In this video I am carving a house sign for a customer at Sladen Slables. I am carving on a piece of Derbyshire gritstone using hammer and chisel. I will be going through each stage to show how this sign is made.
These videos are made as both a brief tutorial and for our customers to watch the progress of their orders.

My father is a woodcarver for the local Native American tribe, so I've always had a real appreciation what people can do with a hammer and chisel. Thinking about picking up a chisel myself and trying my hand at stone carvings like you have done. Great work, man!

It’s something called a Cricut Maker 2, a great machine. It does take some learning, but it’s great when you get your head around it. It was a game-changer when I ran the business.

Can you confirm the type of stone being cut please. Sounded like "Breton stone". Just can't hear what was being said because of the massive piercing clanging. 50 Years in sheet metal and heavy steel fab. Thanks.

Hi Don, firstly, thank you for watching You got it rights the stone is from a quarry in Derbyshire called Bretton moor. It’s a lovely stone very nice consistent grain

Thanks very much. Greatly appreciated. I've re located to Devon and found some inch thick Delabole slate in the garden. So tried my hand at a house name. That stuff is very odd. I nearly drilled right through it in a flash as I tried to add a dot to a serif tail on an R. SUPER SOFT. But when cutting with my chisel(1/2 wide but sharp. Must get proper chisels), it doesn't go Chk Chk Chk, It goes CLANG CLANG CLANG! and does not cut fine. Ragged edges as it flakes out. Hey ho. Its all I've got and it's free and I'm learning. That's why I wanted to know what you're using. Painting discipline also noted.👍 Thank you. Liked and subscribed Don.

How long did it take to do the carving itself? Amazing work.

I would like to carve this sign during a working day and have some time left over to start the next project or wrap some customers orders. So around 5/6 hours
