Hair dye allergy is most commonly due to one of its ingredients, PPD (paraphenylene diamine). In this video we look at the clinical features of hair dye allergy, the ways to prevent it and most importantly, a list of PPD free hair dyes that are available all over the world, particularly in India, US, UK and Australia. Due to globalisation, most of these hair dyes can be purchased online from any country, wherever they are manufactured. The list of PPD free hair dyes was composed after consulting dermatologists from all over the world.

I have an EXTREME allergy to hair color. It causes my whole scalp and areas around the back of my neck, and forehead to swell and itch like crazy. It takes forever for it to work itself out. Last time the swelling was so bad it actually caused my ears to stick out because the areas around my ears just inflated so badly. The burning and the itching was absolutely horrible. I’ll never do it again.

Some Loreal Paris hair dyes are ppd and ammonia free, but they still have an ingredient called toluene-2-5-diamine which google says its similar to ppd but less common to cause allergies. For someone like me, who has suffered allergic reactions from ppd before, do you think its safe to use an alternative hair dye with toluene?
@DiscoverDermatology
@DiscoverDermatology 10 месяцев назад
Toluene diamine is certainly an option. About 50% of those allergic to PPD may be allergy to toluene too. I have just done a video on it and will post it on Friday, so look out for it! It mentions natural, synthetic and semi synthetic hair dyes.

My hair density was very lower as compared to last year due to smoothening. To regain back my hair I started using coccoonion anti hair fall kit by littleeextra and it proved effective in enhancing hair thickness and hair growth. I would suggest if you use it then always cleanse your hair by diluting shampoo with a little water before using as it works better in that way. Also when you apply oil then warm it a little and then apply. Apply it a minimum of once a week. Use wooden neem comb while brushing your hair and use scalp massager while hair cleansing to get remove pollution and dirt etc and it gives even improved result.

Quite a helpful video! I recently developed what I believe is a reaction to the PPD, a few days after dyeing my hair black I began to notice my scalp was really itchy but didn't really see it as a huge issue. Now my hair is thinning out a lot, I'm losing both my longer hairs and even some shorter ones. At first I thought the hair loss could be something genetic, but now it seems more likely that the hair dye has caused this issue. I'm just wondering if the hair I'm losing from this will grow back eventually.
@DiscoverDermatology
@DiscoverDermatology 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your kind words on the video. Hair loss can occur after dye reactions. It is useful to wait fir a few weeks as the hair tends to regrow with time once the inflammation subsides. If the hair loss is persistent, topical and oral minoxidil are helpful options. Here are a couple of videos on oral minoxidil ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JurJK_sSJAY.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1ZA4ybF3TWE.html

When you apply a patch test, do you mix with the developer, and how long do you leave it on?
@DiscoverDermatology
@DiscoverDermatology 5 месяцев назад
Its best to test each component separately.If there is no reaction, can be tested together. The use test suggests that we leave it for as long as the product is usually left on the skin. So leaving it for a day is fine to look for any reaction.

Thank you for spreading awareness. I hope we can take action to get it banned here in the US. I’ve been dying my hair black for years & slowly developed an allergy which became deadly. The last experience was absolutely terrifying and took weeks to recover. Since then it has ruined my self image. I’ve worn hats and wigs just to cover my roots. I hate going out bc I know my hair looks bad. I found Herb Speedy a while ago & it’s the only one I don’t react to but the color washes out so quickly😔 Madison Reed gave me a terrible rash. Thank you for the other recommendations I’ll try those next
@DiscoverDermatology
@DiscoverDermatology Год назад
I agree that a hair dye allergy can be a terrifying experience. Many get florid reactions that result in the eyes closing and the face swelling up beyond recognition. Hopefully, one of the alternatives may help but you need to remain cautious as your skin will be sensitive to the smallest concentration of PPD in any dye. All the best!

Is it possible that you don't get any allergic reaction to patch test but get while applying all over hair? I had such reaction with all dye.... I was using normal dyes since 20 years without any reaction, but now getting reaction with even cuti color and altrix hd...
@DiscoverDermatology

Yes, it is possible. We acquire allergies throughout life, so dyes that were ok for our skin can suddenly start causing reactions later. Patch testing may not predict all reactions either.

This has been very helpful! I have a been coloring my hair for over 30 years and now have developed a severe allergy to ppd. My hair is dark brown. My hairdresser has been trying a semi-perm and I take Benedryl before I go to her. My allergy is so severe it is air-born and my whole body is affected. The benedrl is not really helping anymore. The Hennas you talked about have too much red. But thank you for the other suggestions. I will try them. Is there a way to reduce the histamine in one’s system? I am assuming that this is the cause for the allergy. Thank you
@viper222
@viper222 Год назад
Hey there! To get dark brown hair with henna you have to use Indigo powder after the henna. This cancels out the red tones and you can achieve brown to black tones. Check out Henna Sooq on RU-vid she makes very in depth videos about how to get the hair colour you want with henna :)

Or you can mix henna and indigo together in one step as well, 70% indigo and 30% henna mix for dark brown. Only thing is that you have to mix them in separate bowls then mix together because henna takes longer to develop than indigo. Henna takes about 3 hours and indigo only 10-15 minutes. Hope that helps. Maybe its more work than a box dye but the allergic reactions arent worth it.

Great, informative vid Doc - I used Just for Men a few times no no issue at all ... and then suddenly I had a reaction to it. I did a bit of research and discovered that I shud use PPD free products - I have used Natur Vital & Naturtint - Natur Vital does not have PPDs but did NOT change the colour of my hair at all ....I used it a number of times and even emailed the manufacturer who suggested I leave the dye in for over an hour before washing my hair .... Didnt work, as soon as I washed my hair ALL the dye washes out - Do you know why PPD is used to produce these products ?
@DiscoverDermatology
@DiscoverDermatology Год назад
Thank you for the kind remark. The reason PPD is used is because it is the most powerful agent that imparts a dark colour to the hair. No other substance is able to replicate the colour it is able to produce. This is a great advantage to dye hair, but unfortunately it can also cause allergies in some.

@DiscoverDermatology
@DiscoverDermatology Год назад
It is difficult to predict what a person is allergic to without formal testing. Dermatologists use a patch test series that has all the specific ingredients that most have allergies to. In the UK we use the European standard series and we also have a hair series. It may be worthwhile getting one of these specific path tests done in a hospital.

As long as you follow the principle of how to use hair dyes safely (mentioned in the video) it can be applied in the tips of the hairs. Allergy can occur even if it is used sparingly. As long as the dye does not touch the scalp or skin, there will be not reaction. If there has been a reaction to any dye in the past, then suing the PPD free dyes may be a better option.

I'm highly allergic to hair dye and decided to go for highlights instead. Two days later and both my ears had swollen up, cracked and is constantly leaking fluid and blood. This fluid dries into a hard crust around the ears and my hair sticks to it like plaster. It itches, stings and burn like crazy. Steroid and antibiotic treatment by my doctor is required. It doesn't go away on it's own. I'm 55 years old and would like my gray hair seen to, but how? Please help. 😢

Trying the PPD free hair dyes mentioned in the video may be a first step. Try it on a small area and ensure that there is no reaction before using it more extensively in the hair.

@@DiscoverDermatology thank you very much for the advice... I'm still recovering from this horrible ordeal and I'm still way too scared to even think about hair dressers...

Hello. I use olia black hair dye. But it contains HPPS which is NIN-BIS.(2-HYDROXYETHYL -P-PHENYLENEDIAMINE SULFATE… is it same as PPD?
@DiscoverDermatology
@DiscoverDermatology Год назад
No, it is a sister molecule of PPD. Reports suggest that about 20% will react with hydroxyethyl paraphenylene diamine if you have a PPD allergy. The others could use it without any problem, so it may be worthwhile having a go.

Hi, Im afraid I do not speak Hindi fluently. RU-vid has a translate option that can translate the text in most languages as a text in the bottom of the screen. Maybe that is an option for you? Many thanks for looking at the video.

You are right, some can get allergies to hair dyes that contain PPD. Here is a video that suggests a few natural hair dyes that may be helpful in those with other allergies. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qGTVuUlQDJQ.html
