No sarcasm here: As a middle-aged male, I very much appreciate not only this helpful tutorial but the fact that you speak to me like a 4-year-old so I don't get frustrated and break things.
Yeah this lady is a goddess for speaking like she does, otherwise I would have thrown these shorts away because I was getting frustrated as shit. And when I say thrown them away I mean I'd have burn the bastard.
I am 65 years old. I've been an adult education teacher most of my life. I've seen thousands of teachers and communicators. I can confidently say that you are a great teacher. You have the left-brain aptitude to understand the technical aspects of what you teach, and the right-brain talent to communicate so regular human beings can understand it. Great work!!!
Fantastic tutorial! Just sewed my first button at 52yrs old. I showed my wife my accomplishment and when when she couldn't tell which button was my work vs. the factory I felt as proud as a kid who just tied his own shoes for the first time. :)
I come back here anytime I need to sew a button. I immediately recognize the tutorial by the pink fabric and the huge button. And the adorable accent!! Thanks for your clear instruction! It's easy to follow but not in a patronizing manner. And it's to the point
Im 24, heading off to basic training tomorrow in the Army. They told me Im gonna need to know how to sew a button in case they fall off my uniform. This video saved me lol I can fight a war but dont know how to sew a button, I mean I know now
Just sewed a button on my bdu's. Original issues buttons weren't made with a proper shank/wrap around 3:25 , guaranteeing that I would eventually need to learn how to do it right on my own.
THANK YOU! Nearly 55 yrs. old and sewed my first button ever! Using the giant sized button was GREAT. Save me from throwing away my shorts. Yes...would have thrown them out. :( Oh, and I found myself saying "dolphin up and dolphin down!"
Thank you genuinely. Your verbal description corresponds perfectly with the visual, and your metaphors are memorable. Your tutorial saw me thru the crisis of reattaching a button to the cuff of my favorite work shirt, allowing me to feel that the accomplishment was, in part, mine.
Thank you so much for this nice, easy tutorial for those of us who’ve never done this before. Simple language and super huge button for demonstration was a big help!! 🙌🏻
"True that"! I mean just because a guy is single doesn't mean he can't ask his mom, sister, grandma, or aunt. Plus we should't assume/stereotype all women as knowing how to sew.
Haha! * reading previous comments * Im a single man as well in my early 30 and need to sew a button (actually six) for the first time in my life; and here I am! Have it explained as if I were four years old together with the visualisation of a oversized button really got rid of my anxiety for the task. Tomorrow Im going to dolphin my way up and down. Thanks!
I was gonna gripe about the instructor teaching me like I'm a child but I'm a 29 year old man that doesn't know how to sew a button on so I guess it's alright.
The kind of voice that would say "Now make sure you don't stab yourself in the eye with the needle !" but to be fair... probably better to know that than not.
Thank you thank you thank you! I'm 66 years old and had never sewed a button before and thanks to your awesome how-to lesson here I followed right along with you and got it done. I'm a tall guy at 6'7" and have big hands and I have always struggled doing intricate things like this. Your idea of using the big oversized button for your demo was brilliant. Thanks again!
just sewed on my first button and am feeling super proud of myself after giving up on a few tutorials before I found yours. You're a great teacher! Thank you!
NICKI!! You are a godsend. I'm a useless 30-something and I've been walking around with a broken shorts button for ages now. But thanks to you it's fixed! Best guide currently out there. Short and to the point. Thanks!!
I used to sew little garments for my dolls back when I was a little kid, and I had learned really rudimentary stuff from my grandma. Now that she's old and unable to sew much, I really appreciate this type of tutorial. It brings me back but also makes me feel as capable as a bright little girl again. Thank you so much 💗
Thanks Nikki. I am a 70 year old Brit who has never needed to sew on a button, as my wife has always done it for me in the past, but your tutorial was perfect for an old geezer who was never shown how. Stay safe. Keith
I'm 55 years old and I just repaired my own shorts thanks to this. I feel like one of the great mysteries of the cosmos has been unlocked for me! Right, I'm off to build my own space rocket next!
Somme years passed without a button falling off, until some days ago. I come again to this wonderful video for the xth time and not only I learn (again) how to sew, but have some laughs with the comments. Much respect for you Nicki.
THANK YOU NICKI BECAUSE OF THIS INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO I WAS ABLE TO SEW THE ABSOLUTE SHIT OUT OF A BUTTON ON MY SWEATER AND THE SLEEVE IS NO LONGER FLOPPY AND HOMELESS LOOKING GOD BLESS YOU MS CALLAHAN MY SWEATER AND I THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Re: Zero's comment: Ditto! I'm a 62 year old man with arthritis and neuralgia, and I never had to rewind. I stopped a couple of times to catch up, but I could see it all so clearly. The giant button is a brilliant idea. Thank you.
I am a 58 year old man who just sewed on my first button thanks to your tutorial. My wife is very busy and I hate to aggravate her with doing it for me even though I know she would. I used to say that I think every man should learn to play an instrument, sing a little and dance. I think now I'm going to add sew on a button as well LOL.
Thank you so much for making this video. I can build a house...... My first attempt at sewing on a button left me fashioning suspenders out of some bungee cords at work....🙄
I LOVE her bossy commanding tone of voice. It somehow resonates better when you are tying to learn something. No fakeness. Its like she loves you and pissed you aren't listening better. Can you teach me about everything else in life please? lol
Thanks, this is excellent. Very clearly explained at exactly the level of simplicity needed for someone with as little natural dexterity as myself...! I now have an odd sense of achievement at having put a button back on some jeans : )
Thank you you're life saver! Prom is this weekend, and I haven't worn this vest since the beginning of the school year when I still would Wear my suit and trench-coat to cope with people leaving me. And the last time I wore it I lost another friend and angrily took off my vest and pulled the button clean off. But shortly after that I met this girl who gets me more than anyone I've ever met in a really long time, and I didn't feel like I needed the suit and trench-coat anymore, I didn't need to look good or be mysterious to feel "normal", or to stand out and hide at the same time. About a week ago I asked her to prom. I've never wanted to be a better person for anyone in the way I do for her, I asked her out in a traditional cheesy promposal which I'd never do, I made sure she was comfortable with going with me, I found a group and planned some things to help her enjoy the experience, like we're going to hang out with her family before so she doesn't feel like she's losing time or leaving anyone to be unseen or unnoticed. I asked my mom to make her a corsage, it's a dragon snap and teal flower silk corsage so that she could keep it forever, I'm not very good at making stuff like that lol. And I'm buying a seafoam bowtie so I can match my date, she loves teal, turquoise, and apparently seafoam. And I bought the tickets. It's not very evident because you don't know me personally but I wouldn't usually go this far for anyone. And I fixed my vest all by myself, well I guess not all by myself, cause I looked up how to fix a button, but I've never successfully done that before. She's my best friend, and I want to give her something as amazing as she is. And with your help I think I might be able to accomplish that. She's my favorite person in the whole world and she's special to me and because of you I'm gonna be able to make her feel genuinely special. Thank you!
I’m fifteen and I needed to sew on two buttons, duh And I just love how it’s such a simplistic video, but there are 3 million views on it!! Like you have made an impact to millions, thank you so much 😊
Thank goodness for RU-vid!! It is great that one can finally learn useful skills that many family members are experts at, but never want to teach no matter how many times one asks.
Thanks for this tutorial, I watch it every time I'm about to sew a button. As I don't sew very often I always forget how to do the last step, making the stitches and loops on the back to finish it. This video and the huge button always reminds me! :)
Thank you SO MUCH for using the giant button! I can't believe I've procrastinated for weeks on fixing something that really takes less than 10 minutes. So helpful.
Thank you for this. I know you may not be reading these comments anymore. But you’ve taught me something that I feel like my mother has tried to teach me several times. Now to go fix all the buttons in the house.
No, I definitely needed the dolphin analogy to fully understand the video, without it I would have been floundering helplessly. She counted four stitches, I wish she could have help up the number of fingers equivalent to four. My only other observation would be I wished she really explained how to tell the difference between the top and bottom of an needle, another fish analogy may have sufficed to explain the correct orientation.
Yeah, it's obvious she teaches this shit for a living. Mnemonics and shit help you remember. Do you complain about the "righty tighty, lefty loosey" thing too?
Came here because I started getting into military surplus gear. You could teach the czech a thing or two on buttons haha. Simply amazing. Thank you for the help! Had a button on a sleeve fall off as soon as I pulled it from the box.
Merry Christmas and thanks for that great tutorial. Im a 57 year old guy, and the only thing Ive ever sewn just turned 22. I did manage to get this button on so tight it was hard to get through the button hole:) Thanks so much for the huge button also, I used my readers and a magnifying glass but got er done! :D
12 years later and I clicked on this video, it was the thumb nail of the giant button that made me click and then to top it of a clear explanation as well. Thank you!
DrFlox Easy solution. Drill two more you could even try punching the holes with your machine depending on the material of the button this has worked. You sometimes break a needle tho
My bad home economics teacher showed us this video when teaching how to sew a button she could have demonstrated herself! I also got into trouble for doing a little mistake last lesson!
As a student who can’t always rely on buying new clothes, it’s a life-saver. I think I grew a liking to sewing. Helped me a lot to fix my backpack and various clothes based objects.
Ms. Callahan thank you so much for this tutorial, I know its been 12 years since you uploaded it but I genuinely appreciate this. thirty year old male who just had to resew his work pants button back on. its so secure now it should last me a while!
Er... You're supposed to end the stitch on two holes, then make another one on the other two, so that if the thread should break, it's not going to lose the button, surely.
Are you saying this person showed us how to do a piece of shit sewing job? I was very content with this tutorial and the button I just put on my dress pants but now......
22 year with no patients the fact that you taught me without me getting frustrated at any point makes me smile thank you so much you’re a great teacher!!
This was not done correctly - you need to create spacing between the button and fabric to add a shank that actually keeps the button elevated above the fabric. The procedure in this video just sews the button flush with the fabric - the shank does nothing when sewn this way.
Like I always say. KISS (Keep it simple, Stupid) My button work just fine. I’m not going to become a seamstress, just a Man that needs a button attached.
Thanks so much Nicki! I have very bad hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills and I never learned how to sew growing up, but your explanation was clear enough that I could persevere and save my favorite dress shirt. You're a hero!
The last time I tried to sew a button on clothing was in 1993. It didn't work out so well. Now some near 30 years later I need to do it again. I'm glad I didn't just try to figure it out. Thank goodness for RU-vid. I speak for many grown men everywhere, Thank you!
