Halloween Graveyard Fence - Fence Columns Decoration Idea See our DIY Halloween cemetery fence and Halloween graveyard decoration ideas. Need a Halloween cemetery fence, archway entrance, pillars, or columns to protect your Halloween decorations and spooky DIY Halloween props. Make this haunted house fence and scary Halloween columns & pillars. In this behind the scenes video we share the construction and fabrication process in designing and creating our Halloween entrance gate columns, archway, pillars, and cemetery iron looking fencing sections for our home yard haunt graveyard. We walk you through step by step and talk about materials and all the steps we took to finish these projects. No Graveyard is complete without tombstones and a fence to go around it. Its also a great way to protect and help keep all those precious gravestones and motorized or pneumatic props safe and secure. They make great places to mount ghouls and skeletons to help scare the trick or treaters. I have attached several different channel references that are great examples to help you decide your design and tips to build our own fence and columns.
These pillars and columns turned out good enough to fool the city into thinking they were real and built without a permit to make them. They are constructed of 3/4" plywood, strips of 1" x 3" pine, 2" white foam carved and sculpted to look as though its old, cracked, and run down. The have rear doors with vents that lock to house electrical equipment like stereo speakers and wiring for lighting. We mounted 4' work lights with black light bulbs to give the yard a glow. They were painted with a grey color and aged with watered down black. For the brick look we used fake brick paneling from the hardware store and cut miters on the corners. We used 1/8" x 2" steel angle brackets that were mounted to the sides of the pillars to mount the fencing too by using 3/8" through bolts Making a secure and strong connection. We hope you enjoy and get some ideas and inspirations for yours.

Thanks, funny we have a similar problem in our front yard with a slope so what I did one year is build these plywood wedges that match the angle of the ground. You can see them on our Set Up Day 2011. Ours are pretty heavy to but helps keep them from falling over.

kudos to Fordfalcon1962nblue for finding the Thief perp and trashing them. That's the one thing I've always hated ,when trying to have a Haunted House ,was the smart aleck that wanted to tear up stuff, or blow hard mouthing off.( I think really they're scared and trying to act tough to hide it ) Makes it bad for everyone else trying to enjoy. Oh and good Job as usual HollywoodHaunter ! Peck

and intresting story..we had both our black light bulbs stolen too back in 2007....had cameras, found out what kind of truck it was....came back a week or two later for new ones we had installed, saw them drive by on the camera, got ready, ran out and base ball batted the truck about 5 times, smashed the headlights out, hit the bed in a few times, but this was AFTER the criminal got zapped by 140 volts of hot wire coil springs we installed into our bulb sockets- lol

nice design on the pillars/columns. I see some comments about cost too much. I personally build about 3 props a year or improve the ones we have, it really doesn't cost that much, but storage is always a big concern
@HollywoodHaunter
@HollywoodHaunter 11 лет назад
No the columns are pretty heavy because of the plywood they are made from plus when the fence is bolted together it doesn't go anywhere. I actually have a hard time tipping the columns over enough to get power cables under them when everything is assembled and at times have to take it back apart. The first year I placed re-bar into the ground for the fence to slide over to make more stable and I don't anymore cause it just isn't necessary.
@HollywoodHaunter

Hey Chris, do you mind if I copy your small columns for our haunt. These will go great with my large columns since the fronts are almost full brick, and they won't take forever to detail. P.S. Still waiting on your motion sensor how to video, lol. I know there are a few out there, but I'm sure yours are a notch above the rest.

Sorry just getting this Ricky and if your still curious about the sizes of our columns I know on our Facebook we have an items for sale photo album and there are some dimensions with a tape measure with pictures. I think they are around 14" wide and 4' tall but I can't remember exactly. One way you could do it is to draw it out and try to design and make them in a size where you can get the most out of your material your using. Let us know if we can help with anything else. =)

Hey guys... could you tell me some tips on how you cut and shaped the foam caps for the columns ? Amazing work!
@HollywoodHaunter
@HollywoodHaunter 9 лет назад
Brian Griffith Hey Brian, when we carved the foam tops we started with lets say a solid piece or a couple pieces of foam glued together to make a 2' x 2' square that can be 6" or more thick. Then I found the center point on the top and using a straight edge and sharpie I drew lines from the center dot out to each corner giving me an X. Then with a horse or dog hair brush (the metal one with several rings with teeth) I filed each outside edge down staying flat with the brush and pulling toward myself. If you follow were the lines were and keep the center point the highest and the out side edge the lowest you will start to see a pyramid shape form. You just have to be careful and pretend the x lines are always there. Then I just used sand paper to smooth it all out. Let me know if I made sense or not, hope that helps give you an idea.
@briangriffith1467

Hollywood Haunter thank you so much! yess you explained it well. also, are the bigger columns a perfect square or are they shorter on the sides? did you use 1 inch crown staples to staple it all together? you think i could use brad nails?

Still so inspired by you guys. Can I build the columns myself (a chick, with no construction experience)? Can I have Home Depot cut the plywood for me? How do I then "staple" them to form a column? I can do the artistic cosmetics. I made my first columns last year out of foam...I can, and will do better. We made our fence out of PVC (spray painted metallic black), linked with store-bought plastic chains, topped with hand-cut/hand-painted foam finials. Those were then linked to foam columns with 99 Cent Store skull door knockers and hot glue (melted in the setting So Cal sun). I only have 5 1/2 months left...getting excited/stressed. Thanks!

Hey Peter thanks for the kind message, I can't remember how much we spent but I can tell you that most of the projects like this were built with materials free from craigslist or left over from other past projects. If you had to buy everything new from like a Home Depot I bet you would spend close to $250 Always check the the 70% off purple painted wood cart usually at the rear of a HD box store if you can, we save a lot of money that way. =)

What material did u use on the gate for the decorative circle part. Also, what are the measurements for in between the poles & height? Thanks :)
@HollywoodHaunter
@HollywoodHaunter 9 лет назад
the metal portion of the arch was one of those arches for weddings or gardens you see at several arts and crafts or nursery stores and then we add the wood portion to the under side. The fence was made in 4 foot sections and just under 4 foot high. We would connect a couple together so there was eight feet of fence between the pillars. We have some great photos on our Facebook page if your interested.

+Hollywood Haunter I think the other person wanted to know from what you made the decorative circles in the fence. I'm guessing 3" Pvc pipe
@HollywoodHaunter
@HollywoodHaunter 8 лет назад
Yes, if that is what they were asking your correct. I think it may have even been 4" PVC pipe rings cut at about 3/4" to 1" thick. It's a lot of cuts and a lot of sanding sharp edges afterward but it adds another extra detail. Thanks teodelfuego!

The best advice is craigslist, yard sales and thrift stores. We are constantly checking for updated ads. Home Depot and Lowes also have a discounted pile of building materials. Let your friends and family know what items you need, they may have it lying around their houses taking up space :)

@HollywoodHaunter
@HollywoodHaunter 9 лет назад
You know we built everything in this video over a two year period and spent around $350-$400 at the most but that really isn't that much when you look at how much the descent decorations for sale at the stores cost. The plastic Posing skeletons for example can range anywhere between $30-$100 Plus don't forget you can always find the fee materials online like craigslist ads etc. Hope that helps and thanks for watching. =)
