Let me say that you’re a life saver. When I got to the part of taking out the 2 Phillips screws I was cussing like a sailor but when you said they are also 9mm bolts and I confirmed it my soul came back to my body. Thank you so much brother.

Mine has been making that sound so I expected the same results but the difference is that my starter is a new larger starter because it was needed when I went from an 80" to a 111" engine. Upon inspection some of the teeth had broken off of the starter ring. I am going to to the high torque clutch basket and starter gear. Less teeth but are more beefy and will spin engine a bit slower. It's worth taking off the primary cover from time to time to inspect whats in there. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Got it done! Thanks, BTW, 9mm deep socket was impossible to find around here. All the sets had 10mm as the littlest. I found that 11/32" was the same size. And yes, that damn thing tried to *spring* apart on me. Thanks again.

When you took all the parts out of the starter, what did you see that would cause to make that noise?
@L2fish

Wonder if this is whats wrong with my 08 fat boy, starts fine cold but when hot clunks and grinds. I have learned to bump the starter to ensure its engaged before holding the button down

Any idea where I could find a back half motor cover? (chrome) I bought a used starter but that back has a stress crack in it. Thanks
@rednecktech82
@rednecktech82 5 лет назад
my best guess would be Ebay...don't know that just the back of case is sold seperate anywhere. Maybe find a broken "for parts" starter that is chrome.

If you buy a starter from a 1997-2003 Lexus RX 300 and similar , from exactly the same as a Harley starter! But cheaper!

I would just go to your local supply store and see what electric motor grease they have in stock. Tell them what you're working on and they should be able to stear you right. Mobil has a nice grease available...You'll want something for electric motor bearings.

Hey man I put this starter in my 09 and realized it had a ball bearing already in it when I went to start it and it had a high pitched noise. I took it out and put it back in and now I’m just getting a click and it won’t even turn over. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
@rednecktech82
@rednecktech82 4 года назад
I had issues with intermittent start wouldn't fire 1st round but would fire on 2nd go sometimes would fire right up other times would click click click, all of that was just due to needing to take sandpaper to the battery cables and I also hit the terminals now she fires up like new. over time a layer of funk get's on the cables and it doesn't get a strong connection.
@benlacroix5717
@benlacroix5717 4 года назад
I bought a brand new battery all cables are clean, it’s something to do with the clutch itself, I’m wondering if I got a dud? The round bearing in the middle wasn’t able to move very easily and felt stiff, did you add the old ball bearing to the new clutch? Or did you realize that the little ball was already in the bottom of the clutch in the yellow grease?
@benlacroix5717
@benlacroix5717 4 года назад
I’m also wondering if maybe my whole starting assembly isn’t strong enough to support the all balls clutch?
@rednecktech82
@rednecktech82 4 года назад
@@benlacroix5717 could be dud, i reused mine with no issues.
@chrissoroberts3532

If your just getting the dreaded click click and no starter engagement you got a bad solenoid most likely...get a solenoid rebuild kit around $20 or better still the manual solenoid with the starter button on it.. look it up, good luck with it mate..

@@rednecktech82 I was mostly concerned about quality for 20 or 40 bucks vs 80 to 100 bucks I guess you get what you pay for. 😉
@rednecktech82
@rednecktech82 3 года назад
It was $20 or $40 for the components to rebuild not for a whole new starter. I have 20,000 more miles on the bike since I did this and it's still going strong.
