This was shown at E3 2001 just before the release of Halo, not at E3 2002 (Halo 2 was announced with a cinematic trailer instead). It wasn't intended as a trailer, either, just as an intro as attendees would later play a Halo demo. A trailer was actually shown at E3 2000 and a gameplay at Gamestock 2001. Thanks a lot for uploading this! Sgt. Johnson always makes my day.

The saddest part about this animation was that after the grunt finished helping Sgt Johnson for his presentation, he was going back to his post proud of himself. Only to get betrayed with a shotgun behind his back

After seeing this a part of me thinks so. They could’ve done Cortana, Master Chief himself, Keyes and contextually they all would’ve arguably been better to explain the story/universe of Halo I think they purposely underwrote him so they could develop him later or just to check that we had the same reaction to Sgt Johnson as we did. The voice and lines are just too good and distinct to be a happy accident imo but stranger things have happened
