Halloween III: Season of the Witch is criminally underrated. The soundtrack is top notch, and the story is very interesting. If you watch it as a standalone film from the other films you'll enjoy it more. Believe me.
+Wglass90 Glad to see I'm not the only one who loves this Halloween treasure. As for "no Michael Myers" forgetboutit.... this is a stand alone classic. EVERYTHING about this film is amazing
+Wglass90 LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie!! So moody and creepy and this music is fantastic! I'm planning to buy the first three movies on Blu-ray in time for this Halloween but 3 is the priority! Plus this part makes me cry laughing every time... "Hey Cochran, F--- YOU!" LOL Anyway the music in III is more trance-like, reminds me of Looker or something, love the repetitions, love the layers of ostinato that phase in and out with each other...
+Wglass90 When I was a kid I hated the movie for the same reason as everyone else, but as I got older this is one of my favorite horror movies. Like you said man, watch it as a standalone.
I agree. Nothing is more cold, inhuman and ominous than some otherworldly synths, and few matched the greatness of John Carpenter's scores at perfectly capturing the mood. Orchestral horror music is so forgettable to me, and so overused in modern films. There's nothing scary about a score that sounds like classical music.
No this movie is trash Why out of nowhere people are acting like is a good movie? It was trash in 1982. It was hated by critics and the average viewer And still trash today The only good redeemable thing about this abomination is the soundtrack.
Just because this Halloween movie doesn't have Michael, doesn't mean it's a bad movie. I saw this as a kid and loved the sci fi horror that this had. And the music gave me chills.
Halloween 3 is my favorite Halloween sequel, because I think the franchise should have been an anthology! Michael Myers is a great villain, but he was really only scary in the 1978 original and the Rob Zombie remake. All others, not so much. I wish Carpenter and Hill just went with the original plan, regardless of what the studio said.
Halloween 1978 might have had the most iconic horror theme, but THIS is a dark, brutally twisted, yet beautiful theme! It perfectly captures the "computerised" evil mood of the film! Possibly the most underrated soundtrack since Exorcist 2.
I have good news for people who are a fan of this movie. Jason Blum is thinking of making a sequel to this movie and man I am so pumped! If he decides to do. Because he is interested in doing it. This movie is criminally underrated and tried something different. After Halloween ends they need to make this one into a trilogy franchise. I love Season Of The Witch.
It has been stated that it would be quite hard to film but his interest and many others to make a season of the witch film are still something they look forward to doing if they can
I just wish that after they finish the 2018 Trilogy, we have a different storyline per movie, like John Carpenter just planned in 1982 since Halloween III
haha, oh yes! the mandatory 80s horror ending... don't forget the voice-echo-effect in the end.., for the drama: "noo.. stop it.. stooop it.. stoooopp IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTT!" :')
Few horror films give you such a sense of dread as this film does. It's hard to describe, it isn't jumpscare scary. It's something far more terrifying.
I grew up as a kid in the 80's. The score "Chariot of Pumpkins" is an unheralded masterpiece. Unencumbered by the monstrosities of generic soundtrack music today - this score personifies the film in a sinister light of intrigue - the 80's was the epitome of cinematic grandeur and musical ambience coupled together in many of those films was just real timeless nostalgia!
"I do love a good joke, and this is the best ever, a joke on the children!! It was the start of the year in our old Celtic lands and we'd be waiting in our houses of wattles and clay. The barriers would be down, you see, between the real and the unreal. The the dead might be looking in to sit by our fires of turf on Halloween, (The Festival of Samhain). The last great one took place 3,000 years ago, when the hills ran RED with the blood of animals and children...It was part of our world, our craft. To us, it was a way of controlling our environment. It's not so different now, it's time again. In the end, we don't decide these things, you know, the planets do. They're in alignment, and it's time again. The world is going to change tonight, doctor. I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. And... Happy Halloween."
When most people were listening to Bon Jovi or Duran Duran on their Walkman, I was listening to this... perfect pulse and mood for a focused dedicated walk... even better at night in the rain....
Man this movie was creepy as hell. I love the soundtrack. This movie is awesome, I don't know why so many people bash on it. If it wasn't called Halloween I think more people would like it.
The reason people bashed on it, is because it didn't have Michael Myers in it. But the original plan for the Halloween series after 1 and 2, was to make a whole series of Movies that revolved around the holiday, but it would have a different killer/plot in each film. However, due to the popularity that was garnered by Michael Myers in Hallween 1 and 2, fans were not pleased to see that this was an entirely different movie with a whole new plot, and Halloween 3 ended up flopping and the original plan for the entire series was changed because Michael Myers was too good a Villain to get rid of and replace. So with that, the Halloween series ended up being changed to where it was now revolved around Michael Myers as being the Main Villain, thus leading to the movies that followed after 3, before the restart with H20 and Resurrection, and before the 2007 remake of 1 and 2. With that said. If Michael Myers didn't do well, and there was a proper explanation of why the 3rd movie didn't feature him, we would've had an entirely different Halloween movie series with a whole sleuthe of Villains or Monsters or Other Evil things that all took place on the Holiday that is the Namesake of the movies.
It was truly one of the great horror movies...it was very daring for its time..just like the original assault on pc 13.....kinda shocking with the kids and the masks...loved this movie.
I was 3 years old when this movie came out. Scared the absolute crap out of me. I remember walking in on my parents watching it at the scene with the boy and his parents in the screening room and the mask “comes to life.” After that I refused to watch it. 30 years later I happened on it this time of year on AMC and watched it. Next thing I know, I’m buying the DVD. It’s been in the rotation of my October horror movie marathon ever since.
Great story! 😊 The scene that really sticks out in my mind, is when that woman scratches away at the Silver Shamrock logo's chip at the back of the mask, then all of a sudden that laser beam hits her in the mouth and all that's left of her face is mush, with multiple spiders crawling out of her mouth 😮 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 Made me sick, the first time I seen that as a 9 year old. Nowadays, I can't help but laugh, seeing as how ridiculous it is as an adult lol 😂 You're very beautiful BTW! 😉❤🌹 .....just wanted to let you know! 🤗
@@Donscottgaming Aww, Thank you for the compliment 😊 Yes, that scene you described was number 2 of what I think are the scariest scenes of that movie. You definitely have to give special effects and makeup credit where credit is due. They nailed the realism of the gore.
@@ericamichelle99 You're very welcome ❤ 😊 I totally agree. The kills in that movie, were so much more gut-wrenching and bizarre, compared to Myers' kills from "Halloween" (1978) and "Halloween II" (1981) I'll admit that I wasn't too crazy about "Halloween III" when I first seen it as a kid (mainly because I was confused as to why it wasn't connected to Michael) But, now as an adult, I appreciate it much more in retrospective, because now I know Carpenter's original intention on wanting to make the "Halloween" series, it's own anthology, wanting each movie to have it's own unique characters and stories, centered around the Halloween season/holiday. It's just unfortunate, many other people didn't get it either and we were instead, given the same old Michael Myers rehash over and over again, throughout the years.
John Carpenter's idea was to create a Halloween anthology, all telling creepy or horrific tales, however the Michael Myers fans could not see past that .
So many people hated this because of no Michael Myers. My opinion was that Carpenter should have stayed the course with his original vision for the franchise with a new film and different story every few years under the Halloween name. This concept could still be going strong to this day if they would have stayed the course and would have been something to look forward to each and every release for something new. The problem was the lack of education to the public of what Carpenter's vision for the franchise was supposed to be, in my view. He should have done a better job making clear that Michael Myers died in H2 (as originally intended) and the franchise will continue with a new movie and new story with each release.
MystikWizard He made it pretty clear. Michael was blown up in a fiery explosion and burned to a cinder. You cant really get more obviously dead than that.
+MystikWizard If not for all the dumb sequels there would have been no "Michael Myers cult" in the first place... Only H1 and 2 are good, and Season of the Witch, although not in the same league as the original, is still enjoyable and creepy. Part of it is the music
I agree, but people just didn't GET this movie. It has since become a cult classic, and I enjoy it greatly. But you still got some dipshits pissing and moaning because Michael isn't in it. Trust me, I'm a massive Halloween fan and looooooove Michael Myers to death, but the sequels were all regurgitated crap. The whole Cult of Thorn thing, yeah it was a nice try, but Michael's actions don't need to be explained. As with Rob Zombie's remake, and telling Michael's back story. We didn't need one. Who cares WHY he kills, he just does! Keep him mysterious. You don't humanize him, he's supposed to be evil personified. But as much as I love Michael, killing him and Loomis at the end of Halloween II was the perfect ending to that story. Don't water down great characters. Same with Freddy. Loved the Elm St franchise, but Dream Warriors (the best sequel, imo), could have been a fitting end. And Halloween, as an anthology, a new film with a new story every Halloween would've been cool. As long as John Carpenter, Debra Hill, and Alan Howarth were on board.
+GLITZandGLOOM Totally agree. H1 and H2 are *the* slasher movies par-excellence no wonder though Mr Carpenter's a genius of evil _The Thing_ for me is his greatest achievement, best sci-fi horror ever
Halloween: Season of the Witch would have been a better title because as said before, having 3 in there makes people think it's a continuation of the story from Halloween II so of course people will be pissed when Michael Myers isn't in the film. Friday the 13th apparently didn't learn from Season of the Witch's mistakes when they decided to release an F13 film without Jason in it.
One of the best and most creepy Horror Flicks ever. Too bad it is so underrated. If they had just called it "Season of the Witch" instead of giving it the Title Halloween 3, which had a lot of people thinking it was somewhat linked to the Michael Meyers lore, it might have gotten a bigger fan base.
It being called "Halloween III" definitely threw a lot of people off. I know Carpenter's intention was to end the Myers story in H2, and start an Anthology of Halloween-themed movies (Season of the Witch being the first and only attempt), but it confused people and pissed them off when going to see the film, excepting Michael and getting some completely different story instead.
I remember back in 1982 that so many people were upset that Michael Myers was not in this film but personally, I loved the idea of new Halloween stories under the “Halloween” name and this one was brilliant!... Conal Cochran (played by Dan O'Herlihy) was perfectly cast as the James Bond-type megalomaniac super villain that wanted to take over the world by killing millions of children and their families on Halloween night!...This idea should have been a perfect way to begin a series of Halloween-themed movies instead of the monotonous (and made only for money) sequels we got instead about Michael Myers and how many different ways there are to kill teenagers!...I really hope that someone will try this idea again...Maybe a TV series?...American Horror Story seems to be pretty popular...Why not a Halloween series?
+zombiebabe1960 Agreed. I only care for the first three movies. This one was good even though MIchael wasn't in it. At least they tried something new, after that it was just milking the cow.
it was originally suppose to be about different things with myers being the boogeyman then the witch etc its just that myers character got popular and carpenter got paid a lot to bring him back I'm part 2
This score is incredible. Many people fail to realise the intense nature of sculpting sound with Modular equipment that is now absent in the film industry. This is a masterpiece.
If everyone accepted this movie, The Curse of Michael Myers and Resurrection never would've happened. Rob Zombies' Halloween 1 and 2 might've still happened, but the sequels wouldn't exist.
Troin Hey, H20 is pretty good, and so is the alternate cut of Halloween 6. Plus, without Halloween 6 we wouldn't have Paul Rudd, so really, this is the best possible outcome. At least Halloween 3 is starting to get the following it deserves.
Back in the day, this movie was only known for its stark disassociation with the Halloween movies. It was adored for the soundtrack though. But. To listen to this, in the times we live in today, it is truly terrifying. Witchcraft meets technology.🖤🕷🥺
I love this movie, because to me anyway....it actually FEELS like a Halloween movie. I've always thought the whole "Samhain/Witchcraft/Pagan thing" was just so awesome. The Myers movies could have been about anything....some mental patient hacking up babysitters in a mask.....such generic slasher stuff.
Hypnotic and deeply mesmerizing, the synthesized sound goes far beyond what music generally does, bsolutely tranfixing and stunning! Also check out Morricones' Bestiality and opening to Carpenter's The Thing, maybe some Herrmann and Stravinsky while you're at it.
This movie is very underrated. It is very good, in my opinion. It took the series in a new direction but makes you wonder what would happen if they continued in this direction.
I was too small to enjoy this film when released in 1983 I was only five but several years later to see this as a young child ..... it took me in a different direction altogether. It's films like this that have such simple and rudimentary cinema originality coupled with a dope kickass soundtrack man those were the days the 80's afforded me as a child!!!
I remember when I first saw this movie on TV. I was like “what? How have I never heard of this one?” I had no clue what I was in store for coming out of all the other Halloween movies. Never saw Michael but It didn’t matter because this movie grips you in from the very first scene. One of the best in the franchise!
@@TehPesky No, it's not. Halloween 1978 is way better, Halloween 2 1981 is better, Halloween 4 : The Return Of Michael Myers is better, Halloween 2018 is better, Halloween : 20 Years Later is better, and Halloween 2007 is better. Everything else is debatable but those Halloween films I listed are flat out better than Halloween 3 : Season Of The Witch.
A Horror MASTERPIECE with one of the greatest atmospheric soundtracks of Horror history!!! H3 is the best film is the whole franchise!!!! My fave Horror movie of all time it's in my top 5 fave movies of all time too & dan challis (tom atkins) is my favourite movie character ever. Love this movie & it's BEAUTIFUL music
The early 80s john carpenter synths will always stand the test of time. So dark yet so compelling. Carpenters H3 sound sounds a close relation to christine which were released a year apart in 82 and 83. Its shame it sort of ended there, would of loved to hear carpenter do more of this similar synth work in the later 80s.
Carpenter's doomy electronic drones on "Halloween III" predates those which fellow film composer, Brad Fiedel would contribute to 1984's "The Terminator" (which was released just two years after "Halloween III"). Another notable coincidence is that Halloween III also features "machanical antagonists" just as "The Terminator "would with its titular character
I wish they would restart this franchise with the original intention of having a new movie/story or stories every Halloween.... John Carpenter's scores are fantastic ( Halloween, Escape from NY, The Thing, etc.) and this. I love so many of his movies... Terribly underrated on so many levels. Other people don't get it... oh well. Glad I do. Take care... Halloween's only a few months away....
Exactly. I also would of rather had each HalloweeN to have a different story/idea. Michael Myers got degenerated throughout each album. And yes, Halloween is almost here!
It's very likely that they never went in this direction because of the dumbed down masses that kept wanting the one dimensional aspect of the franchise to continue and didn't want to have to think much beyond guy in mask kills teenagers. I do think it would be awesome though if it was a series of different stories almost like Creepshow but all Halloween themed. Almost like these things are happening in the same Halloween universe in different places but the same evil is controlling them.
You're not the only one. Until last October, I had no idea that Halloween 3 ever even existed because all people ever talk about is Michael Myers. Once I watched this movie, it became my favorite Halloween movie behind the first one. I was extremely disappointed that Halloween 3 got such a negative response from audiences. I think that doing a different story each year would've been an interesting idea. And from a logical standpoint, Halloween 2 should've been the end of Michael Myers. Hopefully with Rob Zombie not making anymore Halloween films, Carpenter will decide to come back or someone will work with Carpenter to resurrect the Halloween series and take it the original route Carpenter had originally planned back in the 80s. But overall, Halloween 3 is extremely underrated. I think people would like it if they watched it with an open mind
I think why you all think it sucks is because your looking at it through a Michael Myers point of view. If this film were not to be called Halloween III, would you like it better? I think the film is great
I like this movie too. It had some really good ideas and it was pretty creepy. But sadly there are problems with the movie too. I especially liked the open ending it made it even more creepy. :)
It's actually one of my favorites. In the grand scheme of things, of course, it's not the greatest film ever made but I love the atmosphere and the soundtrack is incredible. I'm not sure why people hate this and praise the Halloween films that came after... they had Myers in them and they were horrible.
