They are REALLY smart indeed! I have a 6 month old and he is incredible. Comes right up to me, in my hand to eat. Watches me, stays out when I'm around most of the time. Occasionally he bolts but usually chill. Highly recommend, my fave species so far.

I love Jeweled Lacertas so much, and I'm always shocked they are still not more popular. I had one years ago, but lost him in a breakup, because he was technically my ex's, but I finally have one again. They really are like tiny monitors, even in how they eat. I think building that trust and respect is so so important, too, and I went into it knowing I might never get to hold him like I do my beardie. I actually think it's easier once they're a little bigger, because as babies they just seem so fragile!

When i got my two year old male jewelled lacerta he didn't trust me, came only for food and ran away every time, so i decided to catch him and hold to teach him I'm not a threat. After month or two we did it, and he remember it even after brumation. Of course, for the younger animals it's better for building trust, but for older ones it isn's always possible

I’ve had my jeweled lacerta for going on 2 years. I’ve tong fed my female from the beginning. I also spend about 10 minutes a day with my hand in there with my fingers curled into a fist because she still thinks they are dinner. After all this time the most I can do is gently touch her. I always put my bare arm in there with no problems, but keep my fingers curled into a fist. She once got out and we did have to grab her and I can guarantee you don’t want to experience their bite. They can really chomp down

I’ve seen the way he bites the tongs and I know I don’t want that to be my hand! 😂 thank you so much for sharing your experience though. It’s so funny you have to keep your hand in a fist too! Wasn’t sure if mine was the only one wanting to snack on fingers lol

Awesome to see your little guy again! He looks so goegeous!!! I've had mine for a few months now. When I first got him I almost exclusively hand fed him without tongs which got him to walk up onto me and that was fun, but he started associating my hand with food so he started nibbling me almost every time (he's only a few months old so it was more startling than painful). Then he got out and that was a hole mess and after that he lost all trust in me. After that I completely reworked my time with him, since I was basically starting over in building a relationship with this lizard. The shirt thing I did and I think it helped a lot. I put mine on top of the hide he uses the most and the next day I came in to see him basking on my shirt. DEFINITELY recommend target training! Since doing that he's not been associating my hands with food and has rarely bitten me since. I tong feed him most meals after he engages with his target, and I try to get him to at least crawl up onto the back of my hand to get a bug from me to try to build trust with him. Now I'm at the point where I can rest my hand (without food) in his enclosure and he'll come up and sit on my hand for a little (so far just a few minutes). He's still not extremely comfy with me, and some days he doesn't really wanna interact at all, but he's definitely more okay with me just being around him and in his space.

Thank you for your insight! I have to look into target training! I haven’t seen much of it before!

It seems like you are doing a good job of taming him down / making him comfortable with you! It does take time. I am working on taming down a steaming tea kettle, I mean a hissing Argentine, right now, so I know it takes time and patience. Seems like you've made a good start.

There's a channel called Tokek Tokek that tames tokays. It's incredible. He's just talented. There another channel, really old, called The Reptile Whisperer, and she tames hers too, and they're puppy dog tame. Her four or five year old daughter handles them. Great video, love your channel :)

I have a question for you not on the lacerta but my enclosure 😅. there's 2 sm cracks on the bottom , my bf sealed them with aquarium sealer .seems to be fine. should I hot glue over it as extra assurance n or put heat tape over it ??
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 8 месяцев назад
What is your enclosure made out of? The sealant alone should do the job! Using a glue might be dangerous if your reptile accidentally consumes it, so I would avoid that.

My BTS does not like being handled after 3 years but, I put him in my chair while I watch TV and let just crawl all over me and the chair. Eventually he settles down next to me and goes to sleep and does not want go back in his enclosure lol.

@@reptiliangarden That I understand. But both gender of this species are just stunningly beautiful. And to comment on the handling and building trust. Here's are mine tips after 7 years owning timon lepidus. My best advice is to be patient and do it on their terms. They are smart lizards that will remember any negative interactions. So continue to do what you are doing and end every handling season with a positive experience. My male Spinky was like that for a long time before he decided that it was not scary to be picked up. He still likes to crawl up my arm by himself, but don't mind me picking him up.
