WOW this is the most detailed, in-depth product overview Ive ever seen. So many out there, so few actually profiling finer points. I wish you guys had time to do this for every synth and controller out there!
Thank you guys for always being so thorough with your reviews. I am thoroughly impressed with the features listed here, and I don't expect to have any unwelcome surprises now when I get my hands on it. I was mostly concerned with the sequencer, and you guys were the only ones to actually demonstrate it fully from start to finish. Thank you!
First place to go for very good and tutorial-like reviews. You guys do an excellent job, much more information on this beautiful piece of machinery than on the site of the manufacturer itself. Thank you!
This must be the 500th synth video I've watched, and I still haven't gotten to them all. I thought the Moog One would be "it" for me, it wasn't. Looked at all the usuals, Korg, Yamaha, Arturia. The best sounding synth to me, is the Moog Sub 37. Just, pure awesomness. I've listened to similar ones of course, but nothing with that broad width, growl and authority. Very hard biting in the lows especially. It is..my favorite synth.
Rob is one of the best gear reviewers on you tube he has a talent for explaining detail without getting bogged down in it.. ,!.. Rob B&h needs to give you a proper showroom for instruments, ditch the camera shelves
I have always dreamed of owning a Moog. The sub 37 is destined to be a classic in time, The Bob Moog tribute model. This should always go up in value if you take care of it. Think of it as an investment you can play!
Moog likes to come out with small variant models in limited availability distribution (e.g. the SubSequent 37 CV). When they claim they are only going to produce a thousand units of some limited edition variant, a lot of fence sitters decide they need to run out to Guitar Center or Sweetwater or wherever to snag one before they’re gone. Then six months later another variant is announced.
It would be too powerful honestly. The oscillators are just so frequency rich that anything above two or three voices would just overload almost any frequency spectrum.
Novation is cool - but MOOG is "the daddy of them all" of analog synths and technology." Nothing else really compares, sounds and feels like a MOOG. The whole device performs "vintage". But there are pre-programmed, pre-set locations that can be dialed in on the LCD screen on the top left hand corner with categories like Classic, Bass, Duo,Organ, Misc, Lead, DISTORTED, etc. Classic MOOG Ladder Filter with resonance, MultiDrive, and selectable filter slopes. +B and H You wrote: "Moog is the daddy of them all" Ridiculous statement considering Moog only really make Monophonic synths. I'd take a Prophet 6 or Jupiter 8 any day of a Sub 37. I've been a customer of B and H for years, so not hate, but Moog is just one of many good synth makers.
As far as the commentator, very cool that you are teaching us more then Moog did about the instrument, but for us beginners I wish you would slow down. You know it like your own hands but I am trying to play catch up and find your pace to be WAY TO FAST!
@fooloof Composers and producers who want a good starting point instead of spending 30mins dialing up a sound before ultimately forgetting the direction they were going in.
@fooloof You're right, it takes 30secs to truly utilise 3 x DAHDSR's and why bother anyway, just use a guitar and come back to it later. Why do Moog even include memory for presets anyway? Nobody wants to spend £8K for that convenience recall crap. Presets are for noobs only, must be.
@fooloof No, it's not complicated but presets save time that the industry can't be bothered to afford. Thinking about the Sub 37, you're right, pretty basic stuff. Eight presets would be enough, I'd still rather have a few save spaces available than none. Also, good presets are a great marketing tool if done correctly. Yes, if you want to trawl through presets than a Virus of NI Massive will be fine...Sifting through presets can take just as much effort as creating them yourself.
@fooloof It's not that, we're on a similar page. I'm very tempted to buy a Moog Source at the moment, naturally just for the sound. Couldn't care less what presets it comes with. I'm in no way surprised that you have a Moog to quickly dial up a bass/lead and never use on-board sounds, makes sense to me, I'd do the same. I've just been making a good living creating presets for the last 10 years and constantly have feedback on why and how people use them. Presets are subjective and how people use synthesizers are very individual.
+B and H Moog was left behind long ago. Its only got one great sound and. Thats the bass on records like Michael Jacksons Thriller. For what it is youre paying a premium. Even Yamahas REFACE CS will rip this a new one for sonic palette at a third of the price. And thats 8 note poly so dreamy pads are possible aswell as killer bass and drumkits. What Moogs manufacturers should have done is put out a new polyphonic synth with that can challenge all the big players. Instead theyre stuck on the same limited mono track. Living off the name. And I have to agree with the guy that said the BASS STATION II is just as good. Because he is right. The BASS STATION is basically this in a much neater portable form at a third of the price.
I'm going to respectfully disagree on the BSII point. The Moog oscillators sound a bit better than the BSII. But I do think the BSII is one of the best synths, if not THE best synth, in it's price range. I think you're getting a lot of synth for your money with both keyboards. I get what you're saying. Moog really does need a polyphonic synth, and their current models would make more sense maybe 2-300 bucks cheaper. Good thing is they don't lose value, so you can always sell it.
Bored Af The reface CS is on the same level AND ITS POLYPHONIC. Can produce awesome electro funk type bass and LUSH STRINGS. Special effects etc. Its the most underrated synth ever put on the market which is great. Means I can own two of em for less than 500 bucks.
The reface is not good, With its minikeys and lacking features. The Cs reface is actually based of the much greater Yamaha An1x from the 90s, same sound engine, only that it lacks several great features from the An1x. Another fact anbout the Reface Cs is that its not even an analogue, it is a Virtual analogue or a analog Modeling synth. I own a Moog sub 37 and i also own a Yamaha ex5 which contains a 2 voice polyphonic Version of the An1x and its great, but its not as good as a lead synth as the Sub 37. Dont let all the terrible youtube demos and fatory presets like this fool you. If programmed right it can sound sublime!
+vistacruiser70s I have to disagree. The older can be duplicated on the 37 plus it has OVER THE TOP capabilities.Personally I think it is the BEST Phatty or Synthesizer that they have EVER produced. I could spend a life time discovering it's possibilities. Even the Moog techs are blown away by what they have created!!!! It's all good!I have wanted a Moog since HS and now I have two to spend what little spare time I have on.
rss313 There is no mod. All the indicator lights look yellow on our monitors at B&H and my own Apple display at home. You may need to adjust your viewing screen. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com >Mark
rss313 Looks red here too at 15:17 (not the rest of the video obviously), so not our monitors - definitely the video. That said, I like the yellow anyway on my Sub 37! :)

I recognize the name Moog as a half God or something. That being said, it's not my God. Sure, his synths do sound beastly powerfull. I just keep having issues with paying a few 1000 for a monophonic synth. The Voyager is a cool peace. But that price.... OMG...
Great review very informative! 2 questions though. Is there a regular piano preset on it? Also wondering if it would be possible to create a synth preset on Massive for example then load it into the Moog for further tweaking and vice versa? or is it not possible to save new presets? Thank you!
+electric987789 - Unfortunately, the Moog SUB 37 Tribute Edition Paraphonic Analog Synthesizer does not have a piano setting, nor would it allow one to save his/her own presets. If these are features you are looking for, I would suggest checking out the Yamaha CP4 STAGE - Electronic Stage Piano. If that isn’t quite what you had in mind, I would suggest contacting our Audio Department directly through an email. They would be able to recommend some more options. *Christina* AskAudio@bhphoto.com bhpho.to/1Upffx9
+Morten Lauritsen - Unfortunately, one can’t save settings with the Moog SUB 37 Tribute Edition Paraphonic Analog Synthesizer. It's just like the old one where all one can do is play and experiment. *Christina* AskAudio@bhphoto.com
I have to agree with Craig "An excellent, informative, in-depth review" however to be totally useful without having to hit "Pause" every few seconds it would have been MUCH better if you slowed the pace of the video!!!! It was like the commentator was or SPEED!
Does a Voyager completely encompass a Sub37 and then some? Or are the different birds? (excluding the sequencer arpeggiator functions which we know Voyagers don't have). Thank you.
I would say completely different birds. The Voyager offers more with pot mapping, control voltage in and out, the third oscillator, xya pad, and dual filters. But the Sub37 exceeds at midi syncable modulation with the arpeggiator, sequencer, envelopes (which also have more stages) and lfos (which it has two independent lfo's with more waveforms) I own a Voyager and once you go beyond trying to replicate the old minimoog sounds and what not, you can get some crazy dynamic things going on.
Nice! Funny thing, I got #100 of 100 units made. I had a line on #13 which is my lucky number but I missed out on it. :) Does the mahogany had blue lights? I took apart my mod wheel housing to bend the led back a bit because they were SO bright. Cheers.
This paraphonic synth offers monphonic or paraphonic performance. It is not a stereo device. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com.>Mark
+Rami Shalom But you could add stereo features with a mixer and or software program. Think of the Moog as the source of the sounds, then it is up to you to do the phasing, the stereo effects, etc. on your recording equipment.
