Haley Strategic MP2 vs. ESSTAC Magazine Inserts

Both AMAZING products. In short, the MP2 system is more uniform and consistent. However, they offer a little less retention and cost nearly double what the ESSTAC 5.56 kydex inserts cost. It's important to note, that the MP2 are the only ones that will work for larger magazines. The ESSTAC only work with 5.56 pouches.

Thanks for the awesome non bias review guys! This really helps the viewer. 1: We made them have slightly less tension in order to fit more pouches out there plus we find its very hard to reload with some of the higher tension systems. 2: As a retention note: They meet MIL Airborne requirements as they have been Free Fall tested with and without bungee's and approved by specific units. 3: the reason the mags come out of the middle is because you have items in the GP pouches creating more tension because its pulling the seams of the mag pouch tighter. give it a shot with Handgun mags or tools inserted and see if that create better force vectors. basically a full load-out is how we designed and tested when considering the tension. Thanks again!

HaleyStrategic Thank you for the comment. If anything, I was really hard on the MP2s. I'm that way on all Haley Strategic products. Why? Well...first, it's an effort to avoid favoritism. It's a well known fact, that I love your products. Second, Haley Strategic products simply raise the bar and should be held to a higher standard! I did completely fail to mention, in the video, that the MP2 can accept other caliber magazines. Where as, the ESSTAC cannot. As I've used them, in rain, cold, hot and other various conditions, the velcro has actually come off the ESSTAC units. Which moderately decreases their ability to stay in place within the D3CR pouch. The MP2 doesn't have this issue. Velcro is a simple enough fix though. As I said in the video, the center mags fell out in both "shake tests" because of my grip strength increasing tension on the pouches nearest the grip. I'm glad you noticed that also and I feel it's pretty obvious to any discerning customer.

You're a good dude Mr. Haley. Deserving of your reputation in the industry. Wow! Now I sound like a fanboy. But I'm ok with it in this instance.

I would also like to mention that in a real mag the magnets will help hold tighter with the brass/lead.

I’m not sure about the MP2s, but the esstac will expand and lose retention in a hot car. So if you run a trunk rig, be aware. You can reform them, and regain grip with a lighter, though.

Well if u want even more grip to fully open 556 mag pouches (and some 762 mags can also be fitted just fine) you should look at Esstac short kywi pouches. They are even more snag than the long ones but you also got a lot more space to grip on (if using normal 30 round pmags for example). I personaly run couple pmags on my cummer bunds upside down in short kywis because of their very tight hold. And doesnt have any problems to do quick mag changes (with dump pouch) with them. If you are running very light weight rig (like in the video) those shorty ones need sharp flick to get mags out without pulling your chestrig only higher, but in platecarrier and heavier chestrig setups they will work very good imo. One very important thing to notice is that those kywi inserst are made to be used with original kywi pouches which are measured very precisely. So with other pouches those inserts does not fit as good as they are designed to fit since the pouch inside diameter can vary a little between different manufacturers. Also kywi inserts r designed to stay in place with that velcro in kydex inserts which stick to the kywi pouch velcro inside. So it is basicly impossible to remove those inserts from the pouch accidentaly. I can admit that i dont have any experience with HaleyStrategic mag pouch inserts but with kywis i have and i have no any bad to say about those. One thing i noticed is that haley ones have little lip so mags will snap sligthly in the place when kywis can be used almost silently if u do it with much less force than the guy on video.

wish I would have seen this before ordering a bunch of MP2's. I'm excited about the MP2's but the price is kind of a lot especially when ordering a lot of them. Thanks for showing other options.

The retention is plenty, what you're really choosing is inject molding vs. 5 dollar Kydex + heat gun, because that's exactly what those others are.
@deesminutemansupplywarhamm6078
But, will the kywis hold AK mags?

Do you think ESSTAC inserts would go integrate well with a Spiritus micro?
@toddmccravey3011
@toddmccravey3011 4 года назад
I ran kywi's with a micro and they had too much retention. I switch to the Harley but you could probably loosen then up with heat and run them just fine

Will the MP2 inserts work in the double mag expansion system pouches as well?

Tbh I think the kywis have too much retention I’ve taken a heat gun to all of mine to loosen them

Is the shake test a good test? Because they have drain plugs and wouldn't you want drain plugs to anchor into the vest so the test is pointless ?
@anthonyhyte9198
@anthonyhyte9198 4 года назад
The Airsoft mags he used are pointless to use for a shake test-(unless he is aiming this video at airsofters) because the airsoft mags are too light for testing. Loaded 30 round 5.56 mags should have been used, which are obviously much heavier, and why the ESSTAC Kydex ones are tighter. He should have been wearing his rig when testing, because the dynamics of removing and inserting mags would change drastically when it is worn vice flapping around.

spinxtercell Thank you. I'm still debating if I like the banner on the bench. I will probably do that format for awhile. At least until my new shop is built and this one is renovated. Then it will be a studio.

Esstac's KYWI's are HAND MADE, which is why they are all not exactly the same. Ignoring the startup costs of a mold, they are more expensive to make then injection molding. I was pretty bummed out to see a big name like Haley Strategic knocking off a small veteran owned business like esstac. But Haley is popular, so he will get a pass. Oh well.

Haley wasnt always big. He is also a veteran. Rant = redundant. Haley did what esstac did but better dont get salty.

@Meecro Chip tbh my kit consists of a AVS and AVS 1000 pack combo with a 3 strand cummerbund now and days since I am in an environment where I would prefer to have ballistic plates with soft armor over mobility.

I'm considering one or the other for my Condor triple (six) open top magazine pouch. Do you think either one of the inserts are compatible? Also, if I want to go cheaper, where can I get the ESSTAC inserts? Thanks.
@DemoDad101
@DemoDad101 9 лет назад
Ben Dover The Esstac would be a great choice. You can get them from www.skdtac.com. I probably wouldn't invest in the MP2s for Condor level gear. They will both work though.

Alright thanks. I like Haley's stuff but idk if it would be worth it. I'll look into the Esstac's.

what esstac insert would be best used for airsoft purposes? the 20round or 30round? Its for Hexmag and PTS epms. Thanks

I'd go with 30round, as most mag pouches come in that size.
