Hard style = sprint, hardcore endocrine response, taxing the phosphocreatine system and brushing the glycolitic system. Sport style = durability, slightly less hardcore endocrine response, balance, coordination, taxing the glycolitic system and brushing the anaerobic system. Both have their places. Both have pros and cons. Its the 100m dash vs the 1 mile.

Personally, I compete and coach kettlebell sport but it's not an "either or" situation. It's true that if you want to compete in kettlebell sport, then that most of what you will do will be sport specific. If you want to achieve a certificate in hardstyle training, then yes, you need to train in that modality. BUT it doesn't mean it's for life!! You can train and compete in kettlebell sport and add hardstyle conditioning for extra general fitness and vice versa! People like to think in black and white terms like "it's them or us, this or that" and it's not the case. Each modality is different, has different goals. Both styles compliment each other in a way because they are the opposite of each other but have the same roots. Both have pros and cons. Just lift and enjoy your training!

Warren Davis hi Warren! Could be the timing of your swing is a bit off, causing the back to be loaded more than the legs. The more reps you do or the heavier weight you lift, the more you will notice little nuances in technique. Make sure you are hinging at the right time and allowing the hips to lead the movement, not the arm. Good luck!

I've always done the 'hard-style' as at the time of starting, that was the only option available. I always thought you were meant to get it to around chest height, with straight arms? It's a lot more taxing that way. Great exercise in any variation.

The hardstyle swing shown here is referred to as the “gunslinger swing” where you keep your elbows closer to your body and have a bend to your elbows during the upswing, this type of swing is great for learning to clean the kettlebell, but of itself as a regular swing works great too As far as how high the kettlebell should go on the upswing: The idea is to always allow the force applied by the hips to dictate how high the kettlebell goes. For a beginners this might be about waist height for someone more experienced it’ll be about shoulder width or a little lower. But it all depends really.

Hi, I did hardstyle swings for a 4-5 months completing 40,000 reps in total. That fatigued my knee completely and my knee would click while climbing stairs. However now after taking a couple of years of break, I am back to it with more of a endurance style swing demonstrated by Brittany.. you can see the huge difference of the swings on the knee here. @paulweiss2203

@@rachaelisobelclaeys6980 I found a swing type called the American Swing. In the video they do the Russian Swing. American Swing allows the weight to go overhead. Be aware there are several things about the American Swing you must pay attention to: 1. It's an advanced exercise. 2. The weight goes overhead so be aware of your grip and do not let your elbow bend. Both could cause contact between Kettlebell and your head. 3. The momentum at the top could cause you to lose balance backward. 4. Your shoulders need to be held properly and in good enough shape or you could suffer injury. Ramping up to the American Swing do the Sport Kettlebell Russian Swing and Kettlebell Snatches to be in shape for it.

"It depends"? Really? If your goal is to compete in Girevoy Sport (99.9% of people won't even know what that is) then the sport swing is for you. If you're doing kettlebells for ANY normal fitness result like fat loss, muscle gain, strength training, etc. then the hard style swing is the only way to go. Not telling people this is wrong. The sports swing doesn't extend the hips or knees meaning you never develop the glutes or quads properly. Basically for 99.9% of people the sports swing is a complete waste of time.

If all you want is to feel more tired when using a light kettlebell, then hardstyle is great. Afterward you can grab a smoothie and granola. If you actually want to get stronger, improve athletic performance, and be able to use a heavier bell or do more reps, then learn from top competitors.
