Halo or SpotON - I can't answer that, but a user sent me some GREAT questions ...
I thought others might want the same information so I made a video.
1. Can the Spoton collar also be used for a training collar? Can you manually give your dog feedback through the app or is the feedback only able to come from the fences that you set up?
2. Is it true that you don't need a subscription to own the Spoton collar? What is the difference between owning Spoton without a subscription and owning Halo with their basic subscription?
3. We do live in the woods and my understanding is that Spoton is better for places with lots of foliage. Have you found that to be true?
4. Most of the bad reviews of Halo seem to be from their older version. Would you consider the newer version to be more like Spoton in accuracy and quality? The main differences I am seeing are: Halo has more features but is less accurate with boundary lines? Am I getting that right?
5. Can you walk a boundary to set up a fence on Halo or is it only set up by drawing it on the map in your app?

Hello, I am in process of deciding which collar is best for us and our Cane Corso. Thanks for all the videos as they have been very helpful. What I want to point out is the main difference and truly the most important difference between the two collars. As someone with a lot of survey grade GPS experience I can say that the satellite coverage is the main and most important difference between these two collars, the other differences are subtle. Halo only supports up to 20 satellites from the GPS (USA) constellation where SpotOn uses satellite constellations from GPS (USA), BeiDou (China), GLONASS (Russia), and Galileo (EU). SpotOn will therefore be MUCH more accurate especially in areas of dense foliage such as wooded areas. Having more satellites will also be more reliable throughout the entire day as you will always have lock on enough satellites for accurate positioning. This would also account for the price difference between the two collars, you are getting much better GPS results form the SpotOn and again important to mention, throughout the entire 24-hour day cycle. I initially was sold on the Halo and am sure it works very well in most cases, suburban flatter terrain areas where tree cover and masking due to terrain is not an issue. I am now leaning towards paying more and going with the SpotOn collar as we camp a lot and live in the mountains with a lot of wooded areas. Anyway, I thought I would just add my 2 cents on my decision making process in case it might help others less familiar with how GNSS technology works......Cheers

I have a Husky. Any opinion on which would be better fit? With them basically the same, cost then becomes a factor. Spot on is nearly 400 more. I was leaning that way mainly because of the added coverage. I live in Kansas and it is pretty much wide open. I do have some woods but I wouldn't let mt dog in them alone, so that is not really an issue. SO in the end I am still torn between the two. I do live near a busy road and safety is a MUST so which did you end up getting? Cost isn't really a factor but I don't want to just waste it either. Great videos.

@@wxmyjnsn it’s a toughie … I don’t think you would be disappointed with the spoton its gps is fantastic, and the feedback settings can be adjusted more … but … I think it might come down to the temperament and I know huskies can sometimes be runners (all though it’s not the rule, all dogs have their own personalities). Personally I have the Halo, and have been happy with it but my dog always wants to be with her people and is very manageable- I also really love the remote call back feature.

@@wxmyjnsn I haven't pulled trigger yet given my Corso still very young and not needed. However, I will be getting the SpotOn due to its superior GPS. I agree with Dog Speaks reply. Also, your point of being in KS and it being wide open skies, the more affordable Halo should work very well with the GPS constellation it uses.

Thank you both for your replies. I do like the idea of a call back feature. My Husky likes to run in the yard but she is only 6mo old so not too sure of her true nature yet. She responds well to verbal (for a Husky) to verbal commands. I am still no closer on a decision - lol

I like your videos. Thanks for sharing. Also, two things I might add. 1) Spot On is on sale right now @ 25% off, making me seriously consider it. 2) Also, for anyone interested in callback options. I have been using a Gizmo Watch 2 for callback for a few years now. It allows me to GPS track my Great Pyrenees, and actually call him.

I came across your video AFTER I bought the Halo collar. I will say, your video gave me some piece of mind that I really did make the right choice. I have used remote static collars so I know my dog will adapt very quickly to the feedback. I’m pretty positive I won’t even have to implement static correction more than a couple times. I actually expect it to be zero because we have already done it with the remote one. The reason I decided on this collar is correction depended on me seeing him do something. What that created was a fear of the remote. This in turn created an environment where if I was standing where he could see me he was afraid to go be a dog. He would constantly look back and be afraid to step in my yard. I didn’t like that one bit. I attributed this to human error in the remote aspect. There’s a lot of variables that went into human error including a special needs adult getting access to that remote and over using it. So undoing that sent us back to exactly where we began. He respects the boundaries when he sees the remote or he feels the collar, but if he’s really amped it takes several corrections. That being said, I HATE the static. I will not use it unless he ignores several beeps and verbal commands. From the videos I’ve watched, I like that I can set the alerts to audio and can utilize that to its full advantage without having to use a static correction. The reason I finally pulled the trigger on this collar was the ability to customize the boundary and the indoor beacon. Comparing prices, functions that I really wanted, and things I didn’t want all went into my decision. The price is high, but if you compare all similar products on the market it really is very reasonable. Do I expect this collar to babysit my dog? No. Do I expect the boundaries that he KNOWS to be a boundary more consistently enforced with less missed opportunities to correct him? Yes. To me, this collar will bring my dog and I much closer as the consistency will be much higher. This in turn allows him a few more freedoms that I currently can not afford him the benefit of the doubt because of his deep stubborn brain knowing that I’m not watching is now off the table. My dog will be able to spend more time barking at the birds, watching my neighbors instead of harassing them through the fence, I will no longer have to treat my kitchen trash like Guantanamo Bay with Gerry-rigged baby gates and a can of ravioli to hold the lid down. And MAYBE we can get to a point that he no longer HAS to be kenneled if he’s alone in my house longer than 2 minutes. My point to this long comment that she so eloquently put is that the collar will not train your dog. That’s still on you. This collar will just provide more consistent feedback that is much more reliable than me seeing him and pressing a button in time for him to associate the correction with what he’s doing. Ma’am, thank you so much for the honest, unbiased, realistic review if what we can expect going into these types of collars. Seeing some bad reviews made me question my purchase decision. Watching your video made me more confident in my choice and tempered my personal expectation of what this collar can do to improve my relationship with my dog. I have high hopes this collar will help my dog and I better understand each other thus creating a stronger relationship.
@KarmaDogSpeak
@KarmaDogSpeak Год назад
That’s exactly right it’s not a magic device merely a tool and if you don’t do proper training and just depend on it your going to be highly disappointed. In addition people need to understand this tool is fluid (due to gps satellites) vs very “static in nature like an invisible fence that’s buried underground. So it’s a different training approach. Thank you for the feedback.

Halo works most of the time. Then it drifts off about every 4hrs. My dogs are outside for a long time guarding livestock. This has horrible gps drift and doesn't update until you physically cycle the power/sleep off and on a few times. If you forget or it drifts sooner than that, it starts shocking your dog over and over until you can find the dog and take it off to reset it. You can't track the dog during this time because the GPS drifts about half a mile in some random (mostly north) direction. We asked for a full refund and did not get a full refund well within our 60 window. A partial was paid after going back and forth with customer service. We really tried EVERYTHING with customer service to get this to work because it's such a great idea, but it's not working because they only use a few satellites vs the competition that is using up to 50.

Your videos are extremely helpful. Thank you. We owned 2 Halo collars briefly but returned them, one kept shocking our dog while inside the house and the other was not strong enough for our long haired shepherd. We are considering Spot On and have a question about the collar. Spot On collar appears much bulkier and more difficult to place on the dog than a simple click collar. Any comments or suggestions for this issue?

hello! Thanks for the video. We are in the process of getting a new Boxer pup for our family. In time, I will need some kind of fence/invisible fence type solution. In researching both of these products it seems you see "it works best with a 1/2 acre or more".......however, where I am, I have roughly 4/10 of an acre. so I guess I am asking for anyone with knowledge to comment regarding the feasibility of using either of these products effectively with less than a 1/2 acre? Pros and cons of doing that etc? Thanks in advance for any help and time offered.

Hi there, I too am trying to figure out which way to go... I have 2 Labradors that are very friendly, and love to visit our neighbors, but they sometimes overstay their welcome. We are also in the Adirondacks :) with poor/useless cell coverage on our property - so we have to rely on our satellite for internet to have cell coverage. Also, you mentioned Halo is waterproof - but is Spot on waterproof as well?

Once the fence is set … the fence data stores in the collar - they are both waterproof - mine are social butterflies as well and the “call back” button on Halo is great for when they need a bit of redirecting. Feel free to email me should you have any other questions.

I own a new Halo collar and absolutely DO NOT recommend it. I've set up the fence as instructed, which is fairly easy. Adjusting the fences, I've found to be nearly impossible, it's easier to delete and recreate the fence if adjustments are needed. The biggest concern is accuracy. We have a clear view of the sky in about 90% of the yard with only a single tree. The collar behaves very sporadically. At times, the warning will sound in the middle of the yard - about 20-25' from the actual "fence" placement, which confuses the heck outta the dog. Other times, I'm able to walk several feet (up to 15') outside the fence without warning. Support is atrocious - 100% email responses and they close cases if you don't respond within 48 hours, guess that's an easy way to call a case "resolved" without actual resolving anything. for the price tag, I would expect far better support, or at least support that actually exists. Battery life is may be 20 hours if it's sitting on place, but actually in use, I haven't been able to get more than 12 out of it before requiring a recharge - keeping in mind that is without static usage (I can't justify using static corrections due to the inaccuracy of the collar/fence, it would be pure animal cruelty). Bottom line is that unless you invest significant time on the social support site on top of your significant financial investment, this is nothing but a GPS collar for when your dog takes off (and yes I say when due to it's lack of functionality). If that's what you're looking for, get an Apple tag - GPS and noise for $30.

This has been my EXACT experience as well :(. I found the fence setup and editing was pretty easy but the inconsistent feedback is really disappointing. Hi Keith, appreciate you comment, curious to know why you had so much difficulty adjusting fences? Was it an app issue? or were you able to achieve it in the app and it didn't seem to "sync?. Personally, I haven't had the issue with support, I've worked in a technology environment before, and it's not unusual to have a "closed" ticket if a person doesn't respond. I would agree with you, it takes a lot of time to really gain the understanding of the product and staying in the know with the the "user tips" and "updates" that are pushed out can feel frustrating. Glad you found a good fit for yourself, with the Apple Tag. Personally, I think I would use the Fi Dog collar for location tracking, but do what works! Have a great day. K

@BlueCurtainBurner Год назад
@@KarmaDogSpeak Creating fences is super easy, however I cannot find a way to make adjustments to an existing fence. I believe this to be in the app itself. I get to the map, see the fence posts, but when attempting to edit a non-end point, the app won't let me select the post to move. I found I had to delete all posts ahead of and including the one I want to adjust, then re-finish the fence entirely. No big deal if adjusting the "end" of the fence, but awful when trying to edit toward the beginning may as well delete the whole thing and walk off another one. Another BIG issue I have is that the app and collar require the fence to be a "box" Our front yard is on a pretty busy street, and the house is about 15' off the street. In order to allow the entire back yard and interior of the home to be in play, I have to extend the fence into the front yard, which then becomes an bigger issue , again due to feedback inconsistency. Hope this helps.
