Welcome to Part 2 of the Harley Dyna Disaster! Check out the first video if you haven't already to get the full scope of the situation. Quick synopsis: I destroyed my stock clutch trying to learn wheelies on the 2013 Club Style Harley Dyna Street Bob. As a result, I decided to upgrade to a heavy duty Barnett Clutch with stiffer spring and extra kevlar plates. While torquing the screws to 100 ft lbs I unsurprisingly snapped five of the six screws. I realized after the fact that I was supposed to be torquing to 100 inch lbs! Learn from my mistake and don't do what I did! The big concern now was how to get the busted screws extracted from the clutch hub. I went to harbor freight and picked up reverse drill bits and a screw extraction kit. Check out the video to see what happened!

LOL - I did the EXACT SAME THING on a Honda Trike - used a torque wrench 18 in lbs vs 18 ft lb - was good for a few minutes then one of the heads shot off like a bullet! I blame myself, society AND the manual - should call out in RED (INCH LBS) esp on common repairs like the clutch. LUCKILY for me... I was able to unscrew 3 out of 4 screws remove the plates and vice grip off the broken bolt.

That kind of stuff can happen to the best of us. Why don't you have a lift or something to help when working on all these bikes? I would think being cramped into a small spot hunched over probably rushes your work and makes it difficult. Great videos

Hey Jon, I'm glad in the end it wasn't too bad! Does the clutch feel much stiffer than before? I did mine on a Sportster (also replaced the stock clutch with an extra kevlar plates Barnett kit and a stiffer spring), it feels way stiffer now to the point where it even feels unreasonable, especially riding around town.

This video and a first part video is probably why I'll never buy a Harley. The quality is questionable, to say at least. This shows that in reality you end up paying 60% for the Harley name and 40% for actual motorcycle. Raider is my choice and later I'll probably also get a Boulevard, or a M109R as it's called now.
@JonsMotoGarage
@JonsMotoGarage 5 лет назад
To be fair, the original clutch made it a solid 23k miles until the bike came into my possession and I started trying to learn wheelies on it. Lol. But dollar for dollar, I have to agree you get more bang for your buck with the metric cruisers. At least in the used market where I'm always buying.

@@JonsMotoGarage Dude, those bykes are so much more expensive in Europe. My Raider XV1900 scl custom dark grey 2016 5000 miles cost me around $15,000 and for the M109R I'm negotiating for now which is a 2008 and has 15000 miles on it, dude asks $9,000. If we figured out a way to export bykes from US to Europe we could make some serious bucks.

Your first mistake fella Is calling a Machine bolt a "screw"
@JonsMotoGarage
@JonsMotoGarage 4 года назад
I'm certainly no expert regarding shop vocab, but here's what google says: The defining distinction, per Machinery's Handbook, is in their intended purpose: Bolts are for the assembly of two unthreaded components, with the aid of a nut. Screws in contrast are used in components which contain their own thread, and the screw may even cut its own internal thread into them.

@@JonsMotoGarage Yeah, it was a combo of things. Pero the biggest thing was that I was leaving some slack/freeplay in the lever. Because on the OEM lever it needs like 1/16th of play. But I guess on this one it has to be firm with no freeplay since it has a different mechanism. Does yours feel tight? That heavy duty spring doesnt help either
