My current recommendation for wonderful quality beginner steel burr grinder is the Timemore C2: amzn.to/3USXizt , amzn.to/48oyGBT
The Hario Skerton and InstaCuppa coffee grinders are some of the easily available entry level grinders in India. I have been using these two grinders for a while now and when somone asked me how to set the grind size on these grinders I thought about this comparision video. I've given my personal recommendations for grind size, your choice may vary. I have also shown how to assemble these grinders. I did make a video about how to clean a manual coffee grinder, I'll leave the link below if you'd like to watch. The InstaCuppa grinder design is actually very familiar and many other grinders are similar to this. If you have any questions or suggestions I'll see you in the comments section! Thanks for watching!
.
Thanks to Mandala Cafe for lending me the Hario Skerton, much appreciate it!

Great video. I bought the insta cuppa grinder recently but it seems to take a really long time to grind and even after 5-10 mins some beans are left in it. I am grinding for aeropress. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any suggestion is appreciated.
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 3 года назад
I used this grinder only for pourovers and it still used to take 5 to 6 min for a 20g dose so I can imagine it will take longer for aeropress. Unfortunately I guess that's the limit of the instacuppa grinder. If you're open to experimentation I've seen people do great with coarser grinds on aeropress, you can try that to reduce grinding time

Your beans are moist. Probably because they aren't fresh roast or if you take too long to finish a batch or you live in a high humidity area

I purchased the InstaCuppa electric coffee grinder last year and it worked fine, just adjust once, fill, switch on and let it do it's thing. But recently the entire mechanism has shifted (?) so the space between the two parts of the burr grinder just don't reduce no matter how much I screw to adjust. No help from InstaCuppa since it's past its warranty. Wondering if getting a manual one would be better. Any suggestions?

That's a bummer. I've never had an electric grinder, but if you're mainly brewing espresso or brewing multiple cups a day, I guess electric makes sense. I'm mostly brewing pour over and rarely espresso so hand grinder makes more sense to me. In general hand grinders have better burrs and quality for similar prices since they don't have motors etc. Hope that helps?

Can the insta cuppa grinder do espresso or turkish coffee?
@DistilledStills

Technically it can do espresso but I wouldn't recommend it. Adjustments are very less. Definitely not for Turkish coffee.

I have aeropress thinking of buying instacuppa. is this recommended?
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills Год назад
Hi Vipin, thanks for your question. Aeropress is a very forgiving brewer and does not need great precision so I believe you can work with this grinder. However if you can find a steel burr grinder I'd greatly recommend that over a ceramic burr one like the instacuppa one.

@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills Год назад
No worries, I used this grinder for about two years, and if this is your first grinder go for it. I would recommend something like a Timemore C2 for an upgrade when you can. Or you can get your coffee ground in small quantities from a local cafe for the time being.

hi, which grinder would you suggest for south indian filter coffee? im not a everyday drinker, like 2-3 times a week
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 2 года назад
Hi Priyanshi thanks for your comment. In my experience South Indian filter coffee is pretty fine grind size, however not espresso fine so either grinder available in the market is able to produce those for you. In my experience using hario, instacuppa, timemore and JX pro I could brew South Indian filter with all of them. The ceramic burrs tend be slower and takes a little more effort. Since you're not a frequent brewer I would suggest going for a ceramic burr grinder, either of the hario models will work for you.

@@DistilledStills they are only grinders noe? what are your views on morphy richards coffee maker?
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 2 года назад
Yes these are just grinders. I have zero experience with home espresso machines or home coffee machines in general. Morphy Richards seems to have a few machines as well but I've never used either so unfortunately I'm not the best person to help there.

Using instacuppa one for 3 months now. My impression is for pour over and moka pot it works satisfactorily in the finer to medium size but for french press I am not at all satisfied with the consistency in grind size. Been thinking about upgrading to hario mini slim plus. Would that be a significant improvement ?
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 3 года назад
Completely agree with you regarding the instacuppa. Unfortunately I have personally not used the Hario mini slim plus. The smart G looks great though. However if you're looking to spend near 5k the timemore c2 is a better option in my opinion

@@cloakshadow4486 I used to be able to find the C2 on websites of roasters like Savorworks, however of late all of them seem to be out of stock so I have ordered from a guy called Vansh Anand, you can look him up on IG. He imports timemore products

Thank god .. I found a side by side comparison ... By the way bro .. which hand grinder did you like out of them.
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 3 года назад
Glad it was helpful. These grinders were pretty much comparable. I used the Hario for a couple of weeks and then went back to instacuppa. Hario had advantage only in size and ease of grinding because of size . Materials are also better. Price though is much more. I think if you can spring for the newer hario Skerton pro its way better than the original

I don't feel the clicks on my instacuppa. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 4 года назад
Hi Uday, on Instacuppa grinder it doesn't have clicks in the truest sense but the divisions are definitely distinguishable. They may become less so after about 10 clicks when the burrs become far enough apart. If it's not very well felt I suggest to use relative position of the adjustment screw to help guide your grind size. Hope that helps 👍

Don't think I can afford the Hario, but the instacuppa seems pretty valuable for the price. Not sure how durable it is, or how long is it gonna last on a day to day basis, like if I use it once every day. Is it good enough to last a few months to a year? Would really appreciate your insight on this.
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 3 года назад
It'll easily last a year, mine is still working , I just gave it to my dad. He doesn't drink coffee as much as me and I really needed faster grinder and better quality grind. There's many grinders very similar to instacuppa too

@@DistilledStills What do you think about this one? www.amazon.in/dp/B086LF8FXT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_fabc_CVY2GR3WP1MW89W810Y8 It has a new design, but the same internals as the burr grinders in this price range, it's also a bit cheaper but I'm probably gonna lean towards the instacuppa. I'm eventually gonna get the chestnut c2 in a few months since I'm saving for it rn. It'll be a huge upgrade in so many ways. Gonna be using the cheaper options till then, I guess
@DistilledStills
@DistilledStills 3 года назад
@@shubhamsinghstar123 I'm not completely sure about this, the crank arm and adjustments don't look that great. If you're buying for a short period then I would suggest something like the 3d creations grinder its a generic design and almost indistinguishable from instacuppa
