Another excellent video, Darren. Much appreciated. Now tell us about the adventure of getting back to the car and home again!

Fortunately I had a retrieve driver who was following me via a tracker app on my phone. About 10 minutes after packing up my glider she arrived with hot coffee and chocolate to warm me up!

I'm really enjoying your videos, you have a great combination of very informative and also entertaining! :) Please keep making more content! I'm a new pilot from British Columbia Canada and have my H1, nearly ready for my H2 exam. Woohoo! If you take suggestions for videos I was wondering if you can give more details about cross country thermaling and ridge lift... All your planning thought processes going through you mind as how to get from thermal to thermal... Plans a, b, and c, if things go to plan, or if they don't. You make thermaling look easy but some people around here are doing way to many sled runs and not staying up. I don't want to join that category haha 😆 Thank you very much for all your content! God bless you!

Hey Fisher! Congratulations on getting into the BEST sport in the world! And good luck for your H2 exam... once you are fully qualified the flying world will open up to you. Thank you for following my videos, I'm really glad you like them. Cross country thermalling - I am currently editing quite a few videos where I am doing cross country flights. In some of them I intend to show an analysis of the cross country flight and what my thought process were. I'm also planning a new video all about thermalling - I did one previously and the new one will add to, rather than replace the original one. I have quite a few ideas about it, including exercises you can do to improve your thermalling. I'm also planning a video on low saves - how to maximise your chances of getting one and how to do one. Ridge lift... I'll add that to my list too. Lots of vids to do and rather too many to edit at the moment - but I'll get there :-)

Snow on your mic!?! You weren't joking about the cold. Shame there was no footage of Castle Howard from the air but interesting to see your track log for the flight.. and 112km isn't shabby.

To be fair, my body was warm most of the flight, just my fingers for the first few hours. Towards the end my toes got cold and then my body got cold... that's when I decided to land!

Great flight! Thanks for sharing. Have you considered heated gloves and clothing? LiPo batteries are light.
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 3 года назад
Yes I have considered it, but it isn't very often I fly in conditions as cold as this. I've also considered putting disposable heating pads in my bar mitts - the ones that you snap and they heat up from a chemical reaction. I might try that...

At 14:05 in the video, you show yourself crossing West along the ridge and picking up a perfect thermal. What made you go look that direction? Was Steve already in it, or were you somehow expecting to find lift there when you'd not seen it elsewhere? Was it just a case of having eliminated other locations as lift sources? I would have been looking at the wind direction and the angle it was making to the ridge and figuring that ridge lift would be dead there and that it would be a risky place to transition to, as I might not be able to make it back. But - I'm also a very new XC pilot.
@foodini

Any chance of getting the flyxc link?
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 3 года назад
@@foodini yes, sorry I meant to put it in the description. Here is the Livetrack 24 link (incomplete because my phone died): www.livetrack24.com/track/1838646 You can see the full flight here - www.uknxcl.co.uk/tables/# look for my name and the flight that is 111.96km then select "Add trace to map"
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 3 года назад
Excellent question foodini... at that point in the flight Steve was slightly to my NE and was not going up. Also I had realised that the wind was off to the NorthWest and so I thought that corner where I found the thermal would be more into wind and therefore more likely to work better. It turns out this was one of the few occasions that I was right! If you look at the track of my thermal and compare it to the direction the hill is facing, you will see that section of the hill was much more into wind. I was plenty high enough to transition there when I did and coming back would involve flying over the top landing area, so it was a pretty safe move.

Looks like there might have been wave about. Often makes the lower air rough as **** !
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 3 года назад
I know what you mean Iain, but I don't think this particular roughness was wave. Though I'm often wrong!
@poklet
@poklet 3 года назад
It looks overcast, but yet there were thermals. What’s heating up the ground? Or is it just the case that the ground is slightly warmer than the freezing air?
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 3 года назад
Exactly! The forecast was for very good thermals due to a high lapse rate (getting colder fast with increasing altitude). I think it had been so good that the clouds had overdeveloped and cut off the sun. But because it was SO cold higher up, what little sun fell on the ground produced enough thermals to get up on.

Where can I buy those bar mits?
@MooSurfer
@MooSurfer 3 года назад
www.turfhouse.com/zoot-bar-mitts-c2x34126774 one consideration is that they are a bit difficult to put on when wearing big gloves because they're a bit floppy. They do the job of keeping your hands warm well though.

Thank you Yas. What percentage? Percentage of what? I don't know - perhaps you could google it?
