Mike and Jay give Mr. Plinkett some chores to do while they discuss the lost in space adventure film Gravity starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as well as the horror flop Carrie.
I agree with the "it would be better with unknown actors" bit. For me, Gravity wasn't about astronauts. It was about Bullock and Clooney in astronaut suits.
@@michaelccozens So they should just release a tech demo showing off new special effects into theaters? Somehow I don't think that would bring in more people.
My cousin would sit in front of a candle and wait for it to move, and then say he was trying to make it do that, he also used to watch a lot of Avatar:The Last Airbender...xD
+tknick90 Which is curious, because Sam in Moon spends much more time in others company, than Sandra does in this film. I think the difference is that the characters in Moon don't like eachother that much. And they're not the ever optimistic, selfless, charming, handsome, and all knowing George Clooney. You know; NOT Jesus. *Spoilers* Sam 1 thinks Sam 2 is a hot-headed, impatient and irrational bufoon. Sam 2 thinks Sam 1 is a spineless hermit. Sam 2 doesn't trust GERTY very much. The only good relation is that between Sam 1 and GERTY, although it's clear Sam 1 REALLY needs a friend, and GERTY may not have Sam's best interest at heart (turns out he does, though.) Over the course of the film, these characters go from tolerating eachother, to becoming friends. Or atleast, developing a great deal of respect for eachother. Gravity is too "Nothing is impossible" and "Follow your dreams" to capture the feeling you described. Moon is all about pragmatism. Some things are impossible. Follow your dreams, but know when to let them go. Gravity is: "Life is awesome, you just need to discover it!" Moon is: "Life just really fucking sucks for some people!"
+SilverSpade92 The scene where Sam 1 drives the rover past the communication jammers and contacts his daughter was what really disturbed and saddened me. Sam's loneliness over being away from his family was bolstered by the realization that he isn't the same Sam Bell that belongs to that family. The camera pans around to then show the earth; and the audience is left to contemplate just how many dimensions and existential levels of loneliness and isolation Sam was experiencing. The scene I referenced: /watch?v=U4DQ1_PCBs0
The problem with Hollywood working with CGI is that they don't focus on plot or characters, they focus more on technology and proudly proclaim to the world, "Look what we can do!" That's great when the movie first comes out but then it's obsolete in a year or two. I'd rather just see a good story!
So rarely do I love a book and a film in equal measure, but Carrie is one of those situations. It's surprising that Carrie was the first novel Stephen King ever got published, because it's as sickly hilarious and unsettling as anything he's written since, and the climactic prom scene in DePalma's film is one of the tensest scenes I've ever watched, and I don't think anyone has topped it except for perhaps DePalma himself with The Untouchables train station scene. Those two are neck and neck for me.
The fire extinguisher thing? Done in the 1950s movie, Destination Moon, only it was used far more believably for a short-range recapture of an untethered crew member (~50m).
I always remembered the Columbia instead of the Challenger because it was such a small detail that made all the difference. I hope these first generations of Astronauts and Cosmonauts will never be forgotten.
Technically this movie was great, but I agree on the plot. It seemed like one of those rube-golberg machine plots that relies on a seemingly endless and increasingly unlikely series of catastrophes to keep going. When you stack the odds so heavily against a character, yet still have them prevail, it starts to lose it's believability.
Watching Gravity in IMAX 3D was breathtaking. One of the few instances where 3D and a large screen really add something to your movie experience. Usually it just sucks.
When he said that “it’ll keep you in your seat..... for the entire movie”, I was reminded that, despite having to pee incredibly badly, the movie was too intense and held my intention such where I simply accepted the fact that I may now die of kidney failure of some sort in the future.
Seems that Carrie would be an easy remake with all the stories you hear about bullying and cyber bullies. There are more ways to be ostracized now then ever.
This is actually a really good idea! That means the next reboot in 5 yrs will also take place only in the shower and the prom, where the internet is not a thing.
your point about carrie being a soft r got me thinking about why i believe the bbfc (british mpaa) is better. our pg13 is 12, r is 18, but then we have a middle 15+ rating which is where all the "hard 13s" and "soft Rs" go
Binarygod, we do, but not quite as broken as mpaa. The whole 2 guys touching butts = r thing has never been annissue here, and i know a lot of people from uk and canada who really scratch their heads at that one. The pg15 gets you around the "1 fuck" rule too, allows you a couple, and a single "cunt" if you're feeling cheeky
Andrew Marshall It's pretty much the same in Germany, except we have 16 instead of 15... and nobody cares about cursing, so you can pretty much say whatever the fuck you want in a movie, and as long as there's no other questionable content in it, you'll get away with a 0 ('G') rating. Honestly, I think the MPAA's attitude towards cursing is absolutely ridiculous.
Gentleman in the Radiator I've seen that before when i could only find a german copy of run, lola, run (On that topic, yall make some strange movies over there man)
Something that bugged me about Gravity - the part where George Clooney is towing Sandra Bullock. He goes forward, the tether tightens and it yanks at both of them, then they start over. I was like, okay, that makes sense, but why are you doing it that way? They could have just gone face to face, with her hugging him. She moves down a little so he can see, and then he uses the pack to propel them. I mean, there would be several ways of doing it to make them a single unit and not two separate objects connected by a tether. She could have just wrapped herself around his legs. She could have held onto his hips from behind. It would have made the trip a lot faster and saved them a ton of fuel, which they ultimately ran out of!
I actually loved the ending to Gravity because when she reaches the beach and she touches the soil for the for time it feels so weird. for the first time in the entire movie she's not floating around. she's stuck to the earth. I can almost physically feel the sensation of touching gravity in a long time from the camera work with it in a low angle facing up. it was extremely satisfying and it made the move for me. I agree on the Sandra Bullock part tho, they should've chosen someone else...
Kick Ass girl was really miscast in Carrie. She's got that round cute face button nose and she really didnt have anything creepy about her at all. Sissy Spacek wasnt ugly but she had the crazy eyes and sort of a ghoulish look to her. Also I cant really fucking buy that Chloe Grace whatever couldnt get a date I mean come on
AKN Concept yeah its just not believable at all you cant cast a super cute actress and call her ugly. Then the only thing you do to alter her appearance is scruff up her hair and have her not wear makeup
Yeah, that’s the problem at the core of the movie. Carrie is just way too fucking hot for anyone to really suspend their disbelief and buy into into her outcast loser storyline. Anyone that has been to high school knows it doesn’t work that way😆
Wow. Gravity came out in 2013?! In my mind i still was like: "If i got time i need to see that new Sandra-Bullock-Movie that came out recently." I need to quit work, i guess. You dont search for another VHS-repair-guy, by chance? I mean i got 0 qualifications to repair VHS-devices but it seems to me that that would be fine.
I listened to these guys talked about space and realized I was watching Fry and Bender have a drunken chat... and I had happiness in my heart for those few moments. lol
Hmm the back of the repair shop looks oddly similar to the place Mike and Jay ducked into while trying to hide from Plinkett and had Battleship downloaded into their brains
I felt the ending of Gravity was trying to symbolize the struggle to conquer new "realms", as if trying to symbolize evolution of life emerging from one stage to another to another
Dammit guys, I was expecting the screamer the whole review, and you still got me at the end. I blame Plinkett for lulling me into a false sense of security.
thought I'd share this because it's somewhat relevant; my dad saw the original Carrie when it came out up in London, and apparrently when the part at the end (spoilers I guess) where the hand breaks upward through the ground occured, the whole theater gasped in shock apart from dad who as so surprised he bellowed "FUCKING CHRIST" and made the whole place break down laughing; he'd like that I shared that xD
I didn't think Gravity was the greatest movie, and this review is 4.5 years old but I have to disagree with Jay on the ending. When Sandra Bullock climbs out of the water and finally stands upright without any assistance or holding on to anything I finally got the 'gravity' of the title. You could actually feel the sensation of gravity on Earth in that last moment and I thought that was really impressive.
factotum I kind of agree, I just wish they didn’t do the whole drowning part. As impressive as it was it was unnecessary and just felt kinda silly. If they had just had her splash down and get out it would have been better.
at 18 minutes you're wishing they had shown how some little thing could cause catastrophic disasters, it reminded me of a scene in mission to mars after they spend all that time repairing the holes from the micrometeorites and everyone thinks its all okay then the camera sort of holds back until the space ship has cleared and the sound is all spooky and you see all the holes in the fuel tanks.
My opinion on Gravity is that it's a beautifully shot film with some amazing special effects and CGI work, but there is no reason to care for the characters. When I got done watching the movie, I pretty much said, "Well, it'd make for an awesome amusement park ride!". Gravity is pretty much "Every Phobia Ever - The Movie".
Don't forget that you can waltz from the ISS to Tiangong only using your spacesuit's power, even though they are on different orbital inclinations and different altitudes...
I agree, Chloe Grace Moretz is way too pretty to ever be bullied like that. Maybe if she stank. Really smelled unbearably bad, then just maybe she might get picked on. But that is the only way. Not that Sissy Spacek isn't pretty, but there is something haunting and unusual about her. She was much more believable as the underdog.
I remember the absolute uproar Gravity caused in my hometown, because Sandra Bullock's character says she's from there in the trailer. People were talking about it for WEEKS.
Not only was Challenger seen live by millions, it was recorded in high detail by lots of cameras. You could see the explosion. With Columbia, you couldn’t see anything really. Sure some observers say streaks or flashes, it was not nearly as dramatic. Also, I think age plays a role. For those born between 1968-1982, Challenger would have happened in school but Columbia in adulthood. Also, 9/11 had recently happened which was a much bigger shock. Still, it is interesting how Columbia has receded from memory so rapidly.
Firefly followed suit of Babylon 5 with the no sound in space thing (or at least B5 did that for the first season, I think they changed it up later on), and it works there too. It's a challenge for directors to make the footage compelling while being robbed of most sound effects in the actiony scenes. It can work or it can fail, but it's not a detriment unless it's in the hands of an unskilled filmmaker. it worked for JMS and Joss Whedon.
Finally someone who shares my same opinion on Gravity. Was it a hell of a ride? Yes. Fun movie? You betcha. But, oh God, the dialogue. I kept waiting for Sandra Bullock to scream "I'M AAAACCTTTIIIINNNGGGG!!" *sob*sob
As a person from the UK, I can indeed confirm that 'Bollocks' means 'balls'. We also call them 'Knackers'. Sandra Knackers is a famous actress over here.
