There’s nothing better when you get a new plane or even your first plane, and you sharpen and set it up and fiddle around with it and finally get a buttery smooth paper thin shaving. One of the best feelings in woodworking

I see lots of videos on how to set up a plane, but would really appreciate a video on trouble shooting when in use. Sometimes I get pretty shavings, but sometimes dust and sometimes ugly shavings etc. I’m trying to figure out what adjustments lead to better results or how to read a problem, but don’t have any experienced woodworkers available. Would love to have a video on actual use and diagnosing different causes of poor results.

I have 2 issues: 1. For my blade to be centered, my lateral adjustment lever has to be at 50% left. If the LAL is centered the blade is skewed. Not sure how to fix that. 2. I get a beautiful ribbon shaving on 1 side of the work piece,(in this example, I'm planing 8/4 Maple side grain), but on the other side i get shredded ribbons. It doesn't seem to be an obvious issue with the blade. I will try the finer adjustments you've laid out in this video. Thank you Rob

Hi Rob, thank you for sharing your hand planing skills with us. Thanks to this I have mastered to work without sandpaper to finish off the surface I have a question about how to back off the blade in tiny increments the right way: Do I turn the ajuster knop slightly and let the blade come back on its own at the next pass ? Or do I turn the ajuster through the dead zone until the yoke touches the backside of the blade slot, give it a slightly more, then back until de yoke touches the front side of the bladeslot again? I’m allways in doubt about this one….. Thanks in advance, Ronald from the Netherlands

I loved that comment right at the end about it being very relaxing, How many people sharpen a plane blade and then make more shaving than they needed to test the set up just for the pleasure of it? There have been times I've made shavings even without sharpening as an excuse. It's just so satisfying.

Thanks for the tip on the lateral adjustment. I sometime get confused as to which way the blade will move in the heat of the moment, but by now squeezing the lever instead of just moving it, my thumb or finger on the blade top lets me know which way I'm intending to move the blade about the pivot point. That, along with the added fine adjustment you mentioned, is a good technique.

I was really surprised at the feel when you said you could feel snipe. I practiced for 4 hours on some walnut and maple for a checker board. I thought the wood out of the planer would be flat, but when hand planing I could feel the blade skip on the unseen snipe.I was using a new veritas 62. But will eventually get a WR. 5-1/2 now That I feel how wonderful the surface feels. It’s like glass. Who knew? I got the 62 at the advice the screws keep it perfectly aligned on the veritas. But you have proven the 5-1/2 should be my first go to plane. Thanks Rob and Jake.

I love the way you plane and the fine shavings it produces. How would you attack a bevel up plane? Thanks!
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
I much prefer bevel down planes because they are so much easier to adjust than bevel up. The principles are the same (blade parallel to the sole, small projection). Depending on the plane you have, you may not have a left / right adjuster. If not use a small brass hammer to tap the blade left or right. Also, since there is no frog on a bevel up, as you adjust the blade in or out the whole assembly may loosen up and fall out. If that happens you just have to replace and tighten it in a slightly different position

Liked, and shared! I really (serious question) want to know what you do with the shavings... I'm about to order some planes from you, but I'm only set up for dust collection for my power tools - I can't use shavings for mulch, can I? Or in a composter? Or do you burn them? Or compress them and turn them into pellets for cat litter? So many questions, so little time! One of the reasons I'm asking is because I'm considering doing some planing inside the house - I can't work outside (in my uninsulated garage) in the winter, but I could bring my bench into the house - so, if I prepare (mill) a whole lot of lumber projects at the same time, in the garage, during warmer weather, using my power tools (table saw, thickness planer, etc) but then don't finish them, I could finish them all with the 5 1/2 (and the low angle block plane) that I'm about to order from you - in the house! But I need to figure out what to do with the shavings.. I would be doing it in the dining room, which has a fireplace, so there's that, but um... uncompressed, I think that would be a bad thing - they'd just go up in a ball of flame all at once...

@RobCosmanWoodworking

When planing an edge, DO NOT use the knob. Place your thumb in front of or behind the knob applying downward pressure. Your fingers curl up acting as a fence. Use the knob when planing a board's face.

Not trolling, just glad to see that even for seasoned pros it can take a bit of time to get that blade parallel. Sometimes I drive myself nuts getting an edge square to the face. No but the scratches or polish from that bevel MUST extend all the way to the cutting edge for the entire length of the cutting edge
@vkbellis
@vkbellis 4 года назад
Thank you for this video Rob. One thing that could be expanded upon: when the chip breaker and blade aren't perfectly matched. Not everybody will have the super thick cutting iron (and widened mouth sole) but rather the cutting iron that came with their plane from the Tool Barn, yard sale, or eBay find. @ about 1:04 - 1:07 into this clip the word light gets introduced, but the "touches up front", co-planar along the entire width of the cutting iron isn't always such a perfect marriage. Some cutting irons and chip breakers seem more fussy (for whatever reasons) than others. Also, another area that could be expanded upon is where that 1/32" from the end gets measured (@ about 1:32-1:33) when there is any camber (arc) in the edge of the cutting iron; e.g., 1/32" from the outer corner.
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
Good video idea. I am just not a fan of folks using the original tool barn blade that came with the older tools. In my experience teaching students, Most people cannot get success with them regardless of what some you-tubers say. In fact I NEVER recommend keeping the original blade. Its just not worth it. I think that if you want good results you need a quality blade and good sharpening equipment. My niche is not how to teach folks to take antique planes and make them work. I leave that realm to others.

Hello! My fave Christmas gift this year was a #4 Stanley Sweetheart plane and I'm THRILLED. I'm trying to get things set up perfectly, but this is my first experience with a bench plane (I have a block plane, too, but it's obviously a bit different). Is it a true statement to say that you never really FULLY tighten the lever cap piece? I notice that if I DO tighten it completely, I can no longer move the lateral adjuster and it's also really difficult to turn the blade depth adjustment knob. However, the alternative leaves me with a sloppy, floppy depth adjustment knob and a blade that won't stay parallel to the sole. Is it about finding a happy medium tightness level? Thanks for any advice and thanks for all of these helpful videos...they make a huge difference.
@dzee9481
@dzee9481 3 года назад
Rob , the edge of the wood you are testing the blade being level with the sole of the plane, what if the wood is not square or beveled, in other words if the wood piece is slightly beveled, the blade would be cutting out that high point of the edge of wood. You have to keep planing till the wood is level with the plane?

Thank you so much for what you do. Great instruction. I am trying to get the free hand method down. I go between free-hand and Tormek. Tormek is far too slow, but I feel like I have more control. When you hollow grind the primary bevel, do you take it all the way to the edge and then do the secondary/tertiary process?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
Typically you do not take the grind 100% to the cutting edge, in order to prevent burning the thin edge. I go maybe 95-97 % to the edge. Then i do my normal sharpening procedure starting on the 1000 diamond stone.

I currently camber my blade (Charlesworth), I find it helps when I have planed too far on one side of an edge. I put the high center spot where the wood is high, and take a pass. How do you adjust for a high side (out of square to face) if the blade is straight across? Do you use more pressure on the high side, or do you tilt the blade with the lateral adjust lever (leever :)), or what? Thanks for video, look forward to hearing when you move the frog forward.
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
Paul, the strategy with a straight blade, is to use the fact that the mouth of the plane does not extend all all the way to the edge of the sole. Lets say the left side of the board edge was high. Then I would hold my plane so that he right side is flush with the right edge and take a couple of passes. This way there is a strip on the right side that does not get planed (there is no blade there). Once I bring the left side down, I go back to planing in the center of the plane. Then test for flatness

You use the frog to move the blade closer or farther away from the forward edge of the throat. The more difficult the grain, the more tear out you experience the closer to the throat you move the blade. Up to the thickness of the shaving.

Hey Rob! I'm an enormous fan of your channel and your products. Just providing some feedback which I hope you don't take personally! I think the new intro style is OK, but I'm not a big fan of the new thumbnails and somewhat click-baity titles of the videos. Of course if it brings you more views, more awareness for the PHP, and/or more income into your store then by all means please keep doing it! Just wanted to throw in my two cents. What specifically do you mean by "Adjusting the gap?"
@738polarbear
@738polarbear 4 года назад
There should be NIL gap between blade and chip breaker . The Chip breaker should mate perfectlyto the iron .Sometomes with old Stanley planes the chip breaker or cap iron can be bent ,particularly if its the type with the bump on it . bend it in a vice and then use a stone or diamond plate to give the chip breaker a perfectly flat finish on the edge that contacts the plane iron.BTW ,when flattening the edge of the cap iron do it horizontally and drop the cap iron down from level by about 15 degrees.. Hope this info helps.

Thanks a lot! Any thoughts on what are the pros of a bevel up plane? They exist for a reason. Thoughts on the Japanese style? I have the woodriver low angle with a 25 and 40 degree blades, don't have any other plane but I'd like your thoughts on what to experiment next. At the time of the purchase it seemed like the best for the money. The adjustable throat allow for scrub plane configuration by opening it, and smoothing configuration for difficult grains with a closed mouth with the 40 degree blade. That was my reasoning; very interested in your point of view.
@1deerndingo
@1deerndingo 4 года назад
Roger, don't tell Rob, but I have a low angle jack plane (LAJP) . I use it as a go to plane for many of the jobs I need to do. I got it before bumping into Rob's youtubes. And Rob is exactly right about them. They don't really do any more than a well adjusted, really sharp well designed Bayley style jack plane can do (Wood River, Veritas, Lie_Nielsen). Only thing is a Bayley plane is so much easier to adjust as you go and has a bit more weight to it to assist with planing. Many people speak of having a few blades with different grinds for different jobs on a LAJP, but there is no reason you can't do the same with a "normal" jack plane. The throat on a LAJP is much easier to adjust on the LAJP but you can adjust it on a normal plane also. It is a bit more time consuming but how often do you need to do it. I like my LAJP, but if I had my time over I'd buy a 5 1/2 and a few extra blades and maybe be even happier.
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
Deerdingo said it well. I would only adjust him in one statement, go with a bedrock style plane not a Bailey style. Bedrocks have the better frog. I find that with modern planes and metals you can have a lot less planes than in the decades past. I use my 5-1/2 WoodRiver for 85% of my planing. I don’t need a smoother, i use my 5-1/2. I do reach for my # 7 the second most - 10% ??? Of the time

I have the no4 premium plane from Stanley, the cap iron doesn’t have a screw it’s a knob used for finger tight adjustment, it’s a pain to set up and I think my blade moves after a heavy hit on a knot, also the adjustment lever which has it’s on locking knob doesn’t seem to lock that well, I’m thinking this is because the cap iron knob needs to be tighter after watching this . Do you know if another style screw from a different plane. One with a driver slot would fit? And where I could get one in the UK. Thanks for all your hard work on the videos

You mean the edge of the blade is not square to its side? If so the answer is yes. The cutting edge must be set parallel to the sole. The lateral adjustment will let you compensate for a blade cutting edge that is not square to the blade’s side, up to a point. At some point you need to square up the cutting edge to the side....but thats another video.

Does the flatness of the board you are planing impact the set up process?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
Not at all, however if your wood is really wonky then you need to start with a scrub plane to flatten it out. After that you transition to a regular plane. You would continue flatting by taking thick shavings and sneaking up on a thin shaving.

So how much do you have to turn the blade advance knob once it start to feel like it's going to cut. I keep messing up there, mine it's not cutting, it's not cutting and then suddenly cuts way too much. Am I advancing the blade too much? Feels like I'm making very small adjustments.

Rob, do you oil your planes (with Jojoba or other oils)? If a plane has been previously oiled, do you have to thoroughly remove the oil before using -- or is a simple wipe sufficient? What do you do about rust spots appearing on a newly purchased quality plane? Will your "sock" help prevent rust spots?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
Good questions. Any light oil will work and you don’t have to remove one to change oils. I use camellia oil but jojoba is perfect, even 3 in 1 oil works. If you have a rust issue do this: always brush off the dust from your plane after use (use a small paint brush), lightly oil it. Yes plane socks help and work too. Buy a medium grit rust eraser (robcosman.com) to erase any rust that shows up. Keep your planes in a closed container with desiccant inside.

what kind of wood are you using to get that kind of a shaving?
@Mike.DeNinno
@Mike.DeNinno 4 года назад
Rob, a trick that I learned for adjusting the blade parallel is as follows : instead of running the plane over the wood, I use a small narrow piece of wood that I run along the sole of the plane. When it just barely catches on each side, it is parallel and ready for planing. What do you think about this method?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 года назад
That is a method my good friend David Charlesworth teaches and uses. Its a good method. I find I can reach my initial parallel by eye faster than with a little piece of wood. Regardless, when you start planing you still must "read" the shaving and adjust the blade. Thus the first parallel setting is a preliminary setting, just get it done and move on to reading a shaving.
@travisbuildsthis8673
@travisbuildsthis8673 Год назад
Question…. When you’re seeing heavier shavings to one side and adjusting, I’m assuming that is only when you are planing already squared stock. If the surface isn’t square, I need to get the blade as parallel to the sole as possible and plane down until I show a full shaving and then check for square? Thanks!
