We look at the Harbor Freight Bandfile Belt Sander for this Review. The 5.3 Amp 1/2" Heavy Duty Bandfile Belt Sander from Harbor Freight is a useful tool for the occasional use but it does have limitations that I explain in the video. I also explain how to fix some of the design problems. It's not a cheap tool so watch this video before you buy!

In this video I do a review of the Harbor Freight Half Inch Bandfile Belt Sander. This is an useful tool but not for everyone. It has it's benefits but also some drawbacks. In the video I show you how to deal with and fix some of the design flaws that this belt sander has and how to improve this tool to make your life easier and make it a more useful tool.

Have you learned any tips or tricks for keeping the belt fastened? I like your washer idea may try it. And speed control may help with amp spike on my generator when I use this remotely. Thank you for any tips and for this video.

@@timsmith6700 Not really. I use it just like I mentioned in the video. It's not a tool I use that often, so it works OK as it is.

Thanks for the vid. I've been curious about this tool at HF. It's not something I have now, but have it in mind should I get in a scenario where I need something like it. I appreciate you showing us the details. I didn't realize it will pivot so many directions.

Many thanks for straight forward review, and showing a few modifications I should plan to make. I like that speed controller you made, I might have to build one into my table since that push on/off also acts a nice emergency-off

I have this tool. I often work with hard woods such as ebony and Wenge, etc. It's nice for reaching into tight areas, but you have to be careful as the tip can easily gouge wood. Great video. I look forward to future reviews. Good tip regarding the cover and the speed control. I actually have one for my router but didn't think to use it for the sander. I will try it next time I use it.

Paul. Do you still have this tool? Any tips for keeping the belt on and aligned? Thank you for your post.
@paul-ld9vh

@@timsmith6700 I still have this tool. There is a yellow knob near the front of the unit which controls the tracking of the belt. If you turn it on and move the dial, you will see the belt move to either side. Also buy the best belts you can find. Worn out, thin belts don't track as well. Hope this helps!

For speed control you can also use a rheostat pedal...the kind sewing machines and some rotary tools take

How about cutting slots in the cover like the slots on the head? That way you have protection on the drive end too.

Sure that will work fine.

Did you ever make a video of how you made that switch to control the speed? Thanks
@ModernDIYProjects

I don't think I did. It's just a simple dimmer switch in a outlet box. Anyone can do it.

how do you change the sanding belt out
@borna430
@borna430 3 года назад
Hi, great video. I bought a dimmer and kind of did what you have. The only issue that I see is mine doesn't get as slow as your. Is that related to the switch itself? If so, what kind do you have and where did you get your dimmer?
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 3 года назад
I used an old dimmer left over from a remodel project. I think its a Leviton, but not sure. This was probably the El CHEAPO model.
@borna430

@@ModernDIYProjects the one I bought is for celling fans vs for lights? funny thing is the one I got was $12 and the one for lights was $9. So I got the $12 thinking is better which is not bad at all, but yours gets really slow, impressive. Also the $9 switch was for LED and newer lamp and not the old lamps. so wasn't sure if that still works on motor?
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 3 года назад
The cheapest one (for incandescent lights) is probably the best because it wont have any circuitry to mess with the current flow. It will be a simple voltage regulator adjusting the flow of voltage/amperage to the motor.

The Makita has 6 speeds and it's awesome but 300 compared to 40 bucks may have to get the hf one

So this review is great but what is the yellow button for in the middle? I got curious and plugged it in and pressed the yellow button and it came out and now I cant get it back in?
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 3 года назад
The yellow round knob in the middle is the tracking to keep the belt from flying off the end of the pads. The Yellow handle behind that is to loosen tension so you can turn the belt from side to side for different angles.
@ToyotaKTM
@ToyotaKTM Год назад
This tool is made from an angle grinder. The yellow BUTTON (not knobs) is the spindle lock, used to remove grinder disks. There is no use for that button on this tool. I'll bet it made an ugly noise when you pressed the button, with it running.

Some guys that have this sander have been converting the Milwaukee 3" cutoff to a cordless bandfile with the belt assembly.

How does this work for sanding/grinding on metal?
@ModernDIYProjects

Works fine. All you need to do is use the proper grit sanding belt.

I just cut off the cover plate instead of using washers... to get rid of the sawdust.

You hit the nail on the head it's for ultra tight areas but I can't justify this thing myself. Well don't

If you use the proper grit sanding paper, I don't see why not.

I know the grinder is doubble insulated,,,,,but the bell box and dimmer is not. - Use a grounded cord to your dimmer pack. There are all kinds of things in there that COULD go th ground. If that happens YOU will become the grouding conductor. Trust me. You will hate it,

Seems like using a Dremel with sanding drums solves all the issues with this tool
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 4 года назад
Each one has it's own benefits. This one can get into tight corners with the straight edge where a drum will not hit the corners properly.
@polymyxa8233
@polymyxa8233 2 года назад
Sanding drums are only good for smaller jobs. This one can take off a lot of materials quickly and reach certain tight spots dremel tools cannot.

Dremel is a joke for all But the smallest homeowner type Jobs. I couldn’t deal With the weak things. I use air Die grinders and have all The power I need and the dremel went in the trash since it burned up in no time.

As far as I know, you should not try and vary AC motors speed they are made for a fixed speed If you want variable speed you need to use a DC motor. Regards Roger.
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 4 года назад
I don't think these motors are that sensitive and I have not experienced any adverse effects, but I will keep an eye on it and let you know if anything goes wrong. That way everybody can learn from my mistake.
@bogtheforest

I think that is only for induction motors. The motors in these kinds of handheld tools are brushed and I think work on DC as well.
