It's always more horrifying when atrocities are committed by an apparently-sane person with a nice upbringing and a healthy social life (e.g. "The Good Son"). Why? Because it breaks all of society's "rules" about what makes a bad person do bad things. You can't anticipate what that kind of evil is capable of.
WillDaBeard I’d say that’s being harsh on Anakin. We NEEDED the prequels to help explain and justify why Vader would sacrifice himself for his son (somebody he’s only met twice)
The original Dr Loomis was brilliant. His acting shows how damaged his character is and how desperate he is to stop Myers. You learn how awful he is just by the effects he left on Loomis.
The original Halloween was based on John Carpenter's experience growing up in the American south and witnessing horrific violence being done without any real motive other than hate. He wanted to channel that and create a killer that was simply fueled by blind hate, not for any one or any thing, just a pathological need to kill and he put the mask on him to, as Phelous points out, ensure that no one can relate to him on any level, a completely motionless, dead face... So yeah: poor kid who grew up in an abusive house!! Even though in the original, it's pretty clear the Meyers family are well-to-do and wouldn't that actually be a MORE interesting examination? This rich kid who has everything handed to him and no reason to lash out STILL has the darkness behind his eyes and the need to kill?
Is it just me or didn't it seem that Laurie was safe from Michael? It seemed he just wanted to be family again, especially when he put his knife down and got on his knees. He only tried to kill her when she stabbed him.
At least Halloween ends left a message and a Moral how Trying to stop one evil something else might end up making a new one due to there actions and how they treat others showing the void will always need a heir
12:22 this pretty much sums up why I have grown to dislike the RU-vid copyright algorithm bullshite whatever. The use of original Halloween soundtrack just fit so perfectly for this "betrayal of Loomis' character" joke, and also this ending scene that's being referenced is my favorite part of the 4th movie. Now that the song has been replaced (for good reasons I know, your hands are tied...) not only has the joke lost its original dramatic flair, but the Donald Pleasence's scene becomes ridiculous (in the most negative way of speaking). Again, can't fault you, I blame the system... In other news, I just saw the new Halloween (which I thought was great) and what a perfect way to finish my day by watching Phelous tackle the ultimately very meh Rob Zombie re-imagining or whatnot. Seen this review (and its sequel) at least ten times and it's still gold, great job!
Funny that there is a video of Phelous with a russian voice over posted by a fan channel that still has that track playing in that scene. RU-vid Copyright bot is beyond broken.
Hell even the short scene of Freddy as a kid wasn't poorly done, it was used to establish he was evil and cruel from the start (even if it's a little bit silly) but here we have to try to relate to Michael. Why I didn't mind the child Freddy scenes in Freddy's Dead is the idea was that Freddy was supposed to be the villain, we were not supposed to like him (as a good guy), he wasn't innocent. Michael in this was the victim
Phelous, I love all of your work but from 3:10 - 4:05 is probably the hardest your videos have made me laugh. No matter how many time I watch it, I can’t stop laughing! Too funny.
I just assumed that everyone in the town was assholes. I got used to Michael as the good guy. In fact, I just assumed that the nurses cheated on their taxes or had over-due library books.
It almost feels like the director took what could be a cautionary tale about the fact psychopaths are born, not made, and tried to turn it into a circumstantial sociopath's revenge story... are we even supposed to want any of them to survive at this point?
I'm not listening! Aaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!! Why the reupload, though? Also, I hate how people assume bad childhood = relatable villain. That's just awful writing.
@Juan D'Marco This was re-uploaded because the copyright bots blocked it worldwide, since they didn't like Phelan using any clips from the movie, but really it's usually because they don't like internet critics calling a crappy movie a crappy movie.
@@MarquisLeary34 when watching Bay friday the 13th from 2009 i felt they should of focus on a team of college students planing to film the Murders of crystal lake for their project well staying at the camp also have one guy who could be the grandson of Alice Hardy telling the story of Jason mother to his friends who think he crazy thinking Jason would come back on the day he died as it would have been better than the 2009 trash we got
He's not even reviewing the movie, Rob Zombie's Halloween movies aren't the best by any means but still. He's not explaining any faults. Just joking the whole time. But whatever
Gotta love the gag of Michael Myres rocking out to ROB ZOMBIE's Dragula, as I can totally see Phelous' version of Michael being a fan of Rob Zombie's music!
I was looking through the youtube channel not that long ago thinking "Wait, Phelan did a lot more then 3 Halloween movies... Damn it..." so nice to see these back.
Several years ago, a buddy of mine owned a bookstore in Georgia. Rob Zombie filmed a few scenes of Halloween II (I think it was the sequel) was filmed at my friend's store over a weekend. My friend charged Zombie 10 grand, which was apparently the going rate for such to-dos. For whatever reason, they didn't get all the shots they needed, so Zombie asked my friend if he could take one more day out of his business. "Sure," my friend said. "That'll be another 10 grand." My friend some Zombie was kind of a dick & the first Halloween remake sucked anyway.
this was a really good review Phelous didn't mind seeing it again. classic. did you know Micheal's coveralls were actually Spruce Green color? they used so much blue lighting in the movie that it made them look blue. Happy Halloween everybody.
Don't worry though, guys, Rob Zombie thinks his movies were nothing short of amazing. He ain't listening to all the haters! ... jesus. I like some of the guy's music but talk about sniff your own farts to get high.
I give Malcolm McDowell credit for at least trying to do a good job, but certainly not Donald Pleasance who was perfectly cast by John Carpenter in 1978. While its sad that Deborah kills herself and leaves little Angel/Laurie an orphan, but casting your spouse as a sexualized & clueless object defeats most of the sympathy. While Tyler Mane looks imposing and is savage in the role, Nick Castle’s eerie stalking Shape was more terrifying and the fact he subtly killed his victims until the sequels made it blander
Phelous I think I remember this upload being re Uploaded so many times that I think this may officially be the Michael Myers of Internet videos IT.WONT.DIE
@Wrath's Heinous Anus Was Devoured by Happy Scrappy Myer's house theme in the beginning of the video and the shape stalks theme when Michael kills long bearded phelous and the music at the end when phelous said "no!" Like loomis in the end of Halloween 4
Give Rob zombie credit, he had to take a bullet for the team and get his hands dirty to make a Halloween remake. Why? Well if he didn’t do it, SOMEONE else would’ve done it and believe it good, it might’ve gone EASILY worse. So it was essentially “Damned if you do, Damned if you don’t”
Yeah I tried to watch Rob Zombie’s Halloween this Month due to Halloween Ends coming out. But I just couldn’t sit through it again. Now I can deal with Curse and Resurrection, but Halloween 2007 just doesn’t feel like a Halloween movie. Everyone is just noisy with yelling and screaming with swearing. They give Michael Myers this tragic backstory he comes from a bad household. It’s just not necessary.
Rob Zombie one said that people are too comfortable with Michael Myers, they’re too used to him, he wanted to redefine the character So he decided to try and give him a sympathetic backstory- wait a minute
noticed you've taken out the original Halloween theme from the original version? Copyright claims am I right? oh well least the majority of the review is intact.
Well, Rob saying it in the commentary means nothing if it isn't at all even hinted at in the film. I remember just being annoyed that the one good character was killed. I wouldn't be surprised if Zombie added in "by the way, he was bad too!" as a way to get people from picking on his film.
Yeah, that was the part of the movie where I clapped out. 1. It totally breaks the whole "motivation" thing went out the window, making the first hour of the fucking movie fucking moot. 2. When Danny plays a good guy, he best live or I'm out.
8:02 So... haven't watched the movie so maybe this scene works bette in context but... She telling her mom that her teacher is a perv who's touching her, and her mom is like "Okay, I don't wanna know." I mean, unless this movie was written by Daryll from charmes, the response doesn't seem appropriate.
So Rob Zombie made these movies to promote his wife - just like Paul W.S. Anderson did with his Resident Evil films. At least Milla Iovovich isn't that bad of an actress. Unlike Rob Zombie's wife.
Paul Hensley Burton and Helena Bingham Carter were a common law marriage; not officially married. However still counts as he at least gave Helena some decent roles in his movies
That reveal sound effect from Halloween has been ruined by you. Not in a bad way, that had always been part of the scariest moments in the film. You use it to good comedic effect
You misread the intent of the hospital sequences. That child Michael is anything but “normal” He’s dead behind the eyes, the emotions are feigned. As soon as he realizes lying about killing and pretending to want to go home won’t get him anywhere he shifts his focus internally. No reason to interact with the meat sacks that are locking you up. Better to bide your time until opportunity strikes and you are capable enough to enact a plan.
Mostly Rob went nowhere with this new direction he took, he had the chance to actually build some kind of lore or crazy reasoning but that doesn't happen, more show than tell how Loomis "failed" him and how Myers thinks even if that would likely be surreal could have been better. They had that mask thing going on but it didn't go anywhere either, sounds like a theme Wes Craven could have written better. Oh well this gave me an excuse to revisit.
I'm wondering if the scenes of Michael as a kid would work better if they just showed him as a normal kid. That way, when he snaps, it's much more impactful because we sympathize with him and then now we have to sympathize with a mass murderer who has no motivation other than enjoyment of the kill. Sort of like Norman Bates in Psycho.
I mean not everything in this movie was a fucked idea I mean The black mesh behind the eyeholes kinda enhanced the “blackest eyes” thing they original was going for as his eyes could see us but we couldn’t see his eyes and due to the black mesh all we could see was black If only Rob Zombie’s movies weren’t the only thing to - no wait, Halloween 4 did that, and amateur costume makers have been doing it for years also
Hey Phelous, would you ever consider doing the other Hellraiser films? I like the first two but 'no' is a perfectly understandable response (if you even see this)
