When it comes to table runners, I don't worry about right-side up, either. A design that's upside down to one diner is rightside up for the diner across the table. Everyone gets something to look at. Those prints are adorable.

These are so fun. I wish I was good with a sewing machine. I made a patchwork quilt throw for my brother’s family, for Christmas. Everything was hand down. It took at least fifty hours!

Thank you so much! I realize now that, even with a “kit,” I would not have known how to proceed and would have done several things wrong. Then I would have been frustrated. I’m just now getting to where I have enough blocks to make two different quilts. I will pay very close attention to you to see how I should do each step! So far, I’ve only quilted a doll’s quilt. I would really like to do some small projects before I try the big ones and I know you have made it much more likely that they will turn out nicely with your tutorial! Thank you again! I think I might treat myself to one of your kits. It sure sounds nice to have the cutting done!

Watching Donna's flip method encouraged me to use it for the baby quilts I have started making. They are only 36 inches square and I think it shows off the patchwork much better on these small quilts.

Quarter inch seam test. Take three, 2.5 inch squares or strips, sew all three together. If your 1/4 inch is accurate, the middle square/strip should be EXACTLY 2 inches.

I do this for every project with the different fabrics in it. It's amazing how each fabric is thicker or thinner and how well it presses to make more or less accurate 1/4" seams. When I was a new quilter, I was stymied by a (too) intricate piecing pattern, and every block ended up too small. I discovered that the homespun that was mixed in with the regular broadcloth type fabrics was much thicker, so I had to make an extra "scant" 1/4" seam to end up with the correct block dimensions. I finally made up a chart so that I knew how much to fudge the seam if it was two homespuns seamed together or a homespun+broadcloth, or two broadcloths. Some of the better quality batiks can through off your seams, too, because they are a heavier fabrics than others.

I love this pattern and also the expertise with which you put this together ! Very easy to follow and easy to understand.My only issue is the way you take off with such a jerky fast speed when you sew it together.Im sure it's because you've made so many of these but I can't help but cringe when you take off with such speed and then abruptly stop.I know this sounds very trivial but it goes against everything I've learned about sewing over the years! Great tutorial!

@MrsGraphiteGal

I was taught not to get hung up on the perfect "1/4" seam but rather concentrate on the finished size, so for instance, if you had two 1.5" cut strips and sewed them together, each strip should measure exactly 1.25" from the pressed seam to the raw edge. if its more, your seam is too narrow and if its less, your seam is too wide. My accuracy improved a lot because i had relied in the past on a piecing foot with 50/2 thread which gave me slightly less than a 1/4". now i use a normal foot and have my needle positioned to ensure the seam is correct.

Nice Table Runner! However, for any table runner, I would recommend 100% cotton batting, so if you put something hot on it - it won't melt!
@amethystsamia
@amethystsamia 7 лет назад
Tabitha Maywald flannel also makes a good batting for runners and tableclothes. It's not as bumpy as traditional batting so if you set a glass on it, it's not likely to wobble over and spill. I've not had trouble with melting with flannel. Yay!

The flip finish works best on smaller projects, but can be done with larger quilts. It will be harder to keep everything flat, but you can use lots of pins or basting to help.

I've made quite a few of your table runners however I've cut them myself. I love the floating stars. I've noticed if I quilt heavier than in the ditch on a turn and flip runner I get a bit of wavy edges. I'm not sure if it's because I stretched it? It doesn't seem to happen if I just stitch in the ditch when quilting. Today you touched on subject of runners being nice and flat and I appreciate your attention to that detail. I thought perhaps I may of not stitched an exact seam? Any ideas or pointers?

I steam press everything very, very flat and then hold on tight while quilting. If you can drop the feed dog on your machine that may help too. I also steam press the runner when it is all finished.
