There are different opinions about powder coating your bullets, I believe that the number one reason is affordability, the expense of getting set up with lube/size machine, also dies, and punches are costly. powder coating takes away most of that cost is the fact that simple size dies with punches are available from Lee. So, all you need to make quality cast bullets is the mold, the size die punch combo, the Powdercoat, and a second-hand toaster oven. anyone with the desire to make bullets can do this without a lot of playing around trying this and that. Plus, if you like your gun to stay cleaner while shooting, powder-coated bullets don't leave a waxy film on your firearm. Good series Elvis -Dave

Man Elvis, you were paying some careful attention to these coating sessions, in order to grade the bullets like you have. That's awesome, because it helps others eliminate some of these "fussy" powders, without having to to buy them. We get to learn from your actions. Thank You. I'm just getting into this bullet molding and PC'ing thing, as I want to save money training, without leading up my barrels. This is also a super good way to make and store ammo for a rainy day... or SHTF.. Many out here appreciate you ...

Thanks for taking the time to do this Elvis. I wasn't sure if I wanted to try this, until I watched your videos. My reason for trying PC, was leading. I shoot/reload 40 45 and 45 LC. I bought HF Red and Yellow. Cheap I know, Don't Judge Me!! LOL Tried them out and had zero leading. I size my cast bullets before PC. Since HF doesn't make red or yellow anymore, tried white and black. I did read HF black just wouldn't work. Still I tried it and yep wouldn't work. My last couple of batches I tried mixing the Black with the red, yellow and white just to use up the black. Red didn't mix well. Yellow was sort of usable, but the mix of white and black came out what I would call battleship grey. I used a couple of tablespoons of white and maybe a teaspoon of the black.

I tried powder coating yesterday for the first time. Seemed to be working well in the toaster over that I got at a thrift store. I had it set at 400 and went into the house for some leftover thanksgiving pie. When I came out the bullets had gotten soft and a couple melted leaving the powder coat shell left on the screen. The oven thermostat didn't work correctly. It was kind of funny but stunk up the area a lot. I'll try it again with a different oven. Thanks for all the tips. I used the Eastwood light ford blue too.

Great video Elvis. I have candy purple from the powder coat store. It’s a transparent or top coat powder coat. My instructions says it works best with a silver base coat. Because raw lead is very similar to silver color, I powder coat them as cast. I have similar results as you. But projectiles are very well coated but appears thin. I’ve played around and have double coated them but the high gloss goes away as a result. I’m sure you know but I’ll say it anyway...when I get powders that don’t coat as well as I hope...I use that powder as a mixer. Thanks for sharing. Great series.

Hi elvis: So I did some more powder coating the last couple of days. I tried the dark PC that I got from you. I couldn't get it to stick again for full coverage. I then tried the light blue again and it woks great. Then I mixed blue and the dark and it worked pretty good. The more blue the better. I also did the low temp cook and it worked well too. At 200 it takes about 12 to 15 minutes to get good and shiny. Keep those tips coming :) L8R, Bri

Just thought I would throw out there, that I ran a bunch of Cadillac blue powder,by Eastwood paint, on some .45 acp. On your "fussy" scale, I'd give it a 0-1, as the stuff coated with no effort, and came out gorgeous when baked. I have to chuckle, as in the ammo case they look like a bunch of blueberries,but the contrast against the brass and silver colored cases is really nice. I wish I could post some pics on here

Also I watched your video on preheating the bullets, and the one on lower temp curing. Are you back to curing at the recommended temp. then water quenching?

Good video and information Elvis, I have 14 powder colors all Eastwood. I find the Ford light and dark blue, dark green and maroon are the easiest to work with. The others especially the translucent colors all require 2 coats to get the look I want. I have Eastwoods Single Stage Reflective Chrome on the way so I am wondering how it's going to be to work with. I do have some colors that I probably won't be buying again but that's how I find out what I am going to like is by just trying them. I use the shake and bake method and it works well for me. I do size all my bullets with the Lee sizer kit, inexpensive and works great. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos!

Elvis Ammo. Luv your powdercoat videos ! My question - Will using powdercoat allow us to use softer lead alloys and rely on the powdercoat for barrel leading protection ? As in using 12 to 15 BHN 44 mag lead powdercoated bullets instead of harder alloy 21 to 24 BHN bullets lubed with standard bullet lubes to avoid leading the barrel ??? Any info or tests done on the subject ? Thanks for any advice

When searching for a PC to use, regardless of color, I notice you have options between, Polyester TGIC, Urethane, Epoxy & Hybrid. any time I see someone mention a color I look it up and it seems to always be Polyester TGIC, is that luck or on purpose? if its on purpose, is there a reason why you pick one over the other? Have you ever used the glow in the dark powder coat paints? Do you think they would work like a poor mans tracer ammo? 🔫👍
@Accidic
@Accidic 2 года назад
The problem with glow in the dark powder or paint in general is the source. The strongest that I know of is a strontium based. Brighter glows are obtained with larger pieces. For best effect you'd want a light color (White is usually best) and you'd have to mix/coat it with a clear coat powder mixed with strontium glow powder of decent sized particle. Fortunately it's a little softer than copper so I would think it unlikely to damage barrels at least. The only time you're going to have a chance to see any kind of tracing effect it would have to be at night. Otherwise you'll see nothing different about them all. I wouldn't think any other glow options would be worth it personally but in fairness I've not tested it in this kind of application.

If you don't get good coverage with a powder just redo it with a powder that coats well.It will take. No need to throw them back for melting. If you want good results pre-heat the bare bullets In your oven at 200 for 5 mins.and let sit for another 5 mins.after the one minute tumble. You will be ahead of the game.
