So, what do you think? Is this a genius move, or a strange new take? Let us know your thoughts below!
@AlexJacksonSmith

Don't take this as being "confrontational", it is just your position appears very self-righteous! Why are you of the opinion that there is something wrong with "chimping"? If it was so wrong, why did medium format camera systems have polaroid backs if it wasn't to check the image? Personally I think it has many benefits. Travel photography allows you to check before you leave the venue! Street, Event and Portraiture allows you to prepare in advance with composition and exposure. and so on.... I would be interested how this helps people, as I think especially new people to photography gain. The feedback in terms of what was the effect of a camera choice/setting is more easily correlated if seen virtually real-time! Please explain your view it would be interesting. Alex.,

@@AlexJacksonSmith Sorry I came across like that. In all honesty, I chimp all the time, and encourage a lot of people to do so if it guarantees the shot. I think the read LCD screen and being able to review your shots is one of the finest innovations of photograph every created. When I shot weddings, or worked for clients, I would always refer to the back of the screen, I'm being paid to do a job, and it doesn't matter how I do it, as long as it gets done. However, you still have the EVF, which is another great innovation, and you're able to review and compose shots on that. I think that the ethos of the X-Pro3 is to get you out of your own head, and away from reviewing shots You can see what your exposure is like and your composition through the viewfinder, and I found it relaxing. It's the kind of thing that would make me step back and just shoot. Though i would still go through the screen to ensure I got the shot if necessary. The biggest benefit, I would say, is the drive to push you out and focus on the act of shooting, take risks and get back to framing up and capturing. EVFs make photography easier, in terms of getting your exposure right, so that's a great way for people to learn. In terms of the rear screen, i think that's something that has been compounded by phone photography, and people who are stepping up from phones will likely start taking photos with cameras the same way, from face height and looking at the screen. But we know that exploring angles from lower down can create more dramatic shots Looking through the EVF can sometimes make it more personal and real, and you can be hit by the drama in a way that looking at a rear screen doesn't give you. That's just my thought on it, but as someone who looks, talks and reviews cameras, I'm probably not the pro they're talking about. I had my time, and didn't exactly set the world ablaze! A few clients and weddings works perfectly for me! ;)

I cannot wait to get my hands on one. I see this as my camera for casual and experimental shooting straight to JPEG. Family times, light travel, quick sharing with Cam Remote, play around, find a new “look”. This is a camera to muck around with and get back to making the kinds of “mistakes” that can refresh the rest of the work. I tend to live in the viewfinder on my GFX, so I have no problem with the hidden screen. That concept made sense to me immediately when they announced the design last month. I like the look of the new Classic Negative, and the expanded multiple exposure options will be fun to try. I’m also expecting that a few of these firmware changes will make the transition to my GFX 100. In particular the refined focus stacking will clean up some of my landscap post-processing, and I expect the monochrome toning and some of the other image adjustment options will show up in the menus soon. My camera store rep already knew I wanted one, so my pre-order got posted first thing this morning. I’m only a bit frustrated that based on the Amazon listings, the Duratec finishes won’t show up until mid-December. Nothing we can do about that.

@@waveland That's exactly the kind of passion Fujifilm want this camera to create, and using it really can give you the experience. It's probably going to be used a lot for spontaneous shots, street and documentary too. Living in the viewfinder will give you enough leeway to "see" your shots, and the 90 degree screen position is still very much like your waist level finder, so shooting incognito is still viable. Yes, the Duratect coating is a very labour intensive task to create, so it will likely be a bit of a delay. get one quickly if you want one though, i have a feeling the demand will outstrip the supply.
@waveland

Practical Photography Yes, they will probably be in short supply well into next year. It’s a camera with real character in an era where most products ooze out of a spreadsheet somewhere. Gotta love the quirk. Oh, and I knew there was something I was forgetting with my first post. The in-camera focus limiter is a wonderful addition which they have to bring to the GFX 100 as well. -6 ev focusing? I don’t know if they can push it that far on a large sensor, but hoping for some Fujifilm love on that front as well.

As an x-e3 shooter (with mostly just the evf as being substandard - I am "camera to face shooter and thus like the range-finder layout as it hides me less than SLR-styles) I was confused about this pro3 forever. And yet, over the last few hours seeing it in capable hands, it starts to make more and more sense. I have of course developed this LCD addiction (quick check of exposure and focus to feel "sure"). Some of us remember that time when an entire roll of film came back totally off for having knocked the ASA dial way off... Perhaps most interesting is to embrace how Fuji sees photography as more than upgrading sensors. For many, like my first reaction - they have downgraded the pro3 by hiding the LCD. And then one starts pondering - is that first reaction really true? Before, the Xt2 and pro2 were the same cameras in two different styles (except the optical viewfinder). Now they are somehow increasing the distance between the two lines more. Claiming that one get the pro because of the optical/hybrid VF. While also making it clear that this is a photo-camera - not a hybrid video camera (even if it can do some video). It is kind of boldly saying that it exists for other reasons than being a fashion statement. Claiming that if one shell out 1800 bucks for this body one is already capable of getting the settings right - claiming that one did see the frame as the shutter was released. Claiming that the buyer of this will not spend much time fiddling with the Q-menu. Because one is observing and composing. Maybe I am a bit romantic - but I can see the attraction of "trusting eye" and not second-guessing oneself by being in a continuous "review process" while being outside. Separating the "capture" brain and the "evaluate" brain. I am definitely not sure this camera is for me. But I tip my non-existing hat for Fuji who consider the process of photography as more than specs. I definitely love that this camera is for sale. Someone will get it and make great things with deep satisfaction. While we all lie and speak a bit of truth in saying "gear does not matter".

I agree with a lot of what you're saying. The distinction is now very clear, and that's a great thing. In this day and age, where there are so many camera saturating the market, a lot of brand cannibalisation can occur. By opening a rift between the two cameras in such a dramatic fashion, you have a very clear divide for consumers. While I love the X-T3, using the X-Pro actually made me approach everything in a way I haven't done for a long time. Reviewing the screen is perfect and essential if you NEED the shot, such as client work, but sometimes it can become restricting. Over the last year, I've found myself relying on the screen more than the EVF, which is something I never thought I'd do. In fact, it was something that I was adamant I'd never do. It was refreshing to get back to basics though. I've never wanted an X-Pro more than now.

Great review and what a wonderful time to be a photographer. There's truly something for everyone. All modern camera's take wonderful photo's, it's just a matter of what style, ergonomics, budget, features work best for you as an individual.
@ppmagazine
@ppmagazine 5 лет назад
Basically, exactly that. Also ,Fujifilm already have the X-T range if you want to stay traditional, so there's a backup if this isn't the camera for you. But, as long as you can get the shot, that's what matters! ;)

You talked to a lot of pro's and they all use the evf, which I do not doubt one bit. Then the only logical question, why buy this very expensive X pro camera with the unique "hybrid" view finder to only end up using the evf.
@ppmagazine
@ppmagazine 5 лет назад
Well. I was perhaps paraphrasing, but they used the viewfinder, whether it was optical or EVF I couldn't say for all the people they asked, but either way, it's still the viewfinder. And if they like the rest of the camera set up, you can choose EVF or OVF and never switch out, it's an option, not an essential.

Did you shoot anything in low light? What did you think? and what's the Auto Focus like in low light? Does this Multi exposure work on Raw or Jpegs only?
@ppmagazine
@ppmagazine 5 лет назад
I shot in inclement light, but I wouldn't say low-light. However, knowing the sensor from the X-T3 and 30, I would happily say it'll put in a brilliant performance. Both cameras have a tightly packed grain, and I've found usable shots at ISO 6400, and even 12,800 is impressive compared to what was available a few years ago. The AF didn't falter once, and didn't even seem to hunt or feel wanting. It's supposedly more sensitive in low-light now too, and the X-T3 and 30 are both heavy hitters in the AF stakes. I know the multi-exposure HDR mode can output as RAW, and I think the mutli exposure also outputs as RAW, but off the top of my head, I can't find the exact answer.

As the content owner of an XT20 and XT2, am really wondering what Xtra this camera would give me? Have yet to really outgrow the above cameras and don't need the Xtra pixels...others will doubtless disagree. Be tempted to go for XT3, if anything, but then again, have a pretty full complement of quality Fuji glass and don't see this as must move to, unlike the Auto IF etc Sony have put in the 6400 etc. And, yes, I am a hobbyist, but that does not mean I settle for second best.

If the X-T3 is more your thing you'll find most if not all the firmware features (HDR, Classic Neg, better AF) being added to the X-T3 via firmware update, so don't feel you'll be missing out if you do go for X-T3. :)
@ppmagazine

From the X-T range, the 3, or even the 30 which we've just tested in Chernobyl - should drop in about a month - are both excellent cameras. But as you say, if you haven't outgrown it, don't change it.I still use my X-T2 a lot, and still love it!

Can’t decide between this and the eos r... I’m a wedding photographer... I really want the xpro3, but overall I think the eos r and RF glass is better for the type of work I do, plus canon battery life is better..... wish I could afford both.
@ppmagazine
@ppmagazine 5 лет назад
Actually, they both have a CIPA rating of 370 shots for battery life. Personally, my main camera is full-frame.We think the image quality from both is top class. You may find a slight boost in low-light performance from the EOS R because it's full-frame, but we prefer the ergonomics of the Fuji. The multi function touch bar on the EOS R isn't great, and it lacks a joystick for fast focal point changes. You could also consider the Sony A7 III, or A7R III, both of which are phenomenal cameras, great sensors and image quality, both full-frame, both class leading AF systems and both will work with Canon glass, if you have it already, with the Sigma MC-!! adaptor.

Different for the sake of being different, slightly upgraded but not superseding anything. Film simulation is for niche style nerds and is now dominating that crummy little low res display. What is that half arsed flip screen for? Shooting from the hip? I can do that with any proper articulated screen. And then the price!! Is Fuji speculating on the stupidity of fashion conscious camera yuppies? Well, they might succeed.

As a Fuji shooter I have to say I hate their dumb slogan for this camera, “pure photography” and “purist”. There’s nothing “purist” on a digital camera so let’s put away the false narrative. With that said this will be Fuji’s first and last camera with that LCD screen.
@ppmagazine
@ppmagazine 5 лет назад
You could say that the only purist approach is the medium before the medium you're shooting on. Unless it's Daguerreotype, then none of us are purists. Of course, The real purist is the one who accepts that any camera is just a tool, and concentrates on the image, which is what I think Fujifilm are saying here.
@TheIkaika777
@TheIkaika777 5 лет назад
Practical Photography, were people not “focusing on the image” prior to the release of this camera? Were people who use cameras, like Fuji or Leica digital cameras, with fixed screens and tilting screens fooling themselves this whole time? The fact is the “we made the screen this way so people can concentrate on the image” is pure marketing. If Fuji actually felt this way then they would have removed the screen altogether but they didn’t which destroys their own narrative.
@ppmagazine
@ppmagazine 5 лет назад
@@TheIkaika777 Personally, we'd say any tool that helps you create your vision is a good thing. But we would argue that just because you shoot film doesn't make you a purist. Ignoring the gear you're using, and selecting the best tool to allow you to create is the true key to photographic purity in our eyes.
@TheIkaika777
@TheIkaika777 5 лет назад
Practical Photography, and having a camera that has an lcd screen that flips up and hides doesn’t = “pure photography”. Any digital camera can do that by simply turning off the lcd screen. Is a person who makes masterpieces with the X-A7 not an artist? To market the camera as, “pure photography” or “purist” because it forces you to use the VF is like those people who say full frame is the best. It’s a bad and false argument especially in 2019.

I wish Fuji would abandon this whole tradition of releasing new cameras with old sensors. This is the X*Pro*3. Yes, the sensor is great. We can see that in the XT3/30. But it’s a year old now. Why would I want to pay nearly $2k for last year’s sensor? I love everything else about the XPro3, but the image is going to be the exact same as what I could get with last year’s XT3/30. Same guts with a new shell. *facepalm
@ppmagazine
@ppmagazine 5 лет назад
It's not a Fujifilm specific thing, the entire camera industry works on the same model. However, that's not a bad thing, and there are a few reasons why that I can think of, and after all, the only thing that matters with regards to cameras is the ability to get the job done! The cost of developing a new sensor every year would be astronomical, and the sensors these days are so good, a lot of people struggle to justify the upgrade as it is when the quality is good. Also, gains in sensor tech at the moment is pretty much incremental. We've reached the point where the big jumps have all happened, and now it's small refinements. A new sensor doesn't always mean a brand new level of image quality. The BSI in the X-Trans 4 is leaps above the X-Trans 3 setup for me. Itfeels sharper, more responsive and the colour are even better. I would say that the most important part of a camera in 2019/20 is the handling, ergonomics and fit for the shooter. And let's not forget the cameras from other manufacturers that are releasing new cameras with 4 year old sensors, suddenly the X-Pro3 seems like a good deal! ;)
@aheroforeternity
@aheroforeternity 5 лет назад
Practical Photography don’t know of any other major camera manufacturers that add old sensors to their most expensive “pro” bodies. It’d be one thing if old sensors trickle down to “entry” level bodies like the XT30, but to put an old sensor in your (currently) most expensive APS-C “pro” body? Hmmm.

@@aheroforeternity well, I read your previous message about Canon. Interestingly, the Canon's EOS R mirrorless flagship is based on the same sensor as the 5D I, and the EOS RP is the 6D II. However, the only important factor is the images they produce.
