it away and 2 years after that i went on to doing wedding photography and got paid $400 flat for a full days work to some that might not seem like very much put compare that to $40-70 at a job where your being controlled and being told what to do and not being able to call the shots. what im trying to say if im saying anything is you can make money right now, today, have confidence in yourself and don't let asswipes who think they know it all to bring your hopes down. you can sell anything and people will buy it.

+alvinraydj3 Good point. I dig your passion. I too did a lot of artistic odd jobs during and after and during HS. I painted jackets, jet skis, cars, mailboxes all in that 100 buck range, and all that money went back into buying paint haha. People should not let anyone tell them their art is not good. I have seen art that is not 'there' yet, but it was still good in many respects. .. basically, a lot of people 'in power' during your formative art careers are full of bs, and don't know what they are talking about.

Hey Rob, really glad you made this video, since I have these doubts. I'm 28 and I've worked in a couple of game studios( mobile game work) and I was considering whether to gain a proper education online or physically. I've been in the field for 3 years approx. and I've constantly tried improving, more recently with tutorials on schoolism. I've made a lot of progress, but I'm starting to feel the limitations of working by myself and having never been exposed to a high lvl professional environment or training. A friend of mine flew over to the USA and is doing an exorbitantly priced design course( hopefully good), since he felt the need for it and his family chipped in. He's pretty good and can benefit, i'm sure. I'm anxious about continuing without training, since I could be signing my death warrant career wise if i don't. I personally really like art and work on it compulsively anyway. I'm happy to keep learning and am glad to get better, but i feel pressured to buck up and get an education. Having anxiety dictate a career progression step is kind off a bummer. I live in India, btw... Hi from India. Thank you for this vid. It helped me understand some differences in approaches.

Heya Pronoy, Yeah it can be tough to decide what to do. I think some of the courses would yield great results, but I also think some of them could be a waste of time. Do your research if you ever do decide to try one. From what I understand there is a fair bit of work in India. If I were you, I would get in one of the hard core concept art groups that is not afraid to really give you some good feedback, and try to network from there. Don't be afraid to devote every hour you can to your art. It's not going to come quick or easy.

Thanks! Your video's really helped me to make a decision on what I want to do for a living. After years of experimenting, concept art feels the most natural to me . Cheers from the Netherlands.

Yeah the design world is amazing, so even when you start drawing, don't stop looking for your own specialty.

I learned on my own for a few years before going to art school.I agree with what he's saying but only if you are going to a good art school with motivated students.one school I went to in particular, little to no students were inspired so networking there was out of the question.many of them where in their third year and never touched a 3d program.that made me believe that networking isn't always what people make it seem.

Wow I can't imagine getting to 3rd year and not having 3D on lock. That is nuts to me.

How long is art School if you got a 4 year degree already and get a recording arts degree with general education and all? I want to finish a recording arts degree, learn how to create an entry portfolio and go into the 200k debt as an investment I've already figured out that I'm going to be a dedicated student. I'm 20 years old right now and should be finished with this degree by the time I'm 22 at least so I think I'm still young enough to pull this off. I know I'm dedicated.

I think I graduated art school at 24, the one thing about art is that live experiences, help your art, so don't feel like you need to rush too much. The only program I totally know is ACCD, and it was 8 terms, so fastest would be 2.6 years. If you already have your gen ed done that is.. if not, you have to add a couple terms to get those classes in.

Ah you went to art center! That's the school I'm the most interested in currently, at my high school we had a representative from art center come to the "art club" and he showed a lot of examples of entertainment design and talked about the 90%+ employment rate and all of this information on industry based art that I had no idea about... Well I talked to him after class and he gave me his card to email him, well I emailed him and I told him a bit about myself and my interest in concept art (I don't remember what I typed but it was a lot and probably obnoxious) and then he asked me if I can send him some thumbnail sketches and things from my sketchbook... I had nothing prepared, and I stopped drawing in sketchbook as soon as I started practicing designs due to some anxiety I was having over starting the sketchbook and the quality of the work (I know... I know...) and I emailed him back saying I did not have anything prepared and could not make it all the way to Pasadena....
@creative4848
@creative4848 8 лет назад
And I never emailed him again... I was extremely nervous every email I sent and I can't get myself to contact him again as I still have nothing interesting prepared... I'm not sure if this is just a creative slump or I might not even have the creativity in me to produce something original I'd be willing to share... What is your suggestion? Should I email back in the future awkwardly? ( the first email was a few months ago...) should I send it from a different email (my other ones username was a play on words with the name Warhol and it probably looked like I tried to hard... Didn't mean to use that email...) and hope he wouldn't match my name with the previous email... I'll try to get some sketches and renders done in the coming weeks

+Creative You don't have to rush if you are still in HS. In fact you probably shouldn't. At ACCD, the average student is 22 I believe. Many students have a couple years of college or even a degree before getting into ACCD. You have to be very focused when you are there, there is no party scene, and there is a very limited social scene for the top students. So email your guy back, and say you are still working towards your goal and you will send him something when you have it.

for ACN, what major do you recommend for concept artists?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Not sure what ACN is, but illustration, and computer graphics is kinda a quick fix. Make sure you get 3-D skills and anatomy drawing/painting. ..and landscape painting. Also design courses are key, but they can be named different things.

Look Im sure you have more experience than I do for sure , just being a student myself but I felt that right off the bat this video was biased. Most of your arguments can be refuted, I'm sure you can review them and see it for yourself , I won't be refuting all of them , but for example , CGMA has a curriculum planned out that students can adhere to if they want ( I'm sure you know what cgma is) , there's plenty of pros teaching online and mentoring people on the other side of the planet ( eg:Anthony Jones , John J. Park, James Paick and so many others) and there's a giant community of artists online that pass on work and that know each other only through the internet. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages and I could go into this very minuciously given that I have made my research extensively before taking the decision to go through online education and "self-taught" practices ( I use this term because ,yes , I'm physically alone ). So just to finish , I think you should rethink this and look at it through the eyes of an actual student that doesn't want to shell out exorbitant ammounts of money.

+Guilherme Nunes Great post! Agreed, I am biased on some points, because I know first hand that James Paick's Art Center class 'in person' is better than watching his video online. But that is not always possible, due to budget or location. Online is a perfect solution for people who can't get exposure to amazing artists otherwise.

If you a gifted, meaning you are born with the talent to do art work, you don't need school. School is for people that have no idea what they want.
