1:35 Reminds me of the John Mulaney line "I don't know what my body is for, other than taking my head from room to room."
@khyrianstorms
@khyrianstorms 4 года назад
Well, actually, there is a metaphor to be found in being an account, exec, or director. The head might be strategic, but if the body can't do the actual action work, we're screwed. The mind can go on limitless, but the body has limits. If you don't push those boundaries, your mind has a very limited timeframe to work with. Second: we forget our nervous system. It's a complex system that turns tactile impulses into data that our mind then turns into a strategy to deal with that. Our mind feeds on that valuable data.

A couple quotes from Christopher Hitchens: "When asked if free will exists, I say, 'Of course, we have no choice.' But unlike the religious, at least I know I'm being ironic. The people who say 'Free will... it's a RULE you've got to have free will' don't even know they're being literal"

Pete is absolutely right. It is pleasent to be angry. In German they say a choleric person is "streitsüchtig" which means addicted to arguments.

1:36 Alan Watts said this to portray the prevailing perspective of modern man, not as its own piece of wisdom. If anything, he disagreed with this perspective and would probably say that the contrast between consciousness and body is as imaginary as the contrast between a book and the pages which make it up.

@yomama5368
@yomama5368 2 года назад
@@ldskjfhslkjdhflkjdhf I agree that Watts isn't an "intellectual" in I suppose the... classical use of the term? He often called himself a "spiritual entertainer," so he himself would probably agree he shouldn't be taken all too seriously, but he provides some interesting 101 on eastern philosophy in a calm and charming way. It'd be one thing if what Watts was putting out there was seriously damaging to society but overall the dude seems to have just sorta vibed out with some hippies. I think there's a difference between something like this and something like Greenblatt's _Towards a Poetics of Culture_ or some such "serious" academic work, but both have value in engaging their respective audiences.

Humans have invented notions of pluralism thus we are culpable to the irreducible human trait of recalcitrance in the id. Tarkovsky ascribes the human condition, that is to receive, as in atrophy. *Tarkovsky despite being bogged down by the consensus oriented compound polity ruining his livelihood. I think Tarkovsky was in the right about the fact that all autochthones are capable of autocephaly or at least that expression. That autocephaly does not have to subscribe to the tenets of moral rearmament. It can be be a burden as it was with Rainer Fassbinder a long suffering artist or it could be on the nature of being alive like Andre Gregory. To paraphrase Todd,... 'Any of these people could be God."
