When they have to destroy a car in a movie, the property master will meticulously remove everything on the car that is of value but cannot be seen on camera, so we're talking about seatbelt tensioners, trim, radios and speakers, power window motors, everything like that. It is all sold as spare parts to offset the cost of the vehicle, and the heavily stripped down vehicle is crashed in the stunt sequences.. then any thing that wasn't damaged in the crash is further stripped and sold off and whatever wreckage is left is sold off as scrap metal. The whole process is fairly cost effective.

I’m still convinced that this whole movie was just one big stunt by the cast and crew to see how much money you can make while doing as little as possible. Bruce Willis seeing how little someone can act while staring in a major motion picture. The folies seeing how many looney tunes sound effects can be put in a major motion picture. The cinematographer seeing just how much one can shake the camera during the production of a major motion picture. The director seeing just how long one can sleep while directing a major motion picture. This wasn’t an action flic. This was borderline experimental.

another thing 1 & 3 has is "playing the authorities" - where the police's/fbi's response to the red herrings helps the villains plan. 2 sucks but the location & sense of peril are solid (up until the ridiculous ejection seat scene).

Mike, the most implausible thing about Die Hard 2 was that an entire terrorist mission was planned months in advance with the assumption that there would be a snowstorm on the east coast so heavy that it closed down all the airports on the east coast...

Fun fact: they didn’t tell mike and jay exactly when Beverly Hills cop II would start playing so that they’d be able to capture genuine looks of shock

The Die Hard franchise really is an exercise in escalation. Die Hard in a building, then an airport, then a city, then a coast, then a country. Totally nailed that aspect. I actually really enjoyed the 4th one. The 5th one is unquestionably bad, though.

What is ridiculous is that Bruce Willis is not even that old. He was 58 in 2013, the year DH 5 came out. He's roughly the same age as Mel Gibson, where as Arnold and Sly are about 9 years older than both of them. The old guy action movie trope is really tiresome and forceful.

"You know what, here's the thing about Die Hard 4. Die Hard one, the original, John McClane was just this normal guy. You know, he's just a normal New York City cop, who gets his feet cut, and gets beat up. But he's an everyday guy. In Die Hard 4, he is jumping a motorcycle into a helicopter. In air. You know? He's invincible. It just sort of lost what Die Hard was. It's not Terminator." - Michael Scott

@BretGammons

The problem with the everyman aspect is that once you've foiled three terrorist plots pretty much by yourself, you're no longer a normal guy-hence the action hero upgrade in #4. It would be more ridiculous than anything in the actual sequels if they tried to keep McClane the same guy he was in the original Die Hard. You can have an everyman, or you can have John McClane. You have to choose.

*Die Hard*: Great movie *Die Hard 2*: Not quite as good, but still pretty entertaining. *Die Hard 3*: Thought the ending should have been simplified. Just catch the bad guy. Having them fake blowing up the gold then go catching them just dragged it on. But I like the whole interaction in that movie between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, and overall, it kept me entertained. *Die Hard 4*: Uhhhh, I saw it, but I don't remember the first 4/5ths of the movie, which probably isn't good sign. All I remember is that Bruce Willis fights an F35, like it's a video game or something. Wildly jump the shark unrealistic. And for anyone that doesn't know, Harriers and F35s only have that hover capability for takeoff and landing. They aren't fucking helicopters. If you tried using them as floating attack platforms, you would fucking crash and die. *Die Hard 5*: I wish I didn't remember five fifths of this movie. Just awful. The action is so unrealistic, it destroys any tension. It really just made the whole movie boring.
