I couldn't find much information about how people had their trimmers mounted in the vertical position, so I made a simple stand and I'm so pleased I wanted to share it. I understand not everyone has access to a welder, but the same results can be achieved with a wooden 4x4 and a base.
Required items.
Giraud Tri-Way Trimmer.

Harbor Freight 6" Bench Grinder.

1/2"x3/8" coupler.

18" 2.5"x2.5" 1/4 wall steel tube.
8"x10" 1/4" thick steel plate.
Drill, 5/16 drill bit.
9/64 Allen wrench
Hardware
Two 3.5" 1/4"bolts, two 1/4" washers, two 1/4" nuts.
Angle grinder (not required but helpful to remove the opposite aide arbor and threads on the work side. MAKE SURE YOU CUT THE CORRECT ARBOR OFF! The tool needs to turn counter-clockwise as you look at it, otherwise you will ruin your blades.

The HF 6” Central Machine bench grinder is no longer available, but I used their newer 6” Bauer grinder that is essentially the same machine to build mine. I used an old steel car spare tire donut rim as the base, cut & welded a piece of 2” pipe thru the center hub of that rim and then cut & welded a small piece of plate steel to mount the motor on. Once I had it all fabbed & welded out, I blasted, primed and painted it (as close to Redding green as I could get). I did everything else essentially the same as Rob did in this video. I have two Giraud Tri-Ways (.223 & .308WIN) scheduled for delivery shortly. Thanks, Rob, for this great idea!!

Getting ready to put a Little Crow Gunworks trimmer in a router table and use similarly. Had not heard of this Giraud trimmer will look into it. Ive had this WFT for a few years or better and have never used it for different reasons but mainly only reloading for pistol caliber up to this point. Going to be setting up a couple heads for a couple rifle calibers soon. Thanks for the vid.

that's a beautiful thing.. i would suggest losing the hard leather gloves, switch to 3 or 5mil nitrile, in comparison to your concerns about the bottom shaft grabbing a shoe lace or pants leg if your glove ever got snagged (as unlikely as it is) on the spinning tool it could pull you in.

I cant take credit 100%, it took a lot of digging to find somebody mounting it vertically to the side of their bench. I tried that and it made a hell of a lot of noise so I put my thinking cap on and made this. I'm happy with how it turned out.

I started trimming with one of these. Not bad if you're trimming a couple hundred cases here and there. Absolutely sucks for any kind of volume. Still hard to beat a Dillon case trimmer, but it's 💰💰💰

A couple hundred isn't volume for you? I wish I had that problem lol
@philbaker29
@philbaker29 3 года назад
What I meant was, if you trim a few hundred a year, then it's not bad. When you need to trim a 5 gallon bucket worth, your fingers go numb. That being said, I reload for a hobby and not necessarily for the cost savings. So I eventually bought the Dillon trimmer.

Is this thing still kicking? How has the trimmer held up? I was literally about to place and order for the motorized one from them and came across this video and now I think I’m preferring to save a few hundred and get basically the same thing. Has the harbor freight motor held up well?

I am surprised how quiet it is. I could never get my .223 to trim even with same unit. Actually one time I did right before I sold it, it was if the stars aligned or something but I forgot to lock the nut and when my cordless drill has that stupid break that jolted and enertia made it undone and I lost that setting and it started again trimming horribly crooked. I spent hour messing around and using shims and sometime I could see it mostly even and sometimes it would chamfer on one side and nothing on the other. In the beginning I contacted Giraud and they said to send it back and they would refund but I though if I just played around maybe I could get it to perform, well I should have just returned it when I had chance. Right now I sold it at a loss. Maybe .308 is different or maybe I had defect, I don't know.
@DimaProk
@DimaProk 3 года назад
P.S. It's not just one caliber BTW. If you got .308 you can trim .243, .260, 7mm-08 - based on .308 parent cartridge

Sounds like the carbide blade inside may have been out of whack. I tried using my cordless but it never worked out for me so I made this contraption.
@RJ-sr5dv
@RJ-sr5dv 3 года назад
So how do you set it up so it trims exactly to the proper length?
@robgoose8126
@robgoose8126 3 года назад
The inside of the hole is shaped like the chamber of your rifle, the cutter indexes off the shoulder of the case. So as long as your sizer die is correctly set up you just push the case in until the shoulder of the case hits the shoulder of the "chamber". There is no adjustment or set-up needed. Just size the case, push it in until it stops chirping, and repeat.
@RJ-sr5dv
@RJ-sr5dv 3 года назад
@@robgoose8126 Rob, Thanks for the explanation and the clarification. I guess where my confusion lies is when I do a chamber cast for each rifle I measure and trim to the bevel and back off my brass length about .005. As I shoot mostly soft cast bullets I am concerned that if I don't get the "neck length" close as I can, there will be a gap between the top of the brass and the chamber which will fill with lead as the projectile obturates. I speculate that this extra bit of lead will not only build up in the chamber but also cause finning at the base. I do my best to position the lube groove close to the top of the brass so it (the lube) fills the gap. Another issue I have is that I shoot mostly straight wall cartridges, 45-70---38-55---35-40 to name a few., although I do have several bottle neck cartridges which this trimmer would work. So in those instances where a chamber's neck is not exactly to SAMMI spec, how does one adjust the trim to length with this trimmer or is it cartridge / SAMMI spec specific? TIA Bob
@robgoose8126
@robgoose8126 3 года назад
@@RJ-sr5dv you're probably better off contacting Giraud directly. As far as I know their trimmers cut to SAAMI spec only. I do not believe they have anything available for straight walled casings.

Is it mandatory to cut the threads off?
@robgoose8126
@robgoose8126 3 года назад
I dont hink so but it's worth doing in my opinion. Not only does it bring the trimmer closer to the motor reducing potential wobble (it is harbor freight after all) but it increases the surface area contact between the spindle and coupler.

@@TheBigfoot1999 if you have a Harbor Freight near you they should have angle grinders under $20 that would probably do the trick. Either way I doubt the trimmer has enough mass nor does the motor have enough torque that it'll matter if you tighten it down on the threads. You are not getting the length of the sized. Case lenght is important and that what the Lyman unit does if you set-it up properly. Once you trim the case in that device there is no going back. You can make up the distance lose but setting the bullet shorter.
