You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Ham and Prune Sandwich from 1941’s 500 Tasty Sandwiches was just that, ham and prunes. But you’d still wrong. For you see the ham isn’t just ham and the sandwich filling, well, let’s just say it contains no less that six other ingredients. This is one of those sandwiches where I think it could be tasty…or it could suffer from trying to do too much. Btw, some folks ask how a sandwich that isn't plussed up be less than a 10? Plussing up is always about adding something to a sandwich to make it better. But there comes a time when adding more stuff won't really move the needle. It can still be a tasty sandwich without being a 10.

I think pork + fruit is highly underrated. So glad you picked this combo! That filling is not unattractive, that would be good in a pastry too.

I promise you Pork + plum would be infinity better, but this is probably a recipe passed on from depression era cooking.

Moo Shu Pork. A classic dish with plum sauce (prunes are dried plums).

I just remembered that as a child growing up in the Bible Belt of the Deep South, I watched TV commercials for deviled ham believing that it was a wicked food-and I’ve never eaten it. I shall make and eat this sandwich with glee. Thank you, Barry!

Ham and figs go really well together, so ham and prunes doesn't surprise me at all. You know what? Ham goes with pretty much any fruit.

I had a bunch of prunes a couple of years ago and they tasted great! I ate a ton and then felt like I was going to die that night. 😂 Learn from me and limit your prune intake. 🙃

On the surface the prune element was surprising but after thinking it through, many people make a raisin glaze on baked ham. A possible plus up might be a dash of ground cloves.

The texture of whole raisins are a bit much for me in a savory sandwich so poaching and chopping would work well.

“Not the best looking sandwich.” Considering the “pepto bismol pink” of the abomination that was the yeast sandwich, that’s a pretty low bar to get over, have to be careful not to stub a toe on it.
