Don't quote me on this but I believe it increases air speed but reduce thrust power. Kind of like your water hose when you put your thumb on the end. Same amount of water but higher speed, but increase fuel consumption because of pressure build up.
@aspct.
@aspct. 4 года назад
If I recall correctly when the throttle is low, the amount of air leaving the nozzle is not a lot so a narrow nozzle is best for performance. When the throttle is high on the other hand a lot more air leaves the nozzle thus to get the peak performance out of the engine the nozzle would need to be wider so the air can exit the engine freely without circulating inside. Low throttle = not much air, narrow nozzle; high throttle = a lot of air, wide nozzle. Sorry for my bed england and thanks for coming to my ted talk.
@AverageNeighbor

Just look up "nozzle thermodynamics," that should give the answer, basically it increases velcoity of a fluid(air) at the expense of pressure, and can accelerate subsonic fluid to contribute to thrust.

My first reaction is that usually military jets do not have variable nozzles unless the aircraft is supersonic. The idea is to produce a gas flow which matches the speed of the aircraft so that there is effectively zero kinetic energy going into the gas and it all goes into the aircraft. IE if the aircraft is flying at Mach 1.3 the gas needs to leave the nozzle at mach 1.3 so it is realtive to the atmosphere, stationary. The second point is that for a nozzle to be effective there needs to be a gap between the turbine blades and the start of the nozzle. The gap is a function of the diameter of the engine but I don't know the equation for it. My guess would be that at least 10cm would be needed for an engine that size possibly as much as 20cm.
@paulkrimmel6384
@paulkrimmel6384 4 года назад
Gordon Lawrence the nozzle is also there for protection of the engine if you have an afterburner, the pressure in the nozzle would be to high for the engine to work safly so the nozzle opens up when the afterburner is ignited

hrm.... nah. Unless the thing exploded or somebody was an idiot and threw something into the intake, then there's no chance of a supersonic projectile impacting somebody. Meanwhile firing a rifle or other weapon , even if you were aiming at a target, could easily ricochet to hit you or others. and somebody who is intelligent enough to build a jet engine will know not to throw anything into the intake, so the only danger is catastrophic failure causing an explosion. I don't have the knowledge to calculate how likely that is, but i'd imagine it's on the same level of a house's boiler.

So much greatness in one short clip. I mean, aside from the freaking variable nozzle- 10/10 view, solid grill in foreground, and charred wooden siding on that shed? I can't tell if its Germany or Japan! Anyways, amazing project man. I'm really looking forward to what you do next!

Chayse, that's intense. My country's struggling to make an indiginous jet engine, and yet here you are having made one all by yourself at home. Good work mate! 👍🏼

@Praendy
@Praendy Год назад
Mfg Andy
