Hamilton’s braking is extremely underrated. Many point to Ricciardo as the latest braker on the grid because of his overtakes but Hamilton is by far the best at braking late and trail braking. Looking at telemetry from Quali laps, he always brakes the latest but somehow still gets the car rotated and is able to get on power early.
@@ciaronsmith4995 ik you're a massive Kimi fanboy and I don't think Kimi fanboys like Hamilton but this is quite an overtake to do he was quite far back

Some of these comments are from nearly a decade ago (some are even older) and even then people already had huge praise for Lewis. If he was that highly rated 8-9 years ago it’s only fair he gets the amount of praise he gets nowadays.
@@5950ziel Like every top driver then? Unless you think Senna having a car 3 seconds a lap faster than any other was somehow fairer because it happened 30 years ago lol, or Fangio literally switching teams halfway through a season just to get a better car.
@@INFEDnoX Did I mention Senna anywhere? You're just trying to put word in my mouth I didn't say. Saying that he's enjoyed a rocketship for most of his career doesn't mean other drivers didn't have rocketships at points in their careers.
To think this was Lewis in his first year as a rookie. I think Alonso is an amazing driver but Lewis is the best driver in F1 at the moment and will be for some years to come.
Some of the so-called F1 fans on here are pathetic. This overtake, and many others mentioned by people in the comments (whether by HAM, ALO etc.) are fantastic overtakes, and its sad to see people posting comments on this video and videos just like this saying how one overtake is better, or just going out of their way to find things wrong with them. I'm not a Hamilton fanboy, but that was a great pass. When I was watching It live, I never expected him to even attempt the pass., and either did Kimi !
you know what makes me laugh you all sit here and argue like your opinion actually matters. I bet you there is more mutual respect between the actual drivers themselves than some of you so called fans show other driver fans.
Kimi did an amazing job even taking part in this race after his crash and neck injury. He did an awesome job being able to race with limited mirror-viewing capability and pain. In the end it turned out to be one of the moments that earned him the title.
Not necessarily. Ricciardo passed Bottas similarly in this year's edition of the Italian GP without any contact or damage, so a clean overtaking move from that far back is possible to achieve although quite rare, but still.
Fuel saving has always existed in F1 and will stay in the sport in some form at least as long as the teams are allowed to under-fuel the cars, i.e., start the races with less than the full tank capacity of fuel onboard.
I'd say that the best all-round driver on the grid is Alonso but if Hamilton is wheel to wheel with anyone then he'll win near enough every time. Next year will be interesting if Alonso goes to McLaren Honda, especially if Honda deliver a good engine.

Beautifully precise..And from a mile back! Lewis, Kubica and Kobayashi are the best overtakers in F1 today, although they have radically different driving styles, they are still classified as aggressive...
To brake so much later and get that car turned in, of line and carrying alot more speed took balls and skill. Amazing move, fair play to Kimi for giving him room.
Hamilton is currently the most aggressive driver in the F1, always fighting. Even if he sometimes mades mistakes, we have to thank him for making F1 more spectacular (or rather less boring)
"thank him for making F1 more spectacular (or rather less boring)" God that aged terribly. Especially from '17-'20. At least after when he has a much less competetive car we can really see how good he is. That double overtake at Silverstone and that thrilling pole lap at Hungary were some of the best moments in F1 during the "Verstappen domination" era.
@@potatogirlcultist19 Well it's a cycle of racing life. The "chosen ones" are the ones who in their early years fight against the boring domination, then due to their immense talent themselves dominate and then get a few twilight years where they cement their status as legends. Lewis right now might not be performing at the level he once was, but with what he's pulling, he's proving that all his achievements weren't flukes, but deserved.
Holy crap how the hell did he do that from so far back!? It wasn't like Kimi wasn't braking hard either as you could see he was on the limit from the puff of smoke from the outside tyre on the Ferrari. Lewis just has huge brass balls
One of the best and funniest overtaking manoeuvres i've ever seen. He managed to overtake Kimi from such a long way back. Its amazing how much speed he was able to carry into that corner as well.
I'm pondering as to wether this is the greatest overtake in recent F1 history?! Pure racing instinct and phenomenal car control! Anyone with a better example of a classic overtake in the last 5 or so seasons then let me know.....
I know Kimi had a neck injury, but he braked at least 30 meters later than him into one of the most trickiest braking zones in F1. 9 times out of 10 I would say I driver is really stupid for even thinking about overtaking from that far back, but he manages to pull of a clean pass and keep it on the black stuff. This pass, his performance in Silverstone in 2008, winning from 14th in Hockenheim, his brilliant performance under massive pressure in Abu Dhabi 2021, fending off Nico Rosberg on worse tyres in Bahrain 2014, the pole laps in Korea 2011, Singapore 2018 and Hungary 2023 show why he is a 7-time champion. Sure, the car helps him a lot, but many times he has shown that the ar isn't the only reason.
@impinas it was good though, this is a prime example of one of the most brave overtakes in f1 as the distance between hamilton and raikonnen was massive yet he went for it.
rubbish.... You can not ovetake there from further back without a significant tyre advantage... and just remember this was Hamilton's FIRST season in F1.
So what's your point? Hamilton did something near impossible? Well once you bear in mind the fact that Raikkonen was in the spare car after his car was destroyed in his 200mph FP3 crash, and as a result of the crash, nursing a bad neck... You kind of end up at a similar advantage as to that you mention, regarding tyres. My point was simple - people get caught up in nostalgia too much to realise that, for whatever reason, these kind of moves (or moves just as spectacular) still happen.
In 2007 we didn'd have DRS and this was Hamilton's first season in F1. Ricciardo's move was not from further back and was surely not more impressive. I think the dislike you have for a certain driver is clouding your judgement.
Well done for editing out your completely irrelevant (to my context) talk of Ricciardo's performances; good to know you realised just how irrelevant that was. Again, what's your point here? I merely said the nostalgia folk seem to forget that there are plenty of great moves, like this one, in F1 today. Ricciardo's move was from ever so slightly closer (Hamilton made the move just after the 200m board, Ricciardo just before the 150m board), so if you really want to split hairs, be my guest, but fundamentally there's not a great deal of difference between the two. As for your final point... I don't know how you extrapolate that I have a dislike for Hamilton when I'm simply talking about how people should not forget that great moves like this one still happen today. But, if only to assure you of my impartiality, I happen to think Hamilton is one of the best drivers, if not the best driver, on the grid today.
It was not irrelevant.. I just didn't want to debate back and forth.. 1) Hamilton overtakes a vigilant Raikkonen(he tried to react) who knows that Lewis is coming while Ricciardo overtakes a sleeping Bottas. 2) 2016 cars had less downforce than 2007 cars hence the longer braking zones. 3) with the advent of hybrid technology(2014 - today, there is no pure braking anymore but a complex interaction between mechanical and electrical components). Look at how much [braking]power Hamilton and Raikkonen had to produce(the smoke) to stop the car. No excessive lift and coast for fuel saving(like in 2016) but pure mechanical braking. 4) Ricciardo's overtake on Bottas was very clean and beautiful, but Bottas was driving a Williams and RedBull probably was the best car under braking if the moves Verstappen and Ricciardo were able to pull last year was anything to go by.
Reminds me a lot of the move Gilles made on Arnoux into the first corner at Dijon 1979, somehow getting the car stopped enough to make the apex. Not many drivers have the precision required to pull this off. This requires more skill than simply going for a more dramatic-looking take at higher speeds (130R, Eau Rogue etc).
One of the best over takes in F1!! The reason is that he's braking from nearly 220MPH to around 65MPH, pulls off the move from so far back, locks up his front wheels, turns in with them still locked, corrects it with opposite lock and makes the overtake stick!! There is'nt many drivers in the world who could pull that off without crashing into the other car or not making the turn!! If only his overtakes this year were as clean as this he might have a few more wins under his belt.
@SheldonKawonga locking up is basically due to how quickly the car has to slow down, if you brake too late, then your gonna luck up because you need to make sure the car slows down so that you can take the turn nicely, its a hard concept to explain,
@jraybay not really. Kimi was in massive pain due to the crash in practice the day before. So much that he said he couldnt hold his head up when braking.
From what i remember Kimi's neck was fucked after a massive crash in quali, and towards the end of the race he could barely hold his head up under braking, so might have been braking early? That's what he said afterwards anyway. Still, gotta give credit to Lewis - that first season when he took on Alonso was brilliant!!
And he was also in the spare car in which the team used Massas preferred setup and difn't have time to change it And yes there were spare cars in 07 . It was the last season they were allowed
that was a nice move. kimi musta been asleep at the wheel to not be defending the inside against a mclaren on the long straight at monza. he shoulda expected an outbrake maneuver.
Rofl. Every driver was taking that inside line in the race. Kovalainen ran wide and Barrichello was forced to go wide with him. Massa took advantage of it and owned them.
Even though I am fan of Kimi Raikkonen and don't like Hamilton too much this is still one of the greatest overtakes in F1 history. It is just amazing how he can turn the car into the corner. Bit of luck for sure, but great move anyway.
Also, don't give that bull story about Alonso being a shadow of himself, he was driving very well, it's just that hamilton drove even better. Look at how many unforced errors alonso made that season. Also, Alonso is a baby, he can't handle it when there is equal driver opportunity, HE HAS to be waved through by his team. Perfect example, Indianapolis, same strategy, same car and yet if alonso was better than hamilton, he would have made it past, and not get angry at the team for letting him thru
Hamilton's car was setup quite much for oversteer, as you can see he's able to drift into the corner. If his car was setup for more understeer, he wouldn't have made it... What I want to say with this is, that Hamilton has a great feeling of what his car is going to do. He came from so far. Raikkonen wasn't going to defence, because he didn't expect it at all. I'm a Raikkonen fan, but I also like Hamilton very much. I think Hamilton is one of the best Formula 1 drivers. =)
@jamesreesmusician Not much, although i've read articles in F1 RACING & AUTOSPORT magazine and they all say similar things. Do you know of any other overtakes in F1 as skilled as this?
hey iam not talking about lewis forcing people to crash iam talking about drivers not overtaking correctly and correctly means a clean move that doesnt give punctures to other drivers that doesnt break their suspensions and that doesnt break their wings, and a move that doesnt ruin anybodys race (japan 2008) when he ruined kimi's race.
I agree thats the best overtake of 2011.. But the conditions were a bit diffrent i think, Alonso just came out the pits on new tires, wich means he had a slower drive down to Eau Rouge, and no heat in the tires.. but still it was a crazy overtake..
@GarrettM221 To be fair, when has Hamilton had a slow car like a Toro Rosso. Yeah he was uncompetitive in 2009 but he still had the Mclaren team behind him so they could easily make progress. Vettel scored points in his first race for BMW Sauber in 2007 covering the injured Kubica. He then got signed by Toro Rosso later that year and got 4th in Shanghai. A year later he won a race in a Toro Rosso and consistently scored points. He has worked his way up. Hamilton has had everything given to him.
@Itsame93 I don't know I still think Schumacher is the most aggressive driver. He wont think twice about running a car off the track and giving them no room whatsoever if it means he can stay ahead of them/
Thanks it wasn't a dumb video I am actually laughing out loud > lol . steve matchett also made me laugh he has an evil laugh when he sees it lol. it's funny also because I'm mclaren fan xD

Great ballsy move, to even go for it from that far back takes some "maracas" but the fact that kimi was driving with an injured neck has to be taken into account thou, but still was pretty damn good.
@rapperzondernaam Well, Alonso is (for me) the most complete driver, but exactly for that reason he prefers to take some good points home rather than make an accident. But yes, he is always fighting as well, specially this season against the faster Red Bull.
Hamilton demonstrated his qualities working his way up through the lower formula, GP2 in particular, you only have to look at races like Turkey in GP2 where he made sensational amount of overtakes from near the back to get 2nd place Yes he was handed a great gift with a seat at McClaren, BUT what does he do his very first season? He outperforms the world champion racing in the same team as him! He has proved himself worthy of his place, and he made the best of a bad car in 2009 like few could
