What I went through here in NC the first summer in 2019, Was that it made my motor hotter. I was in a lot of traffic and did not know why the motor was not running well when stopped so I gave it more gas each time I had to slow or stop. I learned that this system did not function well in an attempt cool the motor. This is when I found you guy and your mods. Can not understand why Harley is not knocking down your door to put this on all new models. IT WORKS. again guys great job.

Good to read that you are liking the videos and have found them and some of our parts useful. We appreciate your comment and your business. 👍 Harley sometimes moves glacially slow. However, they have over the last 3-4 years made changes to their factory bikes to mimic some mods we introduced well over 12 years ago.

My EITMS (2018 M8 Softail) used to activate quite often especially after longer rides then returning home and having to stop at several lights along the way. I installed the Jims Forceflow couple weeks ago and so far the EITMS has not activated once. I am using the 140 degree thermostat option on the fan and it works like a charm....so far. Thanks for all you guys do!!

Pretty sure it does slow down the heat climb while sitting still...but it is a Band-Aid, which is better than nothing, but does not really fix the real issue of these things getting so hot in warm weather.

08 FLHTCU, first generation EITMS. It is completely manual rolling the throttle forward and hold it for a few seconds will kick it on. Roll the throttle forward and hold it for a few seconds or get the bike moving again and EITMS toggles off. Installed an oil cooler and an oil temp gauge instead of the air temp gauge. Got ride of the stock exhaust and intake to help it breath easier. Installed external breather oil catch can. Retuned with the SE tuner and all in all, works okay.

In 1989 I found an oil fortifier in sportsman show in Portland. I loved it in my Chevy truck, so I added it too my H-D Sporty, then my 03' Dyna. It gave me better mileage an cooler running. Now I change out my 20w-50 oil towards end of riding season because bike won't reach normal operating temperatures! I'll tell you about product if your interested!

Further food for thought maybe: As you mentioned the heat sensor is on the front cylinder aft left side. Since it's the rear cylinder who cuts out and it still has full 4 stroke cycle with COMPRESION STROKE but no fuel & ignition, I believe the front cylinder has to do more work to keep the engine running at idle. I 'd like to have an overall picture with both cylinders' temperatures and oil, even maybe coolant temperatures on dual cooled engines. I understand you have both types. Please note that I'm not HD owner, just a fan, and "would be" in future.

EITMS will cause the rear cylinder head and exhaust pipe to start cooling due to cutout, but metallurgy properties deem it impossible to see a fast temperature drop like was being looked for in the test ride. Also, the temp sensor being on the front of the rear cylinder (not the back) skews the result due to it’s proximity to the active front cylinder. To really measure and actually see what’s happening temperature wise would require an infared camera and/or a lot more temperature sensors.

Yes, this first video we did on the EITMS did not show what the EITMS does for heat radiation...it does show that it provides no significant engine cooling, as stated in the Harley manual....even though many dealerships and Harley owners say it does. Here is our follow up video where we did measure a nice drop in temps radiating out from the rear headpipe. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5OTSwYFPABE.html

I got the 1,000 mile service done at Harley and installed exhaust/ flashed tune right after. Now my EITMS doesn't stay on. I have to manually turn it on at every stop. Any thoughts on why? Harley overfilled my oil and the bike rides wanting to lean to one side now. So obviously the Harley guy servicing my bike wasn't very experienced. So it could be something he did that's causing it to kick off every few seconds.

On a 14 SGS with CVO 110 build, revolution crank, big oil pan, etc… I run love jugs and DK catch can. When bike was 103, without love jugs, it would heat up to 400+ during stops in heavy traffic. After build, and mods, never been above 315. My temperatures are observed via FP3. I don’t believe EITMS does anything to help cool the motor on my bike, it does shake the shit out of the motor mounts. That said, there are still times I activate it… just in case it actually helps. EITMS is probably one more of those beta test designs that the MoCo tries out on its customers.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 года назад
Oh my goodness. 400 F ET is crazy hot, 315F is not as bad, but still pretty bad. All those mods you've made (plus that it is a 110) are being neutralized by that heat. Here is a video showing what happens when a Twin Cam gets around 270-280 or higher. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MF0hO-w2hz8.html Yeah, I do not like how much it shakes, nor the sound, nor can I believe that only the front cylinder firing is good for all the internals. EITMS does slow down how fast the rear cylinder heats up at a stop, and it does provide some small amount of FELT heat reduction for the rider and passenger.

@@DKCustomProducts I built motor at 55k miles. We travel often, pulling a Bushtec trailer. About 16/1700 lbs of bike, trailer, cargo and people…. The bike works hard. Once in traffic jamb in Tulsa, bike got so hot… I told nana to just step off, if it caught fire. The bike was down on power and needed some TLC. During rebuild, I observed that the tops of pistons and combustion chambers were heavily coated in oil carbon. Intake valves were clean backsides (I use seafoam regularly). Anyhow, I now use your catch can setup. I also noted the rear cylinder was damn near polished like a mirror, no doubt due to the often excessive heat. I’ll keep doing what I do for now, hopefully by the time the chassis has 100k the motor will still be going strong. If not, I will tear her down again and compare the oil and temperature management I employed with this build. I recently bought a used 21 Fat Boy. Still less than 600 miles, at 1000 mile service, plan to see just how much oil is pumped through the throttle body. I’ll probably see another DK catch can in the near future. Cheers!

EITMS will turn off the rear cylinder fuel injector when all of the following preset parameters are met: Throttle position is at idle Motorcycle speed is under 1.2 mph (2 km/h) Engine speed is under 1200 RPM Engine Temperature (ET) sensor input reading is above preset level Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) sensor reading is above preset level (radio equipped models only) It does not sound like you have any need to go to the dealer. Your ambient temp of 75-80f, along with your ET temp is what is activating the EITMS.

Is better for the engine to disable the EIMTS since you indicate it is not having an effect in cooling? Is there some advantage in fuel savings to have it enabled?
@DKCustomProducts

I believe it will slow down the heating up of the rear cylinder when stopped. So if one does not have other cooling components in place, keeping this activated will provide some benefit. If you spend a lot of time idling, it certainly should save fuel.

Interesting test, I'm going to verify that mine is active as I've never noticed it coming on and my ET reading is almost always above 300 in 90+ temp highway solo riding even with every cooling gadget know to man on it including dyno tuned (17 freewheeler) . BUT MY REAL QUESTION IS, I'm a bit confused by the statement made that the "PV ET was sensing the front of the rear cylinder"??. If so were is the PV head temp sensor? My head temp readings seem to act more like it is monitoring the cylinder as it quickly falls 5 degrees or so when deceling or giving it a lot more throttle (fuel). The ET reading has a much more gradual change . Head temp also reads about 30 degrees hotter than the ET which kind of makes sense. Did I misunderstand? Thanks again for all the great info and parts you provide.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 года назад
Man, that is too hot. Here is a list of things that we do to our bikes and it should get you down around 260* on a hot day, running hard. www.dkcustomproducts.com/why-how-to-cool-down-the-twin-cam-engine-part-i-dk-cl-tc-dn-1.htm Here is a video series on the subject also- ru-vid.com/group/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C The Power Vision wording is a bit confusing from Dynojet. ET as displayed on the Power Vision is a direct read out of the cylinder head temp sensor. On the Twin Cams that sensor is located at the rear of the front cylinder. On the M8's it is located at the front of the rear cylinder. Head Temp (HeadT) as displayed on the Power Vision is a Calculated number, It is NOT a direct reading of the temp sensor in the cylinder head. It makes no sense, but that is the way they do it. ET is the actual head temperature and HeadT is a number that is derived from an algorithm, that includes many sensor readings...that is why you can see it change quickly and significantly sometimes. Thank you for your comment, and we appreciate your business. 👍🏻

Thanks for the clarification on the head temp reading because it seems like mine runs on average about 10 degrees hotter than the engine temp readings. Myy 2017 Tri Glide runs on average around 285 to 295 on a 100 degree day and hovers between 275 and 280 on days below 90 degrees, and in the cold days it can still get up to the 270's on the engine temp. My cooling mods are Love Jugs Mighty Mite fans, Jagg oil cooler and remote filter from Dk, tank lift, removed left side heat deflector, and I have the tank wings to direct more air to the cylinders. I'm about 15 to 20 degrees hotter than I want to be and open for any further recommendations. I like to go fast ( 80 to 85 mph on the highway) but need to keep it closer to 70 in order to keep my temps in check. Mine does cool down quite a bit at idle tho and will reach target temp after a few minutes of slow riding or idling. But yeah, if I'm on the freeway doing 75 then Crack the throttle to pass someone or whatever I will see the head temp climb fast and was wondering why
@rschaerer98
@rschaerer98 2 года назад
@@daviddavis8653 I've done all the very same things. I do have a 22x cam, heavy breather and open pipes which should all help a bit too. You've got a bit more weight but I'm thinking that the air vents on the tri-glide help direct more air to the engine better plus you've got a water cooler too (I think) which keeps your cylinders cooler than mine (oil cooled only). A strong tail wind is a real killer for me. Good new is my oil stays well below 230 and I never have any problems just sitting in traffic. Ride safe bro...
@daviddavis8653
@daviddavis8653 2 года назад
Actually the oil cooled heads run cooler that the liquid cooled models, if I could convert mine to oil cooled I would... that's one inherent problem with the touring models. I am planning on getting the Wood 22 cam as well since I did find out thru DK that the stock cams in the M8 also cause the engine to run hot, and the catalytic converter also has to be adding heat... Definitely adds felt heat. I also have Dk's 606 air filter setup which the stock cover hides quite well and running an external breather. But going to switch to a catch can soon because the breather can burp up just enough oil to make a mess on cold days. I have learned a lot from the guys at DK and I'm glad I found their channel because I thought mine was ok with the liquid cooled heads until I started watching their videos. Mine was running at 310F when riding normally on a 90+ degree day so I did drop the engine and oil temp significantly but there's still room for improvement.... Keep safe bro

@@daviddavis8653 Yes, DK has provided a ton of good info. You'll like the 22x on the trike. I really enjoy the more aggressive lope at idle, especially with my CFRs. It will wake up any exhaust. The map from fuel moto ran well and I did a lot of additional tuning with the PV basic auto tune feature. Later when I got it dyno'd it wasn't far off, only gained another 5 lbs torque around 3k rpm. Might want to think about upgrading to the new oil pump while they got things tore down a bit.

@DKCustomProducts 2 года назад
Don't know what year and model bike you have. Don't know if you're saying that the EITMS activates while riding? Yes, there were a few years where an ambient temp of 70 degrees would activate it. Not sure what fan you're talking about. Nor do I understand what noise is drowning out the sound of what fans. There are a few ways to know if a water pump is bad- Leaking If the bike gets too hot there is an idiot light that comes on When the engine is fully warmed up, you can pull the water pump cover and put your hand on the pump and feel if it is running. You can also touch both the in and out hoses to the pump and see if coolant is flowing thru them The Easiest way to know if the water pump works is to turn your ignition on (don't start it) and then twist your throttle to at least 50% and hold it for 3 seconds. This will switch the water pump on. You can see a video on the coolant & pump at this link- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CY4u_zP-4tc.html Feel free to email us or call us with any questions. I have a 2013 FXDBP with a 103 and when the motor gets over 250* it gets seriously rough. But it's not just at idle, it' actually will run like the rear cylinder is dead till I get to 2200 rpm.. Can you tell me how to disable the EITMS on my 2013 FXDBP that does not have cruise? Thanks..

@DKCustomProducts 2 года назад
I'm pretty sure that you activate and deactivate it the same way (rolling the throttle forward and holding) and it is just a different light. Your manual will tell you for sure. If that does not fix the rough running til 2200 RPM (which I doubt it will) , I would look for intake leaks, exhaust leaks, loose spark plug, worn plug wires. I just realized you put in your comment that it is when the engine is over 250* that is when it starts running rough. That is too hot for a Twin Cam. You may find the Report at the following link useful- www.dkcustomproducts.com/why-how-to-cool-down-the-twin-cam-engine-part-i-dk-cl-tc-dn-1.htm In case too much heat damage has already occurred, you can find out for sure by having a leak-down test done. You can see info on that in this video- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2YrM7f321JE.html

@@DKCustomProducts Hey, I think I might have found my problem but have yet to take the bike for a ride.. I have a Power Vision and in the drop down Environment menu I clicked EITMS Mode 3 enable temp and found the setting was 120*c/248*F so I changed it to 160*C. @@DKCustomProducts I thought I would update you guys on how my engines running.. I did go back to a Dyno tune that I had a local shop due for me. I thought with the power vision I could fine tune my Dyno tune but it just made things worse.. It made my temperatures rise even more because I only have narrow band and it was causing the time to go too lean. I was out the other day and it actually went up to 295 with ambient temps of only 70*.. So what I did was I reloaded the dyno tune that I had paid for and the max temperature I got up to was 261* but that was City type driving out on the road it's running 235* to 240* so I can't complain about that.. I think I'm just going to stop trying to make this better and just accept the fact that I know a Dyno tune is the best way to go.. thanks for all your responses.. Much appreciated..

I see D&K have realized they missed it here, but I'll go ahead and post this "I like the guys at DK Customs, but I think they are kind a missing the boat with this demonstration test of the EIMTS.. They should ran the engine at idle to watch engine temp increase after then disabling the EIMTS.. Because the Engine temp doesn't decrease, does the EIMTS have an positive effect (reduce the rate of increase) on the rate of engine temp increase at idle?? A separate measurement test should be conducted on the Front and Rear Cylinder Head Pipes (comparison)..

Thanks for the comment and suggestions... next week we will be posting a follow up video on EITMS testing, and we had the same idea you did. See if the EITMS slows down the rising cylinder head temps. See if turning off the EITMS will raise the cylinder head temp. We also measured the heat coming off the rear head pipe. (that is the "secret sauce" of the EITMS).
@ut1004bp
@ut1004bp 2 года назад
@@DKCustomProducts You would notice the greatest difference in heat change on the head pipes I'm sure. I'm also wondering if only the spark or if the spark and fuel is cut off during the EIMTS operation. If the fuel isn't also cut off, they designed it for the fuel to help cool the internal, but that's bad for crank oil contamination.. Now that I have installed a fan on my oil cooler, I believe I'm shutting off my EIMTS..but I want to have a way to monitor temps.. and not sure if the Boom2 on a 2021 SG standard has a temp display option.

Come on Kevin that was not a fair test. EITMS, technically even in your case kept the engine at 244° and bounced to 246 which is 2° warmer Sitting for one minute with 94° weather. You might be able to say it was just maintaining the temperature and not really getting any warmer. (I know 2°) On the second test, I thought for sure you would do a temperature test with the EITMS deactivated. Mirroring the conditions of the first test, and show us The increase (if any) the temperature would rise for that one minute. I did a test a few times. I sat at a stoplight in 104° weather for one minute and 40 seconds with the EITMS system activated and my temperature actually went down 7°. Btw I am no rocket scientist. And you’re probably dealing with someone who is not playing with a full deck. (Me) Anyway I enjoy your guys‘ videos and your products, keep up the good work!

You can see the results at this video- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5OTSwYFPABE.html Every bike is different, and will respond a bit differently. The one thing we did do is that the temp will almost always drop a little as one slows down from riding to a stop. More so if it has been riding at interstate speeds. This temp drop will happen, with or without the EITMS activated.

Could two different groups of engineers be wrong? Absolutely. History is full of examples of that. Do I think they were wrong in this instance? NO. It seems apparent that disabling the rear cylinder will slow down the heat generated when sitting still...AND there may be more going on than the temp of the rear cylinder head, which is all that we measured in this test. We will be doing another test.

Harley has changed the parameters so many times on what activated the EITMS that we definitely have not kept up with that. Also, even in their bulletins and manuals, they are very unclear as to what temps (ET & Ambient) trigger it. Also, even in the same model year, it can vary model to model. WHAT IS TRUE about what you state is what is the EITMS supposed to accomplish, and HOW does it accomplish it. That is why we did this test. ALSO, it is why we are doing another test soon...because we learned some things from this test. Thank you for your comment! 👍

@@DKCustomProducts yep,activation & deactivation is different between TBW & cable bikes. Also,between touring/softail,etc. EITMS actually works in 2 stages. The 270* you were looking at,doesn't disable the rear cylinder. 270*,or,whatever temp is set within the tune,starts the 1st stage,which is,richening the mixture to try to slow down heat build up. If it reaches the temp set to activate Stage 2,which can be set at a lil over 300*,then,idle speed is lowered & the rear cylinder is deactivated.

@@jayfeatherstone5959 Interesting. The numbers you put in are almost assuredly true for some models in some years. However, they are not accurate for all models and all years, as evidenced by the temps shown in this video.
