Halloween Special! Chocolate Orange Layer Cake | Cupcake Jemma

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Yup, that's right, Halloween's a-comin' and I can't wait. See what happened when I went to Crumbs & Doilies HQ to bake a Halloween inspired Chocolate Orange Cake. Never a dull moment at C&D!
Recipe -
525g plain flour
550g caster sugar
95g cocoa powder
3/4 tsp salt
1.5 tsp bicarbonate of soda
zest of 3 oranges
5 lg free-range eggs
350ml coffee
350ml buttermilk
320ml vegetable oil
400g unsalted butter, soft
900g icing sugar, sifted
4-6 tbs freshly squeezed orange juice
250g dark chocolate, melted

Jemma's chocolate cake recipe is amazing! Tried and tested, I get so many great comments on this cake. It stays moist with the vegetable oil and I swear that you cannot taste any coffee (I myself am not a fan of coffee so I would know) 100% recommend making!

I just tried to make this, and if you are struggeling with applying the buttercream, to achieve that nice and smooth finish that Jemma is able to, you need to stir the buttercream batter with a spatula after youve mixed it to remove any excess air. I ended up with airbubbles that did not go away no matter how many times I used my scraper, and the result was that I got crumbs in the buttercream since I tried to many times You live and you learn, hopefully someone doesnt make the same mistake as me :)

Hey Jemma! This recipe is one of the best chocolate cake recipes I have seen and yes baked as well. I halved the recipe and the cakes turned out really soft and the best thing is that the recipe gives you a chocolate cake without using the actual slab of chocolate and it tasted heavenly!

After I cracked open a bad egg once, I will NEVER crack an egg over batter!! I always crack each one separately into a small bowl, beat then add. It's only happened once in 40 years of baking but it taught me a lesson. The smell was so bad, I almost lost it!!

I used the sponge from this receipt to make Black forest cake. The spice is very moist and light so it passed perfect. All in all it's great receipt. 🍰

I made a similar cake for my Halloween Party on the weekend! It was chocolate hazelnut with orange buttercream frosting, candy corn filling, black fondant, marshmallow webs and handmade chocolate spiders. It was a huge success! ^-^
