Simone = SPHMTHPS Brian = B(R)PHDP Patrick = RLT(some sort of cyrillic R?)PH(C)K Josh = (J)TH(S)E Jenna = (J)SPPL Letters in parentheses are letters that have no equivalent meaning in (ancient) Greek. All in all, 10/10 transcription, guys, would cry tears of laughter and fury again
One of my favorite things in Hades is Zagreus. At first glance, from the color of his clothes and his relationship with his father, it can be easy to expect him to be just another edgy angry sasuke shadow the hedgehog. And then you find out he is genuinely just a very nice dude. Like aside from his father, he is very polite, sweet and kind to everyone. Even the first time he met Theseus he showed admiration and respect. And thats another thing. Zagreus isnt a goody goody, he will be a sassy bastard to people who deserves it. Mainly Hades and, after the first encounter, Theseus.
He's just a sweet boy who wants to see his mom and also slashes through hordes and hordes of the dead and is reborn from a pool of blood each time he is struck down and loves his partners and his dog
Well said! I mean, I think the idea is Zagreus was brought up *Prince* to the God of the Dead, so, that mannerism really shines through. It would've been so easy to just pidgeon-hole him into the rebellious spoilt kid stereotype, but, every time you gift something to someone... his genuine sincerity just touches my heart... and makes me question my own sincerity in my acts of kindness 😅
@@GoldGiggler thinking about it actually it makes sense that when so many people around him are powerful, temperamental gods and cosmic beings, that he learned to be respectful to most people he meets
@@fyrefrost1898 But he's even respectful to people he probably shouldn't be. Like Sisyphus. Zag is shown to be completely respectful and friendly to this damned soul, even before the events of the game. Even though Sisyphus is literally the Furys' whipping boy.
@@devinspencer1678 Idk if it has anything to do with it but ancient Greece did have the concept of xenia which means like you show politeness and hospitality to anyone you meet because they could be a god in disguise
@@aimelle3 Oh I could not see anyone other than Simone doing that video. Pat maybe, but he'd get too into the minutia of how hard the vampire milf would step on you.
As a roguelike hater I can confidently say he's pretty much the carrot in a stick that keeps me going every single time 😂 I love this game just for the chance of seeing him!
Ah, yes, SFMTHPS, the goddess of gameplay AND WRFDP, the god of art. Who could forget RLTRFSK, the god of narrative? And of course no pantheon would be complete without IFSI, the god of sound and ISPPL, the goddess of death.
literally when i say SFMTHPS i started laughing. like, the og game doesn't do that!! they're just doing the thing that shitty movies do to get a "greek vibe"
I didnt notice any wrong pronuntiations in the game, and I cant find anything on google, but this is the second comment about this, is there anyplace where they show this?
@@cervelmola It's not in the actual game itself, it's just for the joke-gods in the video. Supergiant did not use greek letters to spell, only Polygon did.
@Lauffles Thats just the tip of the iceberg in terms of roguelike gatekeeping. There are many fans who whish that "Roguelike" were like their name, games that are like the game "Rogue", and those people do not like the way the term is used these days. It's kinda understandable that they're upset, but they still shouldn't be so gatekeepish
@@KrakenG927 roguelike and roguelite actually are the same genre. You’ll see both terms used to describe the exact same mechanics. Just depends on literally what name a dev decides to use.
im surprised they got through this video without mentioning what a perfect match greek mythology and roguelike gameplay is. everyone in hades is fully aware death is a mild inconvenience at best and as a result, the fact that youre dying all the time is woven into the narrative itself, it _is_ the narrative in a lot of ways, as opposed to just dropping you back at the start with little to no explanation
So if Clayton's very tired face isn't makeup, y'all should let him nap on the clock. And also take away his switch during nap time. Also, BRIAN! I hope we still get to see him guest on polygon videos occasionally, he has great screen chemistry with the whole crew.
So while we're on the subject of Hades' voice acting, can we take a moment to appreciate Avalon Penrose (the voice of Megaera) and how she has THE BEST voice of any human, alive or dead?
i haven't played yet but megara needs to be susan egan (meg in hercules and rose quartz in steven universe).. i am not accepting criticism at this time
Not that you have to be a maths nerd to know who Pythagoras is, but it just... ripped a laugh out me (I'm just proving how good I am at overthinking things, don't mind me!)
I took two things from this: "Horny Tartarus" And The fact that Clayton thinks Zagreus is a "bad boy" when this lad is kawaii on the streets and kawaii in the sheets. The only mean bone in his body is against the enemies. Zagreus is too polite
I think it's because the trailer makes him seem kind of cocky and disrespectful but in reality he would apologize to a boulder for being slightly too rude to it
Polygon luring us into interesting game analysis through producers dressing up in cool outfits is my favourite video genre, maybe the only thing that could get me to stop my current run of hades-
My sister recently got a switch and I recommended Hades to her. She isn't as experienced as I am with video games so she was hesitant, but with God Mode she was able to enjoy the game at her own pace. Now she doesn't even need it anymore! Really shows that Supergiant wanted anyone to have fun with Hades
The rush of fear I felt when I saw "hades fan art" in that search box... those results could be pixelated for a lot of reasons, but I think we all know the real reason
What are the odds? I literally just picked up Hades 2 days ago, already done 55 runs, beat hades twice with the fists and shield, and almost maxed out my normal run mirror of fate except for fated
Chaos is non-binary and I love it! Why would the creator of the entire universe be bound by genders? It both makes sense and is so damn inclusive. I love it.
The poc rep, lgbtq rep that evens included Non binary; and differentiating body shapes. It’s so gorgeous and one of my favourite things about this game.
Wrong. I hate roguelikes and still don't find Hades any good or interesting. It suffers from the same problem all roguelikes have: Repetitiveness and difficulty. Yes i have tried it came to the last area then quit because it became way to hard. Hades is also the most grindy roguelike i have ever played. Getting upgrades takes way to long. Like doing 2-5 runs just to get one upgrade. Then replaying it again on even more difficult levels to get more. No thank you. Hades it not for a roguelike hater like me.
They did the impossible for me! They made me not care about dying! It helped me let go of my hate of dying and I've since played multiple other roguelikes!
I also love the fact that hades is lowkey an interior design sim -- i ,,,,may or may not have spent a solid two hours at one point trying to find what combinations of decorations look best for the house (personally I'm partial to gold, bone, and elysian decorations)
I don’t want to be that guy who says “Oh hi Brian” cause he’s the only reason I started watching Polygon and now I’m still watching Polygon and it’s great and Brian has his own channel and is having fun there and I shouldn’t feel this slight melancholy, but... Oh hi Brian.
this is a wonderful, informative, and persuasive video that has thoroughly convinced me to finally splurge on this game, and is also a really creative and cleverly formatted video essay that was extremely enjoyable and funny to watch. great job, clayton!
This game is great, but I kinda wish they had Apollo, the God of the sun & brother to Artemis, the Goddess of the hunt (& the moon). It's just kinda weird to me that you would leave him out, but the other Gods like Hera I kinda understand, & I can't really ask for a whole extra God's worth of content in an already massive game. Anyway, I knew I would love this game so much that I couldn't help myself & I bought the physical copy of Hades along with a book of all characters & a code for the soundtrack...
my boyfriend and I have gone splits on a switch lite so he can play Pokemon and I can play... whatever else I want to. I was considering Hades as my first game to try and now you've confirmed that decision for me! Awesome video too :D
Hades is perfect in almost every sense. It's a great game mechanically, and has a great story to tell. I actually think that Hades might be the first game where the video-game media has been pushed to all it's strenght while still telling a story that's worth telling. I see the media as being still quite immature as a whole and I'm eager to see what it's going to be like in a few decades if the world doesn't collapse by then. Hades is a glimpse onto the future of video-games as an art form. Not to mention that it has what is to me one of the best musical moments I've ever seen in a game. And it has lots of those, i won't spoil which one it is.
Honestly, I'm a huge fan of Supergiant games and I think a lot of what's fantastic about Hades has been true of many of their other games (art, characters, story, music, gameplay, world design, narration (their Bafta couldn't be more deserved!!)). I'm also a huge fan of roguelikes because I've always been more interested in learning about games than finishing them and I love the meta-progression. Roguelikes are amazing games for picking up just for a bit at short notice. They're designed around high quality gameplay and world-building and experience really matters. They aren't usually really about the story. Dead Cells for instance gives you bits of information like Bloodborne, but it's much more about the atmosphere and huge variety of areas you come across, all with their own styles and challenges. But I found Hades kind of disappointing because while you get tidbits when you die, you don't actually progress the main story unless you beat Hades. I tried for tens of hours to beat Hades enough times, but eventually I got bored of fighting all the way through only to die - again. In other Supergiant games, you progressed in the main story whether or not you won the encounter. Also, I didn't find the balance of relaxed Vs intense to be as good as their other games. I talked to everyone, sure, but that just bides time being trapped in the doldrums while you buy decorative accessories rather than build up long-term meta progression as you would normally in a roguelike. Hades is the only rogue like I've played where building skill doesn't really matter that much - it's just how long you can hold out against the onslaught. Hades plays like a better version of the room battles in Bastion which were my least favourite part of that game. I've put the game aside for now, because I don't want it to be the only Supergiant game I didn't finish, but right now - that's what it is.
Hades is definitely *not* "the roguelike for roguelike-haters". I thought the game was great, until I realized that when you (easily) die you must start basically the game over. I havent played it since
If my math is right it should be 1,417,176 possible weapon combos with 5 slots, 9 gods, 6 weapons and 4 forms of each weapon not including all the other things you can add
It was shot before he left (you can tell by the long hair, it's short now). I'm guessing if he shot other things that haven't been posted yet he'll show up again, but he's not filming anything new.
not at all, i really enjoy rogue likes but i'm still baffled by why people hyped up hades so much. It's a fairly standard game, nothing special, 2D on top of that.
You know, everyone talks about how hot everyone is in Hades, but I have unconventional taste and I don't actually find very many of them attractive. I wish that there was more diversity in body types, too. Not only for that reason, obviously.
Does anyone else find the character art kind of offputting? I've always associated that style where everyone's glistening and sneering for some reason with creepy tumblr/twitter fanartists.
Hades is good but it is not even close to my favorite roguelike, the combat doesn’t have as much depth when you consider that most of the common boons are just slightly delayed damage, or chained damage, which means the Daedalus hammer is the only boon that fundamentally changes the play style
