Hanspaulka is one of the most luxurious addresses in Prague. However, it was also home to many famous personalities of the First Republic. How did they live and which local villas are definitely worth visiting? This is what we will tell you in this episode of our Live Prague series.
Villa of Vlasta Burian, Kadeřávkovská 13
The most famous Czech comedian built his villa at the time of his greatest fame. Unfortunately, he did not enjoy luxury for long - after the war his property was confiscated. Today, a plaque by sculptor Josef Nálepa commemorates the actor on the house.
Villa of Lída Baar, Neherovská 8
The functionalist building was inhabited by Lída and her sister, actress Zorka Janů. After the war, however, they also met a tragic fate. Baarova was accused of collaboration, and Zorka ended her life by jumping from the roof of the villa after being fired from the Vinohrady theatre.
The villa of Army Gen. Alois Elias, Fetrovská 1447
Another building with a moving story is the villa built by the Protectorate Prime Minister Alois Elias and his wife. He was arrested and subsequently executed in 1942 for his anti-Nazi activities.
Villa of Oldřich Starý, Za Hanspaulkou 15
The villa, designed by architect Oldřich Starý, was the home of graphic artist Jiří Rathouský in the second half of the 20th century. He created the font Metron, which is used to write the Prague metro stations.
Villa of Antonín Engel, Na Karlovce 6
At the end of the 1920s another villa was added to Hanspaulka. It was built by architect Antonín Engel. He became famous, for example, for his concept of the Victory Square. This was the subject of a piece on the transformation of Kulacek: • Kulaťák čeká proměna z...
Villa of Milouš Jakeš, Na Karlovce 5
Right next door to Antonín Engel's villa is the house where Milouš Jakeš, former Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, once lived. Today the villa belongs to the coal miner Petr Paukner, who bought it for CZK 89 million.
Villa Vista, Vostrovská 17
This functionalist villa is one of the most expensive in Prague - in 2021 it was bought by Marek Španěl, the owner of the video game company Bohemia Interactive Studio, for a staggering CZK 260 million.
