Pick The Best Art School For Your Concept Art Career. 

Im currently 34, and went to Pratt at age 25. I can tell you Art Schools can make a difference but you have to apply yourself, AND you have to be at the right point in your life to understand what your getting into. Aside from financial considerations, a high schooler needs an above average work ethic to make it at any top art school, (assuming they get in) I was NOT ready at age 18 to go to Pratt, and it took me to live in the world a little bit for me at 25 to have the maturity and wherewithal to develop a portfolio capable of getting into an SVA or a Pratt or a Parsons or an Art Center etc. Even then a student needs to realize the standard at Art school is not the standard thats out there. The standard thats out there is people like the Level Up guys or my friend who draws GL. In some ways I'm still fighting to get to that standard consistently. I would say hacking art school is possible.....but not for everyone. I needed the structure and the discipline of being around like minded peers but i suppose it can be done. A young guy should be aware though that the competition does not exist at that school. My advice to a freshman in high school who wants to do art would be hit the ground running now lol. Art school is not for everyone, especially at 18. I would have partied and flunked out of art school had I gotten in straight out of high school. A lot of kids need to develop the work ethic bc the kids that are at these schools largely have INSANE work ethics compared to the aggregate of their peers at regular university.

Pratts COM'D Dept is good, I think though being on the East Coast they are definitely behind the curve in terms of where the industry is headed. You can get a solid command of the fundamentals there and a lot of great teachers but even as recently as 07 there was still a heavy editorial focus and it seems a lot of the jobs have shifted over into entertainment design, comics, etc. At least for illustrators with a design skill set that can translate to concept artististry.

would be cool to see a video for people like me who are trying to do their best by picking and choosing classes from schools in the LA area. Trying to mimic a program, but sometimes it can be hard to make sure that i am learning all the essentials when i am the one trying to define my own path. I am also caught between trying to be a more generalized concept designer, or trying to focus on a very specific path (such as creature design). Always love these videos!

Hey Rob! Awesome advice btw. So right im doing some classes at a community college then plan to transfer to artcenter for entertainment deisgn. I draw all the time im always trying to learn and have been focusing on life painting and drawing at the moment and i was wondering if you have any advice for things to practice while starting off. I hear the fundamentals a lot but im not to sure how yo go about practicing that and what they really are. If you have any advice on the fundamentals and what to practice id love to hear!

Would schoolism and learn squared be a good substitute if you cant find a good art school in ur state and dont want to sell a kidney to attend out of state school.
