'Hark What Music' (Anon-Warmington Collection) sung by St Ives Combined Chapels Cornish Carol Choir (MD William Thomas) at Tate Gallery St. Ives Winter Festival 27th November 2022
St Ives Combined Chapels' Cornish Carol Choir have been performing unique local Christmas carols at Tate St Ives since it opened in 1993. Written by Cornish musicians in the 1800's these wonderful carols have been sung in underground mines across the world. Formed each year from the different church choirs in St Ives, this choir celebrates the story behind ‘Christmas’ through an authentic and harmonious presentation of Cornish music.
MD William Thomas noted: For many years St.Ives has resounded to the singing of Carols (Curls), written by Cornish musicians, including Thomas Broad, Joseph Tanner, Thomas Merrit, and Colan (Cully) Willliams. Each Chapel had its own Carol Choir and for two weeks before and after Christmas Day they would sing around the streets and stately homes in the St.Ives and Carbis Bay area. Sadly the introduction of double glazing, has meant that choirs are no longer audible above the sound of TVs and stereos. Despite this the Chapel choirs from Fore Street and Bible Christian still continue to keep these unique carols alive and many locals gather to listen wherever they meet to sing them.
