Hades Is The BEST Roguelike And Here's Why. Supergiant's new roguelike Hades has been touted as one of the best games of 2020. As a big fan of roguelikes, I find Hades to be one of, if not the very best roguelike I have ever played. From the tight gameplay, the engaging story, to the satisfying progression system, Hades is an amazing roguelike and you should absolutely play it.

Is it as replayable as something like Isaac or Spelunky? It’s rare to find a roguelite that doesn’t immediately get boring once you beat it a handful of times and upgrade everything. I want something like Slay the Spire where I can play for upwards of 1000 hours, not 50.

I'll consider it, especially since the other one did so well. Only thing is I've gotta really be inspired if I revisit a game (when I read the DD comics, I immediately knew I had to make a video on them). No promises, but it's definitely on my mind. In any case, I will 100% be buying and reviewing DD2 once it comes out

I personally find that video games have the potential to be a super unique form of storytelling since it's one of the only truly interactive mediums. Not as many games realize that potential as I'd like, but even the idea fascinates me.

Supergiant just can't make a bad game! Been in love with these devs since they first released Bastion, and to my mind they can just do no wrong! Even Pyre, which was certainly more of a mixed bag, was still fantastic.

@@Adze if you only play one other game by them, make it Bastion. More linear progression in terms of gameplay, but the music and story are perfection, and the narration is just...I mean that voice... 🤤

That’s a great video, thank you very much for making it. Although I have one complaint about it - you didn’t want to spoil any story content, but the footage is full with spoilers (which is very unfortunate, but I am still interested, how do we get to these story parts).
@Adze
@Adze 3 года назад
I don't think there was anything spoiled in my recording. This footage was done on a save file that had already completed all significant story content. There was only filler/fluff dialogue shown in this video and the NPCs just choose from a pool of several phrases when you talk to them. Unless you're talking about the bit of dialogue before the bosses? You'll get a little bit of that every time you encounter them (and the bosses for each zone are the same in every run). Is there anything in particular you think is a spoiler? Because I really don't think I showed anything essential or even impactful to the overall plot. I also didn't show the final boss, who's the only one I'd say can really be "spoiled"
@chojiackimichi
@chojiackimichi 3 года назад
@@Adze I was talking about the footage in the House of Hades, where I could see (SPOILER) standing to the left of Cerberus. As someone, who completed two runs, I now know one part of the ending (I think). People who haven't played the game won't notice that, but the ones who are in the middle of their walkthrough could notice that. If the video was intended for people, who haven't played, that's no problem then. I probably should've expected some form of spoilers in a video essay by a person, who got several hundred hours in the game.
@Adze
@Adze 3 года назад
Ah yeah, didn't think about that. Still, I do think you'd have to be pretty observant to notice that one (hell, I didn't catch it and I was combing through the video before uploading it looking for spoilers). Regardless, my bad. If it's any consolation, I do think the "how" is much more important than the "what" when it comes to the plot of Hades. So hopefully your experience shouldn't be worse off
@chojiackimichi
@chojiackimichi 3 года назад
@@Adze Nah, it's fine. I agree with you on "how" aspect. I think it's a way better attitude towards spoilers, that's much less stressful that way. So my experience wasn't spoiled (I am intrigued how events will turn out). Once again thank you for this essay, I am just beggining to appreciate the variety of Hades and rougelikes in general.

The only other roguelike I've played is Moonlighter, which is pretty damn good, and the shopkeeping part of the game is clever and fun. But I ultimately put it aside because the gameplay loop, while satisfying (and even a little addictive), just didn't have enough tying it to a narrative to make the time investment worth it. I imagine that would be a problem with most roguelikes; its a very specific and weird gamestyle to try and shoehorn a narrative to. But Hades, damn man... I really am spoiled now, because I suspect no other roguelikes will be able to do be this satisfying and fun to me. One thing that's standing out to me is how noticeable all the boon effects are, without making the fighting too easy.

I've never played or really been super interested in any kind of roguelikes. However, I'm a big fan of games like dark souls, and the genres seem very similar. Would you say someone who like From Software's games would like roguelikes?
@Adze
@Adze 3 года назад
"Roguelike" tends to describe the structure of a game rather than the actual gameplay, and a lot of roguelikes play very differently from one another. I mean, you have Dead Cells which is a 2D platformer, Enter the Gungeon which is a twin-stick bullet hell shooter, Slay the Spire which is a turn-based CCG, and Hades which is a hack n' slash. I will say that soulsborne games do share that "keep throwing yourself at the game until you master it" mentality that roguelikes have, so if you like Dark Souls, you likely at least have the personality type to be able to handle roguelikes. Hades specifically is much more high-octane than Dark Souls (I know DS can be very slow and methodical) and it's more about the self-contained runs and adapting to the things you pick up compared to something like DS where it's one long, continuous process.
@smartkaboose3806
@smartkaboose3806 3 года назад
@@Adze okay yeah that makes sense. I think the hack n slash in the gameplya is what makes me interested in it. I also can't stop hearing about Hades from EVERYONE haha. I think I'll be giving it a try! Thanks for your response :D

Yeah, that is a roguelike, and one I haven't actually gotten my hands on, though I've heard good things about it. IMO, Hades is a good intro for people who aren't really into RLs. It's engaging even if you aren't into the whole "bash your head against the wall until you break it" mentality

I think it's actually a pretty solid first roguelike. That persistent narrative and the way the different powers are unlocked make the game fairly newbie-friendly (which a lot of roguelikes really aren't)

While I like Hades, I think Dead Cells is better. Better difficulty handling is the name off the game for me. Hades restricts things at higher heat, while dead cells tradea difficulty for more content. And while yes, Hades does add more content at more heat, its underwhelming and tiny compared to dead cells.
