In this video, I will be showing you the chisels I use regularly, also my hammers and a little look at my style of stone carving.
The Stone Ranger is a community where we do lots of stone carving, mainly lettering and dry stone walling, among other stone projects, aside from my full-time job as the Volunteer and Community Ranger at the Peak District National Park.
Please feel free to reach out if I can help you in any way or if you would like to contribute on a video.

I've been going back and watching so many of your videos, I love the work, the explanations, and the attitude about being self-taught; which is my plan! If you wouldn't mind I have a couple of questions. I have some squared and polished pieces of slate tile leftover from a job I had done a couple of years ago, but I have many, many pieces of scrap slate left over from an old walkway that are random colors, shapes and thicknesses with chipped edges. What do you use to cut slate? I think you've mentioned a saw in some videos, what kind of saw do you use?

Hi Dan, I hope you are well, and thank you for watching the channel. Cutting slate, I have a saw called a tiger saw, which is a large stone-cutting saw. But before I got my hands on one, I would cut slate with a simple £40 B&Q tile cutter before upgrading it to a bench tile cutter for around £250, Both worked great. If you are planning on learning more, and I can help in any way, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you. I went to a Traditional Skills Fair in Gloucester and asked about stone I could use for the bird bath. The Mason recommended Portland stone and suggested the chisels I could buy for lettering - tungsten tipped in a range of widths. What do you think about the choice of stone and if I can only afford one chisel and a dummy what width would you recommend for small lettering prob’ no more than 40mm high?

Another great video! I'm trying to learn letter carving, and having trouble with chisel angle and direction. If you can talk about that more it would really help us that are learning from you. Lastly, if you can let us know the size/height of the letters you are carving that would be helpful too.

Hey , I’m looking to buy some carbide lettering chisels. I can’t understand where you said to buy the chisels. I’m from America. My brother recently passed away and I want to carve a tombstone for him in Slate. Can you recommend some carbide slate carving chisels? I’d really appreciate it.

Hi Jeremiahmccutcheon, sorry it has taken some time to reply. It's very sad news about your brother, but it sounds like you are a good brother wanting to carve something for him. I have a lot of respect for that. If you are looking for a good couple of chisels to start with, I would recommend 6mm and 8mm tungsten tipped chisels from a company called Southern Stone Limited. It's a lovely family-run business. You can tell them Matty from RU-vid recommended them. They will work great for both stone and slate. I hope this helps.

Hi matey, just stumbled on your channel, I’m looking to get into stone carving and just wondering if you offer any beginner courses. I’ve been looking at a company called amerton art studio that offer courses in Tamworth and Wolverhampton, love the work you do, Ron

Hi Ron, I am sorry at the moment, I am really busy with my Peak Park Conservation Work, but when I hit the correct criteria, I am considering doing a live tutorial where we can carve together over RU-vid live every fortnight. Thank you for watching & supporting the channel. 👍
