I'm using a Silver Black Velvet Brush and these are my colors: fearlessbrush.com/2021/04/17/the-portable-painter-in-action-a-hands-free-watercolor-kit/
My favorite videos is watching you paint outside. I'm having health problems that make me exhausted all the time. But watching these makes it feel like we're out there with you and enjoying the wonderful weather, enjoying your craft . Thankyou !
Love the video, as usual! I have a portable painter and really enjoy the design. I noticed you tucked the clip under the band during use. The metal clip actually fits perfectly ON the band for storage during use. It took me awhile to figure that out :) Just stretch the band a bit and push the clip on- then put the band on the water container.
I get creative advice from you, not the other way around.... I find that I feel like I am spinning in the middle when faced with too many choices (beyond creative) - good and sometimes not so good. But it has worked, when the time is "right" I seem to know what to do - seems to be a matter of time and patience with myself. From what you say it seems to me that you are finding your way. Godspeed Sarah
You inspired me to make several of these diy sketchbooks, I love that I can use the paper i want and best of all it's helped me over my fear of messing up a painting in a sketchbook. If it's too bad, I can just remove it! Thank Sarah for these videos, you have become my biggest inspiration and best tutor!
That's awesome!! Mine is just about full..I think I'm going to make another one soon but try a different binding! I've never been good at sewing though lol
Fantastic review, the Portable painter looks really useful. That aside, your videography is excellent !! Love the drone shots and the painting demos are great. Thanks for sharing
Haha oh god 🤣 it's the worst!! And believe it or not yesterday during a patreon stream, in my studio, a tick was crawling on my hand!!! I could not believe it...I have no idea where it came from except maybe my cats, but it was horrifying 😱😭 I felt cursed by tick demons
I also find that the Portable Painter fits nicely around the arm of my living room armchair for lazy evening painting!😀 And is handy for painting in the car.
I really like watching plein air painting. You give good hints and just the fact that you reinforce the fact that this style of painting is to have fun & enjoy not just in painting a masterpiece. So thanks for taking the time to record this.
I would love to see you do plein air paintings of various Outlander locations!! I would be so jealous! Hoping to visit Scotland in the next year or so!
Es primera vez que veo a un artista incorporar en sus vídeos la búsqueda del lugar que va a pintar. Mostrar esos cautivadores y hermosos paisajes es maravilloso. Eres muy talentosa y agradable. Te felicito bella niña!....me suscribo a tu canal. Greetings from Punta Arenas-Chile.
Your art works are so beautiful!!! I enjoyed so much watching this video. Super inspiring for me!:)) And this view of the sea and cliffs!😍😍😍 Thank you so much for sharing!
Always remember... don't wear dark clothes were you might expect ticks. Also, using DEET and/or wearing clothes pre-treated with permethrin can be beneficial in heavily infested areas.
Love your plein aire painting adventures! Here’s a bucket list item for me- go to Scotland, find Sarah, knock on her door, ask her if I can go with her on her next plein aire journey, bribe her by telling her I will inspect area for ticks before she sits somewhere to paint, sit quietly and paint alongside the master! Thank you for these videos and all the work you put into them!
LOL! I have a better idea: Sarah plans a plein air adventure, everyone meets up for three days of painting at beautiful locations, drinking whiskey and wine, eating fresh foods, painting our hearts out 😁
Ugh, ticks. They really are the bane of many NJ plein air painting locations. Tiny ones= Lyme Disease carriers! Never knew they existed in Scotland. Hopefully not any sort of disease carriers . Safe and painting! I love all you do to help your admirers/fans. You are wonderful.
Your joy and excitement at being back to the coast is so genuine! I was in awe of the wonderful drone footage, just breathtaking! Your art, commentary, and the work you put into your video is much appreciated! Thankyou🙂 (also, I share your feeling regarding ticks, echhhh!)
Thank you so much!! I thought I went a little overboard with the drone this time, but I was SO excited for my first big plein air adventure of the year, and felt it deserved celebration!!
@@SarahBurnsStudio did you film from a drone yourself? That was an awesome addition to the outing! So beautiful! Thank you! I never have heard of the hook on leg rig! Pilots use something similar.
I LOVE your videos! I am grateful that they are long enough to really see what is happening. Your voice is beautiful and relaxed even more of a skill knowing how anxious you are what recording. I am not familiar with Scotland so that is really a treat. I am a very old professional artist and now that I rarely venture outside, I am so grateful that I found you creative work!
Oh Sarah, first the drone, music, and editing are gorgeous. Well done. Waiting for CO to decide it’s not winter to get out and paint. Can’t wait. Finally, oh. My. Gosh. TICKS! When I lived in the mountains they totally were a threat and gave me the heeeeeeeebies!!!!! Love watching you paint😍
This reminds me so much of Beavertail in Rhode Island, and now I'm excited to go out and try painting there soon!💙 Beautiful paintings, thanks for sharing!
For the first time in my life I’m wishing for more thumbs, even to be all thumbs!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 How I love your willingness to take us along! You’ve made this girl’s day, over and over again!!! Thank you so much Sarah!
Great paintings Sarah! I feel you regarding “purists” and agree wholeheartedly to just enjoy the process using whatever medium you need to get your desired result. On another note, purely out of interest, do you feel you prefer the UK to the US or do you get homesick at times?
I miss a lot of things about the US (besides the obvious, friends and family). Colorado was an amazing place to live. The epic Rocky Mountains are hard to beat. Skiing!! Authentic mexican food!! But overall, in terms of lifestyle, landscape, energy, people, I prefer Scotland :)
I remember reviewing the portable painter back when it was still a Kickstarter. Things are better than they used to be. I to.d him that it is too easy to lose the metal lock and I see now they have added a rubber band. He also had half pans that fit inside the slots and they wiggled all over and would come out with the brush. I had to put sticky tack on the back of the pans to hold them in place. My other problem is that I hate half pans. I find it is a good way to ruin my expensive brushes. So I don’t use mine much at all. I think that’s my big drawback. Because I liked the water containers and the ability to rest it on my leg as well. I usually do most of my mixing on the paper so the trays aren’t too big an issue for me. Those were pretty paintings btw. 😁
Fair points! I have been looking at modifications, apparently with a dremel it's easy to grind down the dividers in the mixing area (for a big open mixing area), and even open up the half pan area to full pan or larger wells. I'm intrigued and I might try it, because I love the whole design!
Beautiful view and paintings . Love watching and learning from you.....Brian Ashford has a good video on how to modify portable painter . Enjoy your summer and beaches!!!
I have Scottish ancestry and think it would be fun to visit Scotland, so I appreciate seeing some of the scenery there. Sometimes I follow Scots Willdcamper they go backpacking around Scotland. These days I doubt I will ever make it. Guess I'll have to settle for the CA coast, it looks very similar with the rocky bits out in the water. Edit: Oooohhhh I really love the second painting. colors are just stunning
This was an absolutely beautiful tutorial a lot of information wonderful tips I learned a lot, and your photography left me lost for words !!! I will watch it again. one day love to travel to Scotland. The information you included was very helpful and inspirational. Keep it up girl love it paint on.👏❤️🎨
Wow! Double Wow! It's cold and dreary outside my window, but what a blessing to view this video today. Not only did I have the opportunity to see great art being created, you be gave us an awesome tour of your locale and shared your joy of painting. Thank you so much Sarah!!! PS: Of course I also loved that this was a watercolor video ;o)
I loved this video, thank you. The cinematography was amazing with the dramatic music that perfectly fit the dramatic scenery. Then you painted such beautiful pieces! This video was definitely worth the filming annoyances you had. I think it's one of your best, and now I want to grab my paints and head for the coast. 😊
Absolutely love this video, the painting, the struggle, and how you manage to juggle everything to give such an honest and valuable portrayal of your day. By th way I love the portable painter palettes, thank you so much for introducing them ❤❤
I came across you today for the first time. I loved seeing how you have improved over the years and I’m loving the sea/rocks paintings you are doing. I would find that so hard to do and you make it look so easy. I look forward very much to watching more of your videos.
Your videos get better and better! They must take you so long to edit! I'm a YTuber so I know. But it's really worth it for us viewers! Thank you! Brilliant painting too! 🙂
Thank you so much!! Yes they take quite an effort to edit, but I have discovered a passion for editing/video storytelling. I have to take lots of little breaks because of wrist pain, so I schedule my days in chunks, which helps a lot. Bwt, your art is beautiful! I never seemed to get along with pastel but I find it fascinating.
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thank you! I can't get along with paint and a brush. But I need to resubscribe to your Patreon again and get to grips with gouache! I see from your video you learned to drive on the other side of the road. I'm from the UK and came to the US and did it the other way around!
@@ruthballardart Yea, that takes a lot of practice doesn't it! But now when I see videos of people driving on the opposite side, I'm like THAT LOOKS SO WEIRD!!
I enjoyed this so much. What a beautiful spot! Painting outside is so difficult. I usually just do a quick pencil sketch to get the idea of lights and darks. then take A Picture with my phone.
This has been So Relaxing and Very informative to me! I Loved this whole experience and I Thank You for everything you’ve done! May God Bless you as much as you’ve blessed me, today! I’m going to go out and paint now! I live on the Pacific NW coast in the state of Washington by Seattle. Water is very intimidating to me to paint-& you’ve given me great confidence to try harder!
@@SarahBurnsStudio it truly is! The Humpback and Orca whales are my favorite here, and every now and then, you get a glimpse of them! I have always wanted to visit Scotland- maybe one day! Thanks so Much for your encouraging tutorials. God bless you, Sarah! Happy hiking and sketching and painting!
I just purchased this portable painter for painting outside. We are going on a trip to Cape Breton in Nova Scotia Canada. It has similarities in landscape to Scotland. I’m new to watercolor since October 2020. I love it.
Hi Sarah, I am just down the coast from you, in Angus, what great scenery we have to paint! IAM getting one of these palettes for my birthday. If you don,t like the small mixing wells, do a search of the palette on RU-vid, there are a couple,of videos where the artist has removed some of the dividers between the small wells to make larger ones.
I know this is 2 years late. But. You've done more than a "sketch" here, I think. There's a nicely executed breaking wave as a focal point, beautiful light and shadow in the sea and the rocks and interesting variegated colors everywhere. All it seems to need is some definition/color in the sky and it's a frame-worthy painting. Also useful to know how the Portable Painter works 'in the field'.
Hi Sarah, thank you for Allison the videos and encouragement. Please could you explain you board and watercolourpaper setup. How do you attach your paper to the board, or, is that a block you paint on. Thank you.
I really appreciate the time & effort put into your videos - it has allowed me the privilege of learning how do watercolor painting - at my time & convenience! Your effort is my treasure!!! - thank you so much 🙏
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I have this kit, and I have not used it yet. I didn’t know that it could be placed on your leg like that. That makes me love it more. Keep up the good work!
I know this is an old one but I've just found your channel and enjoy watching it. I'm a watercolor painter and have just taken the huge step of joining a local plein air group. So now I have to figure out if watercolor will work or if I should try to learn acrylic or oil. Your blues are beautiful and I will definitely consider that kit or attaching my kit to a knee board. I cringed along with you with the tick!!!
Thank You for sharing your day. You did a great job on the paintings. I may have to look into purchasing a portable painter kit. Also a drone. They look like such a wonderful way to get beautiful plein air shots without getting yourself maimed and killed.
Definitely an awesome paint kit! If you get a drone, you have to become a certified flyer through the CAA, and register / pay each year. It's easy just don't forget! Also a really helpful app is called UAV Forecast, it tells you temps / wind speed at different elevations which is really important for flying.
I really want to get this palette, the only thing I'm not loving about it is how few colors it can contain. But overall it is great. And thank God ticks stay away from me, even though I live next to a forest, they freak me out too, so I feel you. Would love to do some painting outside not feeling the courage to do that, but I admire how you work.
Great video. I liked how you told us about the shadows and then you froze the picure and used the color picker to show us the shadow colors. Very cool! Also kudos for sticking with it after finding a tick! I would have been out of there! FYI - mosquito spray will keep ticks off you, so you could spray your clothes before you go to places where there are ticks. Also I love the homemade sketchbook with rings! Usually people bind their books and I like the looks but it takes too long for me... Rings are sometimes I'll try.. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoyed watching you paint. I like how you used your palette to catch all the colors of the coast. Scotland ought to hire you to promote Scotland. You do a great job showing the world just how beautiful it is.. I need to get out and start painting plien air again.
I loved this video, even the tick drama ( i would be like that to by the way) great to see that you are normal like the rest of us Sarah ! you so lucky to be near the sea !
