kind of surprised that your fishing line lasted for that long. given the heat coming out of the engine it should have melted way sooner, but very awesome concept. kind of curious how the real ones functions!

That's cool, but you re missing half of the nozzle. The convergent part. It's very beautiful work, though.

My first reaction is that usually military jets do not have variable nozzles unless the aircraft is supersonic. The idea is to produce a gas flow which matches the speed of the aircraft so that there is effectively zero kinetic energy going into the gas and it all goes into the aircraft. IE if the aircraft is flying at Mach 1.3 the gas needs to leave the nozzle at mach 1.3 so it is realtive to the atmosphere, stationary. The second point is that for a nozzle to be effective there needs to be a gap between the turbine blades and the start of the nozzle. The gap is a function of the diameter of the engine but I don't know the equation for it. My guess would be that at least 10cm would be needed for an engine that size possibly as much as 20cm.
