For reducing hair fall, eat a balanced diet rich in protein. Use a mild shampoo for your scalp. I changed my shampoo, hair conditioner and hair oil to litttllextra cocconniioon a year ago, and it has reduced my hair fall.
I've been vegan for 10 years now. I would say one of the most important aspects (for me) was to find a doctor that supports your vegan diet. For the first 5 years of my vegan journey, my family PCP tried to convince me to stop being vegan instead of checking my B12, Iron, and hormone levels. Now I have a doctor who understands this is important to me, and instead of blaming my diet we focus on nutrition education and making sure my blood work is where it should be for a young woman. If you have a lot of hair loss (and you have access to a doctor) I would recommend you get your B12, thyroid, and Iron/Ferritin levels checked. I also found adding healthy fats as Dr. Klaper states really helped. I add 2TBSP raw flax into my smoothie and it was a game-changer. Please ignore the "fat" fearmongers out there.
this was very helpful. My poor hair is all gone. I woke up this morning actuallly afraid for my hair. Ive been losing for a few years now but Ive been through some extra stress these past few months and ive been losing extra hair. So Im gonna start adding chia and see what happens, hopefully its a game changer for me too!
I don’t know what to do anymore! I’m on a vegan diet for a bit more than a year, and I lost hair density and my new hair growth is falling out very quickly! I have such good genetics for hair growth, nobody in my family has a history with baldness or hair loss, not the women and neither the man, both on my Dad’s side of the family or mom’s side of the family! I’ve always had very high density hair, and I would say my hair density fell to about 65% of what it use to be before! I’m not sure if I can blame the vegan diet here because even before being vegetarian or vegan I had problems with low folate since I left Brazil to live in Europe, with the change in nutrient naturally found in the food. I take Vitamin D3, vitamin C, B12, B complex for folate and iron but it is not helping! The hair loss stopped for a while when I started taking iron supplements but now it’s back again and even my new hair growth is falling out! I come from a culture where hair is so important! Being Brazilian, we spend more in hair care than in any other area of the beauty industry and that being said this hair loss is taking a heavy tool on my emotional health. Like I said, because of the good hair genetics I have and the very full head of hair I use to have (the type that hairdressers hate to style because it takes them forever) other people may not even notice the hair thinning but for me it’s is absolutely frightening. 😢
@@stephaniemoura9325 I am so sorry to hear that. I know firsthand how scary that is. Has your PCP (I believe they are called GP in the EU) checked your protein, B12, thyroid, D3, Iron, and Ferritin levels? If so, have you seen it? Low doesn't have to be in the red zone, if it is at the lower end, your body will prioritize your major organs and your hair will not get the nutrients it needs. However, if everything is/was normal, can your GP refer you to an endocrinologist and dermatologist so they can do additional labs/tests? There are so many reasons for hair loss it is best to get to the root cause.
I lost a ton of my hair after going plant based. My dermatologist said it was telogen effluvium. Brought on by the plant based diet because it was a shock to my system. This is the same thing that can happen when you have something traumatic happen such as losing a spouse. The good news is that it grows back. But oh so slowly.
The issue maybe protein. We need 0,8 grams of protein per kilo of healthy body weight (or 0,8 x 55kg = 44 grams of protein per day) Sometimes, in a plant based diet we forget or don’t focus on that. In a meat diet this is automatic. In a WFPB diet you need to pay attention not to stay below this mark. After a year of research and hair loss, my hair loss completely stopped. And if I start a diet to lose weight I have to be extra careful with my amount of protein intake. Tofu and lentils to the rescue!!!
I eat so much tofu, I use soy protein powder, I take vitamin D3, I eat healthy fats, I take vitamin C, B12 of course, complex B because I’ve had problems with folate before and another vitamin B, I take iron supplements and try to eat açai when I can find good quality one where I live, and like I said in another comment (I’ll paste it below) nothing seems to resolve it. I love being vegan and I just wish this would stop. I started being vegan to help my gut and stayed for the ethical reasons. I don’t know what to do anymore! @@stephaniemoura9325 maybe try to eat a balanced diet with some meat... eggs and some fish .... lamb ... beef... you already tried the vegan diet... now try a balanced diet and i hope you can get strong hair .... protein from plants and veggies isnt enough for our boddies.... just try the balanced diet with meat at least a couple of months and see if u feel better.... im so sorry for your hairloss... :( i hope this helps sister... dont be sad.. dont be stress out.. the stress also contributes to the hairloss... be calm and reconsider your diet choices please...
I am so happy to see this video!! You have no idea. I have been Whole Food Plant Based for 6 years and vegan for 11 years. This past year -- I was thinking it was due to stress -- my hair started falling out a lot and leaving some patches of exposed scalp on my head. I am resisting using Minoxidil or Keranique because it has bad side effects. I started using Rosemary oil and it helps a bit but I never thought about increased fats. I have been pretty strict with fats -- don't cook with oil or have dressings, etc. So now I'll go back to avocado and increase my seeds like Flax. Actually I used to use Flax daily and switched to Chia since I am worried about my bones and was told there's more calcium in Chia. But that's sort of when my hair started falling out too. (Honestly - you can't win!) Thanks for the tips. Its so difficult for women with hair loss. PS -I take Vitamin D3 daily and it doesn't prevent it.
Not a vegan but I got a autoimmune condition..its really important to choose organic if you care about health, cleanse your fruits, and vegetables from pollution from air, soil with vingegar,or peel them, focus on the protein sources, get omega 3(algue supplements)and enough sun..get good sleep, avoid stress, get enough sunlight morning sun is best..
i've heard there are cases in medical history where older men with late stage balding had hair regrowth and balding reversal due to other illnesses and the medications/treatments of them. i'd like to see a collection of these rare occasions where late stage norwood 7 balding reversed to a norwood 2 or 3. i spent years as a vegan and my hair had no issues at all. when i began eating meat and dairy and bread and sugar, within 18 months my hair started falling out. when i went back to beans and rice and corn and sweet potatoes and fruits and vegetables, my hairline filled back in and my hair got thicker. i think male pattern baldness is diet related because the men in my family are mostly bald on both sides except me and a couple other people. my hair started to thin around age 26 but now i am almost 40 and have not lost much in the last decade, which i attribute to my diet and jogging routine. i probably won't ever eat meat or dairy again, as long as i have my hair.
I think it has to do with insulin resistance. I had cancer two years ago and when I went on this type of diet I noticed my hair filling in.. when I went low carb carnivore recently I noticed it grew back even more like to completely normal but the drawback of this diet is that I was always so hungry. I’m back on Whole Foods plant based and I’m loving it and my hair is doing really good

Thank you, I have seen an increase in hair loss for the last 3yrs that I have been on a vegan diet, but everytime I get my thyroid checked the numbers come in within range or slightly off but not enough for doctors to address meanwhile it is coming out so bad my hair thickness has reduced by half. So, again thank you for the information I will give this a try.
@@valeryyie It is definitely hard not to stress about it. I ended up find out that I have Hashimoto Thyroiditis so I am trying to get my antibody markers down for that. Still have the hair loss. I didn't see Dr Klapper's response so I will probably put my question on the other platform. I wish I had answers for you but I am still searching for them.
my experience is not enough protein and fatty acid been vegan 8 years , i noticed whenever i went raw vegan in the summer my hair would shed like crazy as soon as i added beans lentils tofu nuts seeds back ...bam !!!!hair loss stops
@Peter Rabbit honestly according to veganhealth dot org id be deficient in practically every nutrients lol i cant eat like that, but after researching nutrition and going through depression over it my brain has led me to beleive that nutrition science and rdi/rda's are completely false, to the point of terrorism imo, so as some1 who was obsessed i am now a disbeleiver, for my true healths sake , just had beer and chocolate for breakfast and tbh im feelin pretty dam good compared to alot of other people in the world haha :)
@Peter Rabbit im not affraid, i tried going sober for a year and i was bedridden the whole time with depression, i will be trying to go sober again, but if it doesnt work honestly i dont care too much, we all have to die sadly, might aswel feel good and have a bit of enjoyment, especially after the past and the future lol
@@Eye4eye007 it's a scam if ur vegan there's no food or supplement with d3 d2 yes but not good absorbable, do can be only made in cholesterol and tissue in either humans when going outside or by animals
@@Eye4eye007 there is no such things as plant-based d3, d2 yes but doesn't get converted well in d3. In order for something to have D3 that things must contain cholesterol like humans when they are outside or animals
I've been vegan for 5 years, never lost any hair, until I started losing weight this year. Then my hair fell off and I'm left with half of what I used to have... I'm really sad about it. Seems like the only way to get it back is to start eating more fat but then I'll also gain weight. So it seems that I'll have to choose between hair and body. Either that, or I just lost weight too fast. I think I did, I ate 1500 calories per day roughly and my TDEE is probably 2100-2200 or so
Fat consumed does not translate directly into fat on your body. Fat contains essential nutrients (essential in this context means ones that your body cannot make on its own) with implications far beyond hair, including brain function, cholesterol mediation, blood pressure equalizing, and energy harnessing. Some of the vitamins we know are important, like D, E, and A cannot be absorbed without adequate fat intake, because they are fat soluble. When people eat the muscles of animals, they have an understanding that the body breaks this down and uses the components to make things other than muscle (otherwise the average American would look like a bodybuilder), but we have trouble grasping the same for fat. Not all fats are created equally, but people should by no means try to eliminate them from their diet.
sister if you gain weight... you can go to the gym.. or do some light excercise in ur home... its more healthy than just trying to lose weight in just diet
@@darkmistico it was actually caused by deficiencies! I had a b12 and iron deficiency after weight loss and from not supplementing enough and being on bc pills
There was no doubt my hair thinned out within a couple of months of eating plant based. Everything seems to have balanced out but it isn’t anywhere near as much hair as I had before. I am told I look like I have a “normal” amount of hair now so it doesn’t bother me.
My mother lost a lot of hair post menopause and she ate the standard American Diet. I am 71, and have lost some of my hair, not nearly as much as my mother. I take gelatin as my nails were splitting and also take zinc as well as biotin and B6 and B12. I use Morton’s LITE Salt and it is IODIZED. With doing these things, my hair loss has stopped as noted that my leg hair has begun growing again as well as my pubic hair but I’ve also begun taking Estrodial vaginally1 gram once a week. Since the Estrodial, I’m sleeping better and my crepey skin is better on my arms and legs. Atrophy of vaginal tissue is better though sex is still somewhat painful. I am still taking Estroven as since taking Estrodial some hot flashes have returned though not severely so. Still eating soy beans and tofu though not as much as it is fattening to me. Overall feeling better though sleep remains an issue for me. My mother and sister had sleep deprivation issues also and they were definitely not Vegan. They were approximately my same height but both weighed about 245 lbs. when both got breast cancer. My sister’s metastasized to bone, lung and brain and liver. Horrific death. My mother died in a coma. I was up to 200 lbs. but now weigh 120 lbs. I don’t have high BP, cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, have recovered from gouty arthritis with the Vegan diet. My mother had gout. My father died of Alzheimer’s disease. He had it from age 60. I am 71 and am free if that also. The Vegan diet is a great blessing. I rarely even get a cold, am over it in a few days if I even get one. 2 colds in 10 years! I used to have 4 colds per year as well as asthma! No asthma either.
Dr. Klaper, what about the goitergenic effects of undercooked green and cruciferous vegetables? Isn't one of the effects of goitergens hair loss due to thyroid imbalance? And can't those disruptive effects be remedied by steaming those vegetables tender rather than drinking them raw in smoothies?
Hey doctor .. i became vegan 31 days ago and yes my hair was falling out like bats flying out of cave . But what i noticed .. when i ate soya .. in moderate amounts it stopped . I was and still am a gym rat and i was encouraged to drink these protien whey crap drinks that did absolutely nothing for me .. waste of good money. But the link i am trying to make is .. if men eat soya and these estrogen foods moderately does it balance off out or hormones . And also doctor in other readings are we both vegan and non vegans lacking good sulphur in our diets which promote healthy skin hair nails ? I was told we have to make garlic onions and ginger staples in our diet now .. whats your take on this ... thanks and regards ainsley ameerali.. trinidad
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism back when I was a teen in the 90’s. I used to take meds for it, but quit them around the same time I became vegan 15 years ago (unlike my older non vegan sister btw..) I have *never* had a problem with my hair - in fact people would be jealous of how thick it is. And I’m not a “health nut”, more aware now, eating mostly WFPB. I’m 40+ now and I’ve lost a little hair in the temple area, that classic M shaped pattern. Sure, it bothers me, but I should be grateful, wether it’s “good genes” or what I’m *not* eating (or drinking!), who knows! But from my own experience and other vegans I know - it is not because you’re vegan. Might be a transitioning thing for some, and it will grow back, but don’t be worried, listen to Doc K! 😎
I don't know instagram so ill try asking my question here. What nutritional foods will help my nails that have developed ridges and now they split, break, chip as the ridges get to the tip of my nails...which is ongping!
Guys are no different from women on this. If the cause of your hair loss is lower amount of protein intake due to WFPB diet, it will be the same solution for both sexes. Up your protein !
You can’t treat male pattern baldness with diet. Only hairloss caused by dietary deficiency will be reversed by an improved diet. Or if you have hairloss caused by diabetes or thyroid issues, that can also be treated with diet.
sacrificing our hair for the cause, im going to choose to not believe it, still nothing on the vegans 50 years ago who sacrificed b12 deficiency for the animals without even knowing it, i think about it all the time, those people should be respected as much as war veterans imo
@Peter Rabbit id hope so, but tbh i did notice my hair is thinner near the roots than the old growth, i havnt cut my hair for 4 years and ive been vegan for 6 and ive started going grey early but i dunno, i smoked weed all day everyday mixed with tobacco since i was 14 lol recently cut out the tobacco but took up drinking again :p light beers ofcourse lol
@@VeganChiefWarrior My NON Vegan sister used to have so much hair but over time lost so much hair and now I have more hair than her and I'm regan. It might just be genetic.
