Even if none of these guys do anything as excellent as Hamilton again, they have another 30-40 years to create good art. I suspect there is much joy ahead watching their shows.

Been having a rather hectic stress inducing several days. At the Toyota dealership for two hours of repairs, sat down in waiting room, opened my laptop. Went to RU-vid and saw the Kennedy Center honors Hamilton collaborators. Clicked on with no hesitation. Sat back and was taken to a place that brings smiles, delightful remembrances of having seen "Hamilton" on Broadway and pure joy. Joy in watching four beautifully talented people celebrate each other and respect each other's uniqueness {respond to each other's energy very positively}. How fortunate for us to live in a time when these four geniuses share their creativity with all of us. Thank you for bringing this interview to RU-vid. I shall be watching the Kennedy Center Honors on December 26th. My stress has gone from 10 to 1 just watching this.

What a team ! What an uplifting gift to America during these troubling times. Every aspect and detail of this production points to it being a masterpiece. Hope this will be part of dramaturgy courses all over the world. Seen it many times and still look forward to seeing it again and again.

I hope that by now you already saw it at least on Disney+ . Hamilton is more than a play, and I like what the journalist said at the end of the piece, Hamilton is about the people on stage, not elaborate set pieces (although the rotating set is astounding on its own). The choreography is just part of the show as much as the songs, the acting, the lyrics, the rapping, it's all one big breathing organism that just takes you somewhere else

Although I'm sure this story is interesting, stories about Broadway musicals that the general public never get to see (as theatre isn't affordable for the average person, myself included) Although I would love to see live theatre plays, the majority of us cannot. It is more for the elite. I am "middle class" but live paycheck to paycheck and can't even afford to go to the movies.

I hear ya. I've definitely had to "hustle" to see shows - use student discounts, buy rush tickets, get in a ticket lottery, etc. And some shows I just had to wait until the hype died down to see it, even if it took years for that to happen. I've definitely seen some amateur versions of shows before the professional touring company one! The good news is that they did record a performance with the original cast and that they will be released some day, so eventually we'll all be able to see it in the comfort of our own homes. And thank god for PBS!

I'm middle class, live paycheck to paycheck, but can budget to see shows. I may not get to see a bunch of Broadway productions, but I see a lot of theater locally which can be just as good but cheaper. :)

Remember that there is good theater at every level. There are very good live shows put on by the drama departments of community colleges. Cities put on free shows in the park. See if there is an opportunity near you to see something good but within your budget!

I live outside the US/UK and it's unlikely that I'll ever get to see the musical on Broadway anytime soon, but the cast album alone made me fall in love with the show and the story. It was intentionally designed that way- Lin has mentioned before that cast albums were how he got into musicals when he was younger, when he too could not afford to go to all these big shows. Broadway is expensive (with good reason, production costs are enormous), but good theatre doesn't have to be. I think we need to do away with the idea that theatre is "elite" - depending on where you live, there's a high chance that you can find affordable play tickets for local shows, or even free public theatre.

Art when it’s fresh is always inaccessible to all. As time goes on the show will be available for local and small scale performance, and the music itself is free on RU-vid. Just because not everyone can see it immediately doesn’t mean it isn’t worthy of praise and discussion. Local theater is very inexpensive.

Whatever happened to the idea of recognizing someone for their lifetime body of work? This cheapens the award immensely.
@rachaelmarks2
@rachaelmarks2 5 лет назад
jr* T No it’s absolutely doesn’t. While it has been very recent, this show has been regarded as an American masterpiece overnight because of its impact, and the award was inevitable. That is worthy.
@wendyweaver8749
@wendyweaver8749 5 лет назад
jr* T - The creators of Hamilton received a special award, not the normal lifetime achievement award AND the four creators were not seated with the four lifetime award recipients: they were in a section on the main floor. It is similar to the Oscars where special awards are made on a periodic basis, either named awards or for unique achievements.
@sueprice3315
@sueprice3315 4 года назад
I never heard this was a lifetime achievement award. The Kennedy Center's page bears this out: The Honors recipients recognized for their contributions to American culture through the performing arts-whether in music, dance, theater, opera, motion pictures, or television-are confirmed by the Executive Committee of the Center's Board of Trustees. The primary criterion in the selection process is excellence.

Such B.S. that they got the Kennedy Center Honors. It's supposed to represent an artist's body of work. Basically it was just a way to get people to watch the broadcast.
@ric7044
@ric7044 6 месяцев назад
Well, to their point on the piece, they didn't get one of the "body of work" prizes. They got a special prize. That's why they were sitting down in the audience, not up there with the other honorees. Did the show create a prize for them just to get a higher audience? Yes. Do I care? Not even a little, because they DO deserve it
