Our koi pond is almost 2 years old now, and we wanted to answer some of the most frequently asked questions we get about having a pond in Arizona! In our next video, we will share our weekly maintenance routine.

Thanks so much for the love! We got most of the pond plants from a friend, but all the water lilies came from A&P Nursery. We got 2 of our koi from Petco and the other 3 from Next Day Koi. Hope this helps!

I absolutely am inspired by your pond! I too love plants, so the idea of expanding our backyard ecosystem to include a water garden is exciting! I have 2 questions: First: Did you design your pond out cement and a liner, or is it a prefab pond shell? Second: We have a lot of feral cats in our neighborhood (we have a trap/sterilize/release program) and they’re great for keeping the roof rat population in check. Do you have to worry about cats getting to your water-babies?

Our pond has been one of the most rewarding parts of our backyard! We built ours with just a pond liner. We have lots of cats in the neighborhood too and none of them have messed with the fish; as the koi grow, I would think they would be too large for a housecat to catch anyways. Hope this helps! Great pond, loving it, I am in Tempe, and got a 6x8 pond of mine. Would you please list your plants that you have in or around your pond, and where do you think I can get them?

In the pond we have water lilies that we got from A&P Nursery, and growing on the edges we have Yerba mansa, canna lilies (also available at A&P), taro, and cattail. Some of the plants we got from a friend. You may be able to find some online -- hope this helps!

The kois are beautiful.. How big were these koi fish when you first bought them and how much?

The smallest was just under 4 inches and the biggest was almost 6 inches, so they were pretty small!

Amazing pond and fish, are cala lillies poisonous for fish?, do you get any mice?. I'm from Ireland we don't have to worry about shade because we dont get sun ha

Thanks so much! Ha ha, sounds like Ireland is pretty much the opposite of Arizona! We have canna lillies which aren't poisonous, but not sure about calla lillies. No, we don't have mice in our yard. Thanks for your comment!

Does the pump run off of solar or electricity?

It runs off electricity. We have tried using solar in our backyard but we have too many shade trees now for most solar-powered things to work!

This pond looks great, what’s the size of it? Was afraid to put koi in mine but yours seem to be the same size and your koi look great.

It's tough to calculate the size because it isn't round or square, but we think it's about 1200 gallons? It's just under 3 feet deep at the deepest point, and about 15 feet wide at the widest point. Our koi definitely seem healthy and happy!

Beautiful pond. How old are the koi to get big like that? How old is the pond?

We filled the pond with water for the first time in August 2018 and got our baby koi about a month or two after that. They grow fast!

They ship koi all the way from Japan. I ordered some off Amazon a year ago. They are big now. I bought goldfish from petco though arasas. They are big too now.

We ordered our koi online through nextdaykoi.com, but they are not Japanese koi. Those kinds can get expensive, and really big!

@@GreeniesGarden they are not gen 1 “Japanese koi” but they are originally from Japan. The breeding there, along with conditions, are making larger koi but people are ordering from Japan and breeding locally too.

Your pond is amazing!! How do you keep your koi from eating all the plants? I live here in Arizona just started building a pond last year and our Koi eat all the plants, we can’t keep plants in there. What’s your Secret?

As our koi (and the koi-goldfish hybrids!) have gotten larger, they have eaten all the lily pads. The taro and Yerba mansa are tucked into the boulders around the pond so that may be protecting them from the fish. Hope this helps!

In our pond, we have: Yerba mansa (the small plant growing all around the perimeter of the pond), Canna lily, Taro (unknown variety), Cattail, And some very cute plant with lily pad leaves that sometimes grows in the Yerba mansa. If we find out what it's called, we'll update this comment. :)

Okay in that time how many fishes can it hold or how many fishes can you put in that size pond.?

We didn't intend on having any more than about 8 koi total, so the goldfish-koi hybrids definitely have us thinking we may be overstocked by the time they are all mature. Keeping the water clean from ammonia/nitrite/nitrate build up is super important to keeping fish happy and healthy -- we'll be making a video on the pond maintenance we do each week to keep our water clean and clear!

Exactly! Pond water is full of nutrients for the plants, we put it on everything!

I had a koi like baby her name was 24K… new to phoenix and put in a pond but the heat is a battle with algae. I have Papyrus but my koi eat my water Lillie’s and hornwont faster than I can grow them. I feed them well. Any suggestions on how to keep my fish from eating out of the plant?

Hi can i grow elephant ears in soul outdoor. I do not have a pond n ive always want to plant it in the ground here in vegas. Any pointers tips how to grow elephant ears in desert caliche clay soil 😊

Yes you should be able to, we would recommend amending the soil with organic nutrients and keep it watered well. It may die back in the winter if you get below freezing. Hope this helps!

The koi have eaten most of the water lilies now, so it's wide open! The water lilies help the fish hide from predators, so we're hoping we can grow some again in the future.

How do you know the baby fish are a hybrid and not just koi babies?

Koi and goldfish are closely related, but one of the biggest noticeable differences between the two is that koi have "whiskers" and goldfish don't. None of the baby fish have whiskers and their body shape doesn't look like a koi. Great question!

Thanks for the awesome name suggestions! The darker fish are a goldfish-koi hybrid, they are sterile from the research we have done but they were definitely surprises!

Hey one more thing plant a elephant ear Thailand giant it loves hot direct sun, you would have a monster beauty. Love the garden I think your ready for exotics with your new shade.

We got most of the pond plants from a friend's pond, but all the water lilies were from A&P Nurseries. Two of the koi were from Petco, 3 were from Next Day Koi, and the Gambusia were from the Maricopa County Vector Office. Hope this helps!
