Today's video is all about our baby sulcata tortoise, Happy! We introduced you to Happy in the summer of 2016, and showed you the enclosure we created for him in the summer of 2017. Now, we want to share an update on how he is doing!
The sulcata or African spurred tortoise is one of the largest tortoises in the world! Our little guy is only a few years old, and does not take up much space for now. We built him a 10 foot by 10 foot enclosure, under a pergola covered with passionfruit, and have added two fresh water sources for him. One is a fountain that circulates fresh water all day and night; the back-up water source, for days like today when we are doing maintenance to his fountain, is simply a bubbler set up to flood his grassy area. Happy loves playing in the mud, so sometimes we'll turn the bubbler on even when the fountain is up and running.
A sulcata's diet should be primarily grass, but these gentle giants also love leafy greens, flowers, and occasionally fruits! He loves lettuce, mustard, hibiscus, and mulberry leaves, but his favorite is watermelon. :) This little vegetarian gets fresh produce from the backyard every day, and we've started growing another garden just for his favorite foods.
