no joke, this scene is incredible live. It is genuinely pitch black in the theatre before those lamps start swinging in. And when the set moved apart??? Sensational. This whole show was a sensory explosion, loved every minute of it
Yep, this video doesn't fully capture the bright lights on the wall behind the separating set or the top of the set lifting up to reveal more of the wall and lights in the underworld.
This was insane live. The theatre was so dark then as it built up the lights got so bright and the vocals made it so chilling and stunning. I felt like I couldn’t t breathe bc of how amazing it was
I was lucky enough to see it at the Walter Kerr a few days ago from the third row. This scene, it made me burst into tears, and I wasn’t even expecting it. I’ve lost count at the number of shows I’ve seen on Broadway, and this sequence is right up there with the best of them. So powerful.
I started sobbing when the stage changed. And it’s not even a drastic change??? It just expands and some light shines through. But between the music and the lighting and the smoke and the way it all moved together- it felt like pure magic and i was just so overwhelmed by the beauty
Just watched this live a couple days ago and I have to agree, NOTHING prepares you for watching this live. It seems simple, but I have never had chills the way I had when watching this at the theatre. Remarkably done!
thats how i feel about eurydice singing the end on wait for me II. i'm a contralto & i dont have money for vocal training so i can only dream of hitting those notes lmao. my range is actually very similar to orpheus's
It was the best musical I’d ever seen live. I’m so blessed to have gone and seen the original Broadway cast before COVID shut everything down. If it ever comes to you, it’s worth every penny to see
I went with my school in February before the shut down and was only a few rows back it was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen the videos will never do it justice
I saw this on Broadway a few days ago with 2 of my friends. I was not that taken with the show. Then this number started and it all clicked for me/ I understood why Hadestown won so many awards. This song and staging is amazing. No words can explain it. I cry every time i hear it
Completely agree. I saw Hadestown on Broadway this afternoon and for a while I decided it was good but not phenomenal. Then this song started. It was one of those rare moments when I knew I would miss a moment as it was still happening. As soon as the song ended I wished I could experience it all over again. I watched this video and every other version on youtube trying to experience it again, but these videos are nothing compared to it live. I’ve already considered getting tickets for another show of it just so I can experience it again
@@daniellegershman9165 I literally did that last December; in large parts because of this song - I had seen it on a Wednesday with a friend, and we had good seats. I was blown away by the staging etc of this song. As my flight out of NYC was only Friday evening, and my friend already had to leave around 2, I was checking out the Friday matinee show *that evening* - as soon as I saw that there was a solitary seat left in the front row, I immediately hit BUY... ONE OF THE LAMPS WENT RIGHT OVER MY HEAD ...also, I got a drink during intermission, and during the intro to "Our Lady of the Underground", Persephone (Betty Who) got me stand up and clinked her flask against my cup, so that was fun
I watched Hadestown with my sister live this past weekend without ever listening to the soundtrack, nothing. This song and the end were the only times I cried but this song for me was so powerful. By far the best song performance in the show
Agreed !! My favorite song in the show without a doubt. It’s so thrilling & full of yearning. Brought ne to tears all 3 xs I was fortunate to see it on Broadway. Seeing the Tour in early 2023.
I genuinely broke down into tears seeing this live. The emotion, the longing, to reunite and bring him his love. And don't get me started on the ending. What a musical.
Of every musical I’ve seen, this is the greatest scene ever. Its like an experience in itself, and truly makes you feel like youre on the journey. If youre trying to decide whether or not to see this, please do, its sensational.
This is genuinely one of the most awe inspiring moments in any show. The lighting, the set change, the sheer emotion in all of it. I’ve never experienced something so amazing like this live, and probably will never top it again.
Like other people here, I saw this show 2 weeks ago and I honestly was not ready for this scene. The dark theatre with lights coming from nowhere on the stage sets the tone. The music starts picking up and you are sudenly desperate to find Eurydice that you can't comprehend what is happening, you just start feeling it. Man, hands down my favrotie show. Once the song was finished, I couldn't even applaud because that was so intense!
Oh my god, I won a lottery and got a center orchestra seat third row from the front and let me tell you to experience this part so close is AMAZING, the lights literally swing above that part of the audience, and you become lightly shrouded in the mist, and then all of the sudden Orpheus rises above the mist and above YOU, and the whole stage expands to the peripherals and you realize halfway that your viewing angle has basically doubled and you have this expansive and beautiful stage in front of you with these swinging lamps and phenomenal singing and incredible movement of the actors as well as the stage. It's just an overwhelmingly magnificent piece to experience so up close that you literally feel like you're venturing into the underworld along with Orpheus.
Just saw this on Broadway last week. It's astounding and inspiring to see this scene live. I paid $300 for 2 tickets in orchestra and the show was worth EVERY penny. The lamps actually flew above us and it really puts you in the scene.
Saw this on Broadway this weekend with Jordan Fisher. Like many others, I was absolutely SOBBING during this sequence. Quite possibly the best moment of theatre I've ever experienced. It was overwhelming in such the best way possible.
My boyfriend brought me to see Hadestown recently. He got us seats that were in the SECOND ROW from the stage. You better believe the beauty I saw during this scene was unimaginable. That was the scene that I most excited for, and he knew that, so he also got me an official Hadestown Wait For Me shirt from the merchandise stand. Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll ever experience something like that night again.
I saw this today in the CIBC theatre in Chicago. I was really high up, balcony seats at the very back of the theater, but I could see everything. When this song happened, I was crying. Tears streaming down my face, trying not to make noises out loud. It was beautiful. There were times you could only see Orpheus, surrounded by dark grey mist and the shadows of the others while the lamps swung back and forth behind him and the set split. Beautiful staging, lighting, set work, and directing.
I was sitting in the third or fourth row from the front when I saw this a little off center, and once of those incredible lamps went right over my head. The only other Broadway show I’ve ever seen was Great Comet and I had the same feeling of being there in the characters’ world. Rachel Chavkin is truly a beast at what she does.
the greatest live performance i've ever seen. had tears at the end. it's other-wordly good. these guys are so talented, if you can get a chance GO!!!!!!! AND DONT LOOOOOOOOOOOK BACK
I have been fortunate to have seen Hadestown three times on Broadway. THIS is my absolute favorite part of the show ! Great Job, Everyone ! And Reeve ! I hope to see him perform this at least once more on Broadway !! The BEST Orpheus, without a doubt ! I cannot WAIT to finalllllly see the Broadway Tour in a couple days !!
Saw this live last night. The stirring in my entire body as this song ramped up is quite literally unfathomable for me to describe. Hands down one of the best theatre experiences I've ever had.
So I just found this while looking for Hadestown content, specifically Hadestown content because my hyperfixation with the musical is returning since the show is coming back on September 2nd. This is absolutely amazing and I really wish you could've gotten the whole musical from that angle because it's perfect!
Honestly the most surreal thing to see live. It felt like my heart was going to reach out of my chest, that I’d exhale my soul out. It was. So so so so good
Dare I say it, this is one of the best songs of all time. It’s one of the only songs that can move me to tears just by listening. I’ve never seen it live, and can’t imagine how much of a wreck I’d be emotionally after seeing it.
I've never seen it, been wanting to since covid began, and I've listened to the soundtrack so many times, however I have a ticket for late March, so I'm hoping and praying that I am able to travel to the US in a couple of months!
This was the last show we saw before the shut down and the first show we saw when Broadway opened back up. We saw it last weekend and it was just as enjoyable as the first time. They actually made a few changes in the show.
I know I’m a year late, but when I saw this live, my friend audibly gasped and started shaking my arm and was like “THE STAGE IS MOVING! ITS MOVING!” you definitely notice it and it is amazing.
I saw this phenomenal musical 6 times on Broadway Once you see this entire scene it’s going to blow you away. Overall this is a Phenomenal musical to see on Broadway.
Saw hadestown live, and this scene was the most beautiful performance ive ever seen. The lights and setwork mixed with the incredible music made it a moment i'll never forget. If you get a chance, i'd 100% reccomend going to see hadestown live. this song especially will make you glad you saw it.
This song just hit different. The show was amazing! I could feel myself leaning toward the stage during this song and I got actual goosebumps. It was so amazing
watched this live for the first time tonight! we waited outside the theater when it was over and saw EVA FUCKING NOBLEZADA! she walked right past us it was so cool
I cried when I saw this scene live, some of the other comments have touched upon how overwhelming it is with the darkness of the theatre and the lights swinging, it’s truly amazing. Book tickets! 😂
I saw this live in London yesterday and honestly no words can describe the experience. It's immense. I was totally overwhelmed in the best possible way. Theatre at its best.
I saw live on my birthday and with the original cast. I can't begin to say how incredible this was. This is my favorite song. Specially when the room becomes pitch black, and the only thing that's light up is the lamps. My sister didn't want to see this but we made a deal that if i watched her favorite musical with her (which is SIX) she would watch my favorite which of course is hadestown. During intermission she pulled me aside and told me "ok you were right, this is amazing" 😁 i said "dont want to be that person, but i told you so"
I love Reeve Carney so much y'all don't even understand Also thank god they changed Orpheus' personality from the London one. Denim jacket Orpheus just isn't for me
its insane how incredible this show is both to me personally and to everyone who has experienced this... i coukd talk about this show forever. ive fallen in love with it
We saw the show in January 2022 and, on the way home, made plans to go again. (We're in NY State but about 6 hours from NYC.) It was so phenomenal and the stagecraft was amazing. The album is great, as is the book "Working on a Song" by Anaïs Mitchel if you want to know more about how it came to be. I knew and loved the music but seeing it live was an amazing experience. This show deserved to be filmed as a movie like Hamilton so everyone can experience it. It's that good. We're going back at the end of March and I can't wait.
I saw this at Segerstrom a few weeks ago. OMG watching it live is something else! phenomenal. So beautiful. How dare they make lamps just swinging so beautiful? Favorite song.
This musical triggered multiple ASMRs - especially this scene when the beat drops and the stage transforms. You MUST see this live and experience it at least once in your life.
i went to see this show at the Kennedy Center blindly. i had no idea what it was about, all i knew was that i liked Greek mythology. i like seeing things more than once so i can focus on different things, and i would definitely go see this again when it comes back near me. this is one of my favorite songs in the whole show, and the lamp show gave me some anxiety because i was worried they’d hit each other😂
I was very lucky to see this show at the Walter Kerr Theater a few hours afters we arrived in NY on June 5th. This single sequence is incredible and amazing to see it live.
i saw this last night at the Fox and it was genuinely the most amazing scene i’ve ever seen. between the lights, the vocals and the choreo, it’s phenomenal
I JUST BOUGHT TICKETS I CANT WAIT AHHHHHHH EDIT: It was PHEMONENAL!! Everyone (including me) was sobbing during wait for me. And when the walls open? holy shit It was so powerful. I saw the West end cast with Grace and Donàl :)
OMGGGG DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this song and your view point and live INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!I loved this musical. I seen it in Cleveland and hands down the best thing I have see in a long time. Sooo this prospective blow me away. Thanks
I went in to the show not knowing most of the music, and as we got toward intermission, I was thinking Orpheus seemed like a useless dingleberry. Then we got to this song and ohhhhh, now I get it.
Anaïs Mitchell conceived the original concept for the show while driving home from visiting her long distance partner. As she traversed the highway in the dead of night, the chorus of Wait for Me popped into her head as the highway lights passed by atmospherically and she thought of her lover. When she initially pitched the show after writing a few songs, she told the story to her choreographer friend and the lanterns were implemented to give the same visual punch as highway lights.
